Mass Effect 2 Discussion - Fight for the Lost

Yeah, release day shipping is the way to go. You'll pay roughly the same (maybe a hair less) than you would if you went to the store and bought it when you consider tax. Plus, it's there, waiting for you when you get home from work! Other than insane trade-in deals at Gamestop, I'm just going with Amazon from now on.
I have no idea how many of you out there care about installing games to the HDD whenever you play, but just a head's up: Mass Effect 2 is supposedly going to take up ~14GBs when installed to the HDD. For those who still hold on to the 20GB HDDs, there's pretty much no way you're going to be able to install ME2. For those with the 60GB, 120GB, or 250GB () HDD - you'll be just fine.
So I take from this that you have to install both discs together, unlike other multi-disc games? If so, that sucks.

I thought I would ask next time I went back to a Gamestop, but I haven't in a while so I figured I ask here. What was up with them asking me my e-mail when I pre-ordered this? I didn't give him one, figured it was just so they had more info on me and could add to their system. But then I thought it might be related to the pre-order bonuses? Aren't those usually hand-outs when you come to pick up the game? Haven't really shopped/pre-ordered there in a while so maybe they are emailed now.

Email is just to send you the weekly coupons, email notifications of your preorders, and any other special offers. Some of the coupons are actually really good.

Oh ok thanks. I always just got those from the deal section here.

When you guys did multi-playthoughs, did you do them at the same time? Like play up to certain points then load up another character and make different choices? Or go all the way to the end.
So I take from this that you have to install both discs together, unlike other multi-disc games? If so, that sucks.
Actually, I'm pretty sure I read that you'll be able to install one game at a time. No real confirmation on that, though.

I play all the way through. Each time.

I'm not sure if I'd want it to tell you the truth. Then again it IS Mass Effect and Valve did deliver on L4D2. Hmm... we'll see. Didn't they finish writing the trilogy shortly after the release of the first game anyway? Eh... I just don't want them to rush greatness. Another 2+ year wait is fine by me. It'll give me more than enough time to know the sequel better than I know the original.

I thought I read somewhere that the Mass Effect story was written and completed before the first game was even released and that they are just tweaking and making minor changes to the story at this point.

Bioware seems committed to making the Mass Effect trilogy as high a quality product as possible, so if they can get the final part out in under two years I have faith it will be as good as the first two, if not better.

I'm a patient man so I'll wait for the complete trailer. I'd rather not add 15 seconds worth of torture to the process. ;(

On my second playthrough now (who knew Adepts could be this awesome? I can't even look at my Soldier Shep now) and I sincerely hope they wait until atleast a late 2011/early-2012 release of ME3. My biggest gaming regret lately has been not putting enough time into ME1 and I know now that ME2 will earn multiple playthroughs over the next year. If the final game comes to soon, I know I won't enjoy as much as if I had been forced to wait longer.

I think BioWare was waiting for me to post that, because the full version just got uploaded

----------------------------------------

I think this video is my new favorite. I was already pretty much sold on Subject Zero, but this video gets rid of any doubts

Color me impressed for a second time, but who is her VA? She's awesome. Such undeniable venom in her last remarks of validation giving us distinct shades of deep rooted resentment toward whomever made her into a psychotic killing machine.

It's a shame T'soni has now wore out her welcome with my canon Shep but out with the old and in with the new I suppose. Besides it's not as if my Shep can't have a change of heart in the final game. ;)

Good point. Judging from her crazed demeanor any spontaneous departure or threatening remark would only arouse or likely strengthen your relationship with her. She'd think it were a game. Damn crazy broads... sigh. Guess I'll have to kill her if she doesn't settle down somewhere along the journey or some years after the sequel. ^_^

The only question I have after the latest info dump is where the HELL is Jacob's reveal video? So far everyone who hasn't bothered to play Galaxy or done some reasonable amount of research has been treating him as the token "strong but silent a.k.a. always pissed off" black guy. Starting to get a bit old if you ask me. Couple in the fact I don't own nor do I possess the desire to buy an iPhone it is safe to say I'm yearning for some damn depth.

The only video I've seen Jacob featured in was a leaked video of your first meeting with him in the game. Along with Mordin, there's almost no information about Jacob compared to the wealth of information on everyone else.

Yeah... Mordin is another one I'm relatively clueless about though if they'd prefer to play those two close to the chest it is fine by me. I'm not the type to jump to immature conclusions so I'll remain patient until the 26th. Speaking of playing things close to the chest is anyone planning on reporting back here during their initial playthrough to give the rest of us a heads up on the effects of certain ME1 decisions (appropriately spoiled tagged of course)? I'm tempted especially if it'll help some of the more skeptical players decide on making a purchase.

I'll do it. I'll be getting the game at midnight, and playing almost non-stop.

I know that person won't be me. I may post the proverbial "BEST GAM3 EVARRR" posts here and there, but I'm going underground for the most part as soon as that game gets in my hands. Also, I'm not one to post spoilers that quickly. It'll be mid-February before I even start posting real, detailed impressions of the game - just to give everyone a fair chance to log in some decent hours. I won't frown upon it, though, like I would pre-game spoilers. Once January 26th rolls around, anything posted here is fair game - as long as it's clearly marked as a spoiler.

About the ME1 save loading...Anyone have any specifics about it? I heard some where that your character will only receive stat bonuses if you have reached level 60 in the first game. Is this true? And to what extent will the decisions made in the previous game affect things? I am aware that certain characters will or will not show up depending on choices you made.

It seems like things are going to be pretty trivial though.

I'm going to be getting the game at midnight as well, anyone know of any place that's having a midnight opening? Also planning on calling in sick the first day.

I hate Dr. Pepper but like most beverages I'll stomach it when cold especially if given free DLC in return for my trouble. It's likely something I could earn late game, rarely use or already have (pre-order or CE bonuses) but that's what CAG is for because I can save the codes to give away here in the future.

I just have to remind myself to buy some before they magically disappear as did the AXE MS PTS at Target.

Here's what I took from ME Galaxy:

Jacob does still seem to be the strong but silent type you mentioned. You are allowed to adjust his resonses somewhat just as you would Shephard but strong but silent seems to be the basis of his character.

Jacob has been released from his position within the Alliance and is looking for some time to relax and find something else to do with his life. The cruiser he's vacationing on is attacked by Batarian terrorists and he handles them.

He then gets to the Citadel where he's persuaded by his former commander to take an unsanctioned mission to see what the Batarians are up to because there may be an assassination attempt on the Batarian ambassador's life when the ambassador comes to the Citadel to propose a new peace treaty. He is told to go to the Terminus Systems and meet a shadowy operative named Miranda.

He takes care of some pirates raising ruckus on the station that's the main hub (I believe its the same one you go to in ME 2, not for sure) and you meetup with Miranda and followup on her three leads to get the answers regarding the Batarian plot.

On one of the worlds, Jacob is exposed to monumental amounts of eezo and develops biotic powers (before then he was some type of soldier/infiltrator combo as he had overload and rpg as his special moves, and could pick up any weapon powerup.)

In the end you learn the Batarian ambassador is the leader of the Batarian terrorists and he wants to use a bioweapon to kill the Council and everyone on the Citadel. Jacob stops him and the game ends with him and Miranda enjoying some bubbly on the ship and presumably getting it on.

Guest-56: is Tali a romance option?

CaseyH-ME2: In ME1 Tali was kind of a young character, on her "pilgrimage", so she wasn't a love interest option. One cool thing ME1 players will notice is that the characters they know and love from the first game have grown up and moved on a bit. Tali is more mature now. We were surprised to see how many people were interested in her as a love interest, given that she wore a mask, was an alien, and as one of our team members said, she had "chicken feet". Will she take things further with you? There's a great story there, but I won't spoil it for you!
Please let that be a yes...

Load times from the first game were pretty outrageous, what with the elevators. Might have to go out and buy the 60GB starter pack. Too bad I need a transfer kit...
I'm a little creeped out by the amount you guys care about our romance choices in ME2
You gotta admit it's interesting, though.

Just wish they'd include an Elcor/Hanharr love interest...

I installed the game for my second playthrough and the load times are defintely improved. I do get a fair bit of lag during combat and in large areas (Citadel is almost unbearable) and I'm not sure if this is owing to the install.

Elevator times, unfortunately, appear to be hardcoded, so nothing to take away that huge mood-killer. I just look ahead in my guide(s) when I have to wait on an elevator.
Just wish they'd include an Elcor/Hanharr love interest...
The Elcor are my favorite race. I would definitely hit that.

"Elcor: Slightly amused tone, do you truly believe I would engage you in a mating process?

Shepard: We don't have time for these games! Humanity, nay, the galaxy needs this!

Elcor: Aroused yet pensive, so be it human Shepard. This one cannot dismiss such a well-constructed argument."

That is both disturbing and awesome.

I just like the speech throwback to HK47. The stuff the Elcor say isn't nearly as cool, but I love the sentence structure just the same.
I'm a little creeped out by the amount you guys care about our romance choices in ME2
This idea (whether you meant it as being serious or not) is starting to become one of those "high-horse" things that casual fans of the game are tagging on to the more hardcore fans. It's really simple: the game, in part, is a love story (if you want it to be). Since you're not just stuck with generic female NPC and you actually have options, it makes sense that with a sequel coming out you'll want more options. It's less about virtual/digital humping and more about having someone be your male/female Shepard's love interest throughout the story (well..for some people).
Load times from the first game were pretty outrageous, what with the elevators.
Outrageous may be, in itself, a pretty outrageous word to use for the load times. I think (at the worst) they are "pretty bad in some spots" - namely, Noveria.

I've put more hours into the game than I care to admit, and I've never experienced this; and I also have the game installed.

I got lag too. Right before my system died on me.

3 new things I wanted to update:

1. The final class video - the Soldier class - will be up later today on IGN. I'll have links here when it hits.

2. BioWare announced a new novel in the works due out later this year. Some details can be found here. It looks to be a prequel to ME3.

3. In a recent GameTrailers interview, Casey Hudson dropped this line:
We also added the ability to have a romance with some of the characters from Mass Effect 1 that you haven't been able to before.
The reaction from that sentence has all the Tali fans in the world going crazy. It's not a real confirmation for anything, but it does begin to make people doubt even less

New book sounds cool. I liked the first two, especially the second. So I'll definitely be up for a 3rd.

As for the possible Tali news:

Well said. Mass Effect is the first and will remain the only video game where I can't help but give a damn about the romantic possibilities of the main character due to the level of character depth, options and customization. Something you wont find in an average RPG where you're dragged kicking and screaming through one nauseatingly cliche love story begging to skip through the next disaster of a cut scene because you honestly couldn't care less. Why? Well... probably because it wasn't actually entertaining or thought provoking. It wasn't interesting nor engaging... and certainly wasn't a fun part of the game play by any means. As far as you were concerned it was just there. And why should you bother to care when you had absolutely no control over it?

You couldn't man up Squall at your whim forcing him to grow a pair and ditch ol' annoying ass chicken legged Rinoa for the rest of Final Fantasy 8. I know I couldn't lure Fei Fong Wong away from Elly into the waiting arms of Miang to spice up the story more in Xenogears. I don't recall the option for Ramza to create a hilarious cat fight between Agrias & Meladoul in FFT either so why shouldn't I care about a well designed aspect of game play I enjoy that I've yet to experience until now? No differently than running over innocent pedestrians in Grand Theft Auto or tea bagging an asshole who's Host in Gears 2 multiplayer?

It's sort of sad some of the more immature or flat out ignorant instantly assume the worst of those who bother to show concern for certain features they themselves clearly are too well grounded in reality to be interested in. You know instead of just flat out minding their own business when said enthusiasm is more or less equal to fantasizing over the next batch of weaponry and recon armor in Halo Reach compared to other forums.

Then again I guess because I'd like my Shepard to be a two timing womanizer this time around for personal amusement I must vicariously live through all of my Shepard profiles behind closed doors.

Now if you'll excuse me I'd better call my girl before this Quarian Envirosuit I spent most of last year making starts collecting dust. It isn't going to wear itself after all. That would be silly! ^_^
