MLB 2010 Discussion Thread

Twins are beating the Royals 17-0 in the 7th. Greinke started the game and gave up 8 earned runs which is more earned runs compared to what he gave up last season.

Sox/Angels game is even more absurd in my book. Sox stranded runners in the 2nd inning with no outs and the Angels had the bases loaded with no outs and failed to score a run in the second inning as well.

He thought he was playing for the Roid Sox. Poor guy!

in all seriousness, are the Sox buyers or sellers on Saturday? 5.5 out of the WC and 8.5 out of the East right now. Far from over but that is a ton of ground to catch up on and one bad stretch should put them out of it.

They're buyers because they can't justify doing anything else, but they're not going to move any of their top prospects. They're not out of the wildcard yet but they're close to it.

They'll definitely get some bullpen help, maybe a bat and they'll try to move Lowell. Nothing too major unless it fits into their plans for next year.

Angels are pissing me off big time tonight. Losing by 1 run in a game where they had the bases loaded with no outs and failed to score after 2 pop outs and a ground out. They definitely want the Rangers to win the West.
I hate the Angels!!!!!!!!!!!! Papi just crushed another homerun. Must have been drinking his Milk Shakes before today.
A Roid needs to drink one, so he can get in the 600 club.

What an embarrassment. Some rookie scrub pitcher in his first start ever is dominating the Yankees. 1 lousy hit and zero walks through 6 innings. This performance is 10000 times more impressive than any of the no hitters or perfect games so far this year. I pray that Joe rips each player a new asshole after the game.

Thats often how it is with good veteran lineups. They depend a lot on scouting reports and having faced the pitcher before, when someone completely unfamiliar comes along they don't know what to do. Happens all the time.

Happens all of the time to the Yankees.

Oh man, if that doesn't make you empathize with Huston Street nothing will. Absolutely insane.

In slightly unrelated news, Philly closed their deficit to 3.5 games in the East, but Victorino got hurt. How does this change their efforts to move Werth? More importantly, does this kill any remaining chance of getting Oswalt?

EDIT: Victorino has a strained left oblique according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com

Eh, I found it entertaining. Especially against CC. Of course if Perez would have finished his partial 9th inning collapse and given up a walk-off grand-slam for A-Rod's 600th it's all anyone would have been talking about. (It's also what I was expecting.)

Yankees and their Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde offense. Cant touch a scrub rookie who will be out of baseball in 3 years but they have rocked Fausto All Star Carmona in the first 2 innings.

It's like dafoomie said, when you get this high up, for most players, it's not "see ball, hit ball" anymore. It's about scouting reports and sitting on pitches. It's hard to do that with a guy with virtually no history. It's not that his pitches were great. It's not knowing the tendencies and patterns. It frustrates me too, but as long as it doesn't start some kind of team-wide slump, it won't bother me. It's not like they're going to win every game anyway.

No, the Yankees offense really is Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde. Just look at that interleague stretch of games. They beat up on Halladay but got their ass kicked by Rodrigo Lopez a couple of nights later.

Yankees lost to Rodrigo Lopez, Jamie Moyer, Jay Kendrick and Takashi. During that same stretch they beat Halladay, Santana, Pelfrey and Haren.

Yankees lead 7-0 in the 3rd inning and knock out All Star Carmona.

Problem with the Yankees offense is that they cannot hit changeups and pitchers who throw absolute junk.

Ooooo and I hate the Tigers as much as I hate the Angels. Did the Tigers even bother to show up in Tampa?

arod cannot hit 600 soon enough. Get it over with because it feels like it's going to happen in 2020 and he is pressing.

2 great games going on tonight. Johan Santana gave up 6 runs in the top of the first. Mets trailed 7-3 in the bottom of the 8th and have now tied it up. Cardinals have one of the worst pens in baseball if not the worst.

Giants had a 9-2 lead in the top of the 7th against the Marlins and the Marlins scored 5 in the 7th and 2 in the top of the 9th to tie the game.

mets are the biggest cocktease in baseball. Tie the game up and lose in extra innings at home.

HAHAHAHA. You need to post a video. I wish I saw that but the Yankees scored 8 runs quickly and the rest of the game got boring. I only watched the ARod at bats after.

What's up with Johan and having these starts where he totally falls apart? He will pitch 5 or 6 great games and then have a game like tonight's. Obviously a pitcher is going to have his off nights but this year when Johan has been off he just gets destroyed. His ERA is above 3 again. I expect him to lower it under 3 after the next few starts.

Also, why does Jerry Manuel use Feliciano as a guy to pitch to both lefties and righties? Has he not proved that he cannot pitch to right handed batters. The man is a left handed specialist, let's keep it that way. Why make him something that he is not?

houson's FOX 26 reporting #Astros, #Phillies have deal for Oswalt. hed still have to approve deal, assuming true.

Stark is reporting that it's Happ plus prospects for Oswalt. So the Fillies trade off Lee for prospects. Just so that they can trade Happ plus prospects to get a downgrade in Oswalt. Lee and Halladay would have been Johnson/Schilling 2001 Dbacks.

Ruben Amaro, GM of the Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not making excuses for Manuel but the Mets had used 6 relief pitchers up to that point. A majority of the relief pitchers have seen a ton of innings, especially recently when the Mets lost several extra inning games. Offense wasn't showing anything after the 8th inning for the last 5 innings. Manuel was trying to get extra outs from whomever he had left in the pen. Who was left? Ollie?

Not crazy about the deal either, but I am hoping that Amaro is going into this deal like he did with Halladay, where he dealt for him with a previously discussed deal that he could sign him to an extension.

Otherwise, I don't like the deal at all, to be perfectly honest. I'd rather have one year of Lee then a year and a half of Oswalt. Although come playoff time, I certainly won't be complaining.

It is also dependent on the prospects, of course.

would have went Valdes instead at that spot. He was hotter and he can pitch both ways. Feliciano at the end of it all sucks. Im done having any faith in him getting through a big spot. He has been yucking it up lately. Valdes on the other hand has been 100x more dependable and solid than Feliciano has been this year. Parnell has also pitched well. Let those guys duke it out for the 8th...and leave feliciano to the lefites and thats it.

after a long well deserved hiatus im back....all to see that the Mets are 10-20 in their last 30 games and they just look like complete shit out there. This loss hurt the most out of all them since they battled back, gave you that ounce of hope and then take that hope away with trying to challenge Albert Pujols. Man....what were you thinking.

Whatever im at the point of acceptance where ill never be able to watch the NY Mets ever play a meaningful game. 3 1/2 years and its just pure torture. the walk off losses, the road woes, the worst managing/ownership combination ever to run a ball club. I wish Madoff took all the Wilpons money so they would be forced to sell the team.

edit:trust me, I know there is worse out there with the clubs like teh Pirates,Royals,Mariners..........but they do not cock tease like the Mets do. Only the Mets can fuck with your emotions to thinking you will win in to losing it all it all in fowl swoop. I hate this team more and more I think about it.

CLEVELAND -- A fan wearing a Miami Heat jersey of LeBron James drew the ire of the crowd at a Cleveland Indians game and was escorted out of the ballpark.

Fans in the left-field bleachers chanted obscenities and pointed at the man Wednesday night during the sixth inning of the game between the Indians and New York Yankees. Hundreds of fans joined in before security led the man out of Progressive Field.

As he left, some fans followed him toward the gate with more derisive chants.

James' recent departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Heat caused a lot of anger in the city.

Many fans were near the left-field foul pole in hopes of catching the 600th home run ball by Alex Rodriguez.

What a douche. All he was there for was to incite hate from the fans. What a jerk.

Espn is reporting that the Stros are going to send over 11 million as well.

Espn is also reporting that Buck Showalter is going to take over August 3rd as the manager of the Orioles.

Damn. Not good news for the Braves. But their toast anyway if they can't find away to win on the road. One of the best (if not the best) home records, but losing road record.

sounds like another team in the NL East but by far worse lol.

Mets win 2/3 all of the time at home but only win 1/3 on the road all of the time. That comes out to 82 wins.

yep by far worse. They can beat anyone in their house but probably can't even touch the pirates or royals on the road.

Sorry to say this but if MLB was going to let Cuban be an owner he would have been allowed to buy the Cubs.

There is precedent though for winning the WS with a bad road record. 87 Twins (29-52) and 06 Cardinals (34-47).

Only know the exact road records because this was discussed on ESPN Baseball Today podcast.

Cards have 7th best bullpen ERA in the majors. Usually when they collapse, 90% of the time its some combination of Mitchell Boggs (as it was last night,) Kyle McClellan, Dennys Reyes, or Ryan Franklin. And Boggs is BY FAR the worst pitcher the Cardinals have. Their bullpen record is 14-15 with 23 saves so it's not the best, but it ain't the Diamondbacks.

Cantu to the Rangers?? Are you fucking kidding me? Why is this team allowed to make moves when everybody else has to pay for it. give me a break.
Who said he wasn't allowed?
Well it looks like just this week he was officially approved to try to put in a bid unlike with the Cubs, but it's been reported by ESPN and Sports Illustrated and other sites in the past that Selig and company do not like him and will do anything to keep him out. That's why he was rejected as a bidder for the Cubs and instead it went to someone who had to borrow all the money and could put the Cubs in the position the Rangers are in now if his finances take a turn for the worse.

Yeah, just have to win the division or Wildcard is my worry, especially with the Phillies on a winning streak and just getting Oswalt.

I think the Braves would do very well in the post season if they get there. Especially if they can finish with the best record in the NL and thus have home field the whole way--but that will be tough if they don't start doing better on the road.

Selig not liking him was pure speculation. Cuban was able to put in a formal bid for the cubs. He just wasn't able to raise the funds to get the team. The ricketts where the only ones who could secure that type of money. Tribune was the ones that decided who got the team, not MLB. Although they did need approval in the end, Cuban was never rejected.
