John's big thread of site news, fixes, updates, and more! Something broken? Report it here.

I have not been able to log in through Tapatalk all day today. I can log in fine through the website, though. I think Tapatalk updated on Android yesterday ... so don't know if that is the reason. Anyone else having issues? I just keep getting invalid username/password when trying to log in. My username and password work just fine on the website.

Not sure if this is the right place to report this, but the RSS feed for the Video Game Deals Forum is broken. Live bookmark feed fails to load. The others seem to work fine. When I go to the page it gets this error.

error on line 188 at column 72: PCDATA invalid Char value 16

Is there a way to know the last IP's you are logged in as? Would be helpful to know if someone else has logged in as me.

What you got to do to be able to add blog entries? The add entry button doesn't seem to be functioning. Not sure about the "blog this" button, since I don't want to blog this. Is it just disabled? edit - my mind was disabled.

Hello, all,

Off the top, I'd like to say thanks for all you do, both site-runners and contributors.  It's been very helpful, interesting, and a pleasure coming here over my relatively short time.

My question/concern is the search bar.  For some reason, it never seems to find all the results that it should -- or any at all.  I'll put a word in just to test, knowing that it should pull up a post from today, for example, and I'll only get stuff from 2015 and back, if that.

I was on AWD a few days ago, and I swear I saw a post that someone put up where they mentioned some deal, and they said something to the effect of using page monitor to track, but "in a pinch" or "if you're in a hurry" you can always use "forklift".

Now, maybe it was in another forum, but I don't think so because I don't really look at that many on here.  I sort of have my go-to ones, or I'll check out a particular deal post.

I put "forklift" in quick search up there, and it mostly returned posts about a forklift simulator and/or shenmue (both of which sure seem divisive around here!  lol)  I tried searching a particular forum and even just forums in general.

The only hit I got regarding the site "forklift" was someone asking if there was an alternative to page monitor.

Also, in the help page for searching, it mentions advanced search.  Can you only get there once you do a quick search?  Otherwise, I never seem to see a button/link for it.  Regardless, when I click on advanced search, it merely opens the quick search results as a page (i.e., the results don't disappear when I move the mouse to some other part of the page).  I don't have any search options for a particular word or date or any of that.

I use firefox and chrome, and I've done this over maybe three different computers.

Sorry for the long post.  If anyone can help with the search mechanic or if anyone knows the specific forklift post I saw in the last few days, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks for before, today, and tomorrow.  You folks are awesome.

http://theforklift.net/ is the website people are referring to.
Thanks, HyperG. I appreciate the "lift" on this one.

Part of my long-winded question up there was wondering why I can't seem to search for and/or get search results that include "forklift" in that context. I'll get some returns, but not all of them apparently.

Or, heck, really most anything I'm typing in doesn't show. Your post...that I'm looking at right now -- and subsequently, this reply -- that we both know contain the word "forklift" (could be any word), for example, won't show up in the results for me.

Do you happen to have any theories on that? Thanks again for replying.

Sorry for the frivolous posts, but it says that I "don't have permission" to edit my own post?!  Weird.

However, that leads me to say this:  it also says "no permission" up there near the search bar when I'm trying to search.

It did actually show my post containing "forklift" along with the replies that did also.  But when I was going to check and see what results it would yield outside of this forum/thread, it started fouling up.

I'm not sure what's happening or what I'm doing wrong.

I appreciate the help.

Should've did this before I guess -- pictures worth a thousand words and all that.  I put "forklift" in the search, and chose "forums", and even though we have four mentions in this particular thread, it isn't included in the results...nor are any of the others I've ran across trying to use Google to help search this website.  It just gives me these two:

[attachment=21521:search.jpg]

Anywho...maybe dumb Google is part of the problem.  I had to move to Firefox just to write this up because for some reason I kept getting immediately logged out of CAG.

I guess I've exceeded the maximum idiotic, harassment posts for the hour.  :)

Was it the last AWD thread, AWD XV?

Search (bar) has been a problem for a while. Here's the actual Advanced Search page that should yield more extensive results. It's what I used to find the results in AWD XV, among other threads.

Hey, Phantom, I appreciate the reply and search tip.

To your question, *wracking brain* ahhhh...it could have been XV. I know I went there trying to learn more about what you folks mean by "dinger", but I've also been looking at this current one (XVI), too.

It seems like within a recent deal discussion, someone said something along the lines of use page monitor to do this or that, but if you're in a hurry you can just use "theforklift" -- which was a hyperlink. That was the first time that I had been to that site. But oddly, it's nowhere in my history before I asked my question on this thread. Weird.

Ah, well. Craziness. Thanks again for the reply and search link.

Still don't know if this is where you saw it, but it's most likely in the AWD XVI OP under the "F.A.Q's" spoiler, then "Any tips on finding deals?" spoiler. If not, then maybe this or maybe the subsequent AWD XV OP revision. This is the first instance I saw it in AWD XV. I also found mentions of it in a post that was deleted.

Again, because the search's limitations, it seems search can't find strings of consecutive text contained within searchable terms. In order to find a term, one must search for the entire searchable term. A search for "fork" or "lift" will never produce results for "forklift." My previous search for "forklift" didn't yield any "theforklift" results. The actual entire searchable term is what you have to search for, which in this instance is, of course, "theforklift." Since most, if not all, mentions of "theforklift" are a URL/link, it appears punctuation may break up strings of text into searchable terms.

Phantom, I'm still at a loss in finding what I "thought" that I had seen before. Part of me wanted to find that particular..."phantom" post, if you will -- and pardon the pun in this case :) -- but while doing so, I think it became more about trying to learn why search never seemed to work as I expected it to. Search may still have issues, but the link to the search form you gave me worked miles better.

By my reckoning, you've went above and beyond with your time, thoroughness, and dedicated research for me (and any others that pass this way). So, again, many thanks. You didn't have to do any of it, but I appreciate that you did.

Take care!

Really, it's no problem. I'm also doing it for my own curiosity and hopefully to help improve the search function when John gets around to it.

I use the search a bit and was somewhat surprised that a search for "forklift" didn't yield "theforklift" results. Also, previously when I searched for "fork" and "lift" while in this thread, I didn't get any "forklift" results. Now it seems to kinda work. It's only finding a few of the posts though, so I still don't know what's going on. Still doesn't seem to find them in the AWD threads.

Hey John, the wiki threads (a fair amount of them) in the gaming deals section have been very slow to edit and save. Sometimes it will timeout all together and it's getting pretty frustrating trying to edit it. This is the thread in particular that I edit regularly that's causing me issues. I can edit the stickied wikis in the Vita section fine as well as the Amiibo thread fine in the gaming deals section, but the rest just take a significant amount of time if they don't timeout. (Most of the other 'long load' ones tested were wiki threads with nothing in the wiki)

I'll also re-mention the other wiki issue as well as a hopefully minor request with wiki threads:

1) Wiki thread links still don't auto-add CAG referrals to the links.

2) If possible, it would be great if wiki threads could get more code allowed before the code stops working and displays as normal text. Such as this thread. Though I doubt there are more than two or three wiki threads that run into this issue.

John, Tapatalk updates don't seem to be working for me at the moment.  I can access the site via Tapatalk and that works OK, though nothing for notifications.    Appears to be this way for at least the last day.  I'm getting emailed updates from CAG and those seem to be working fine, it's just Tapatalk that seems to be the issue.

This is the only site I actively use Tapatalk with, so I can't say if it's happening on other sites besides here.  From the last time this happened, it was an issue on Taptalk's end and something you needed to work out with them to fix.

Normally as soon as there's an issue with Tapatalk, we get a thousand emails from them letting us know that there's an issue.

Anyone else having problems?

I'd like to report something as broken! It was a promise to have a floating nav bar. ;)

Also, I use Tapatalk fanatically and have had no problems.

John, I think logging out of both Tapatalk and the CAG account inside of Taptalk may have fixed the issue for me.  I'll know the next time I get a notification and see if it shows up in both email and Tapatalk.

I'll let you know what happens.

The notification drop down appears to be broken, the box drops down but the circle just spins and spins.. issue started around when the site went down earlier in the week..

IS there anyway to disable the auto closing of a search when the mouse moves 1/16th of an inch to the left or right?

Maybe code it so you have to click outside the middle area to get rid of the search pulldown/window.

This is hell for anyone with a broken scroll mouse because it is impossible to scroll down on a search without losing the window.

In the XBL deals thread, this was happening when I went to edit my post. Two edit boxes came up. It isn't happening in this thread though. Seems suspect. edit - I went back and it didn't happen again, just thought I'd let you know.

Did you accidentally double-click the Edit link? I just did that as a test and it gave me the exact same results you got here.

I might have. The double click does bring up the two editors. Of course both look different (one displays short codes and the other is your visual editor). Might be a feature for all I know.

Hi, it's been a long time since I asked, but is there any update on avatars? I can't link to a file, I can't upload directly, and when I try to upload photos to a user gallery, it tells me there's a server error. Anyone know how to fix this?

You should be able to upload an avatar now.

What's up with the 3-digit number that's appearing below my posts? It's auto-appended when using the WYSIWYG editor, but if I switch to BBcode, I can delete the # and it's not auto-appended.  Any clues? :whee:

Members profile feed doesn't appear to be working.

When I try to post a new message, it just doesn't do anything when I click on the post button.  No page load, not redirects, no nothing.  It's like the button is broken altogether.

Firefox 47.0.1

It appears banned members can still contact people via Tapatalk. I guess there is not much you can do about that. Brandoncummins sent a random group chat message through the app, a lot of spam on the Tapatalk chat in general, I know it can be disabled in the Tapatalk settings by site owner. I don't think it can be disabled entirely. Just thought I mention it.

The Tapatalk chat is weird. A couple random deals, some sporadic messages, and the rest spam or what looks like accidental posts.

Still getting a 3-digit number below any post that I do in preview mode, but I can delete it in raw BB-code ... any help/guidance on how to turn this off? :whistle2:k

When I click on "change" for the filter list on the collection page the drop down menu appears for a split second and then goes to a blank page with only [object Object] on it.  The following is in the URL field:

javascript: jQ('#list_filters').toggle();
