In the case of lost planet, what was put on live was an E3 demo, which isn't very common to give out to the public.
All I know, is in the past games I have worked on, when we had to do demos, we had to stop working on the game for about one month to create and test and polish the demo. Knowing beforehand that we already have a release date to hit makes that frustrating.
So I guess it just comes down to a simple question: is a demo before a release worth losing one month of development, polish, work, adding cool stuff to the final game?
This is also the reason Epic resisted making a GOW demo. They would rather have one more month to make the game that much better.
