New Super Mario Bros -- Out Now!
I discovered you can do that in Super Princess Peach as well (but I think you can jump on him too, in addition to hitting him with the umbrella). Problem is the cloud doesn't last long so it's really no good for getting to anything.
Except secrets.
Except secrets.
I'm talking about Super Princess Peach - the clouds don't last long enough to get you up to where some of the secrets are (plus it seems levels with Lakitu usually don't have bonus items). They are easier to get other ways. If you mean NSMB, I have no idea (yet!). If that's what you meant, I'll keep it in mind. I'm going to play through NSMB first without reading any FAQs and see if I can find any secrets on my own. Of course, my OCD will require that I find/unlock every last thing (which is why I tend not to start many of the games I have sitting around - I figure I'll never have time to get 100% so why start? :D). So I'm sure I'll resort to a FAQ at some point.

I just beat Bowser Jr. in the first mid-boss fight. I'm loving this game. I make sure to get all the Star Coins before I move on so I can open up all the paths.

P.S. Thanks fo the Luigi trick.

just beat it. It's a bit short, but the 3 coins per level will get some more replay... not too much though since I got most of them. This is a great game, but I may put my copy up on ebay tonight since it ended pretty fast. Not that I don't like the game, I just don't see myself owning it longterm.

oh, and kid koopa is a badass in this game... as well as bowser in his two later boss fights.

I ended up skipping class to get this game yo.

I coulda gone to class,

and learned how to compute the local truncation error for the difference scheme:

w_0 = alhpa

w_1 = alpha1

w_i+1 = 4w_i - 3w_i-1 - 2hf(t_i-1,w_i-1)

which of course ends up being

tao_i+1(h) = (2/3)(h^3)y'''(kesi) where kesi is in (t_i-1,t_i+1)

....

but instead I skipped class to get mario.

You must have skipped alot of English classes for games, huh?
english class?!?!?!

pffffft!

I dont gotta take that!

english class is for the weak.

THE WEAK!!!
Walk into an interview and drop a bombshell like, "I don't gotta take English, yo! Das for da WEAK!!!" I suspect they'll hire you straight into a management position.

EDIT: Not that I have perfect grammar, but Roufuss, it's "a lot."

Anyway, I figure I've put about four hours into this game, and I've gotten all the Star Coins in Worlds 1-3 and most in World 5. I'm still working on a few alternate exits, too. For those of you complaining/criticizing the length, I think you have some hunting to do. Granted, I tend to be a bit on the slow side as far as games go, but I would guess it should take at least seven or eight hours for a skilled player to get 100%; after that, it's speed-run time. This is a Super Mario Bros. game, you know.
Hey I grew up in Berkeley, Thief. Wish I could move back there but I'm not a multi-millionaire :D.
Yeah, I know the feeling. Once school's done and financial aid stops, I'm gone.

Anyway, I think the difficulty is just perfect. It's easy enough to get into, but bitch-slaps you if you make a mistake (I died three times in the first mid-way castle trying to get that fucking Star Coin in the third room). Fantastic.

I'm half way through World 2, and it's just great. I miss playing a new Mario on the TV, though...great memories of every new Mario game I got like that. *sigh*

Oh, and the Blue Shell sucks. Unless you're underwater or they built the entire level around it (like somewhere near the end of World 1), pretty much useless.

Played a little two-player star grab game, as well as an assortment of the minigames. It is kind of fun to play the minigames on shuffle mode and just get random things. Sort of Mario Partyish. We were familiar with most of those games from Super Mario 64, so my son knew how to play them. Kind of cool with the multiplayer angle though.

As for the regular "Mario vs Luigi" mode, that is kind of fun too - first to collect 5 stars and you can beat them out of each other :D. Not a lot of depth, but fun for a short time.

I just finished the first world and I only have one complaint (or maybe I missed it)... is there any way to save without beating a mid or end boss or mushroom houses of each stage?

It's really annoying to do if you go back to collect all the big coins in each stage and you can't save your progress unless you beat a new mid/end boss.

You didn't miss it, there isn't another way to save. Just be happy you can!

Oh well, I guess it's not big deal since those coins only seem to unlock the mushroom houses for items. And I am glad you can save (yeah, sucked not being able to in the first three SMB on the NES) though it's a step back form Super Mario World 1/2 where you could save at anytime or it'd auto save.
You didn't miss it, there isn't another way to save. Just be happy you can!
Yes there is.

Every time you unlock a toad house (the ones where you have to use 5 star coins to open the road) it asks you if you want to save.

I don't open them until I'm ready to save.

Got it tonight at Target. I've got all the coins and secrets (i think) in world one, and I'm working on getting the coins in World 2. I have 3, 4 and 5 unlovked, but haven't played them...

This game is great. :D

Just got it. Put some decent time into it, but I'm still on World 1 for the reason I'm getting all the star coins.

Anyone know how to put it in sleep mode or something like that? When saving isn't convenient?

I don't think you mean just shutting the DS? Are you asking if there is an option in the game for sleep mode? I'm not quite sure, but I think I remember the Mario Deluxe having a feature like this.

Got it yesterday. Beat it a minute ago. Credits are rolling now.

I thought it was pretty easy...

WAY easier than 3 or World.

Then again, I haven't gone to ALL the worlds yet.

Yeah, I already mentioned that... I guess that's better than nothing but I have be careful so that I don't run out of coins (kinda like the RE ribbon fiasco in the pre-RE4 games).

I just realized how HUGE (as in the number of levels) this game is... :hot:

Graphics, gameplay, music, everything, excellentttttt. Only problem is that my fingers start hurting after a while (I don't have a DS lite yet....)

Been playing it for a couple hours and beat the first 2 worlds getting all but 2 of the giant coins. So far I'm loving it.

But I have one concern. Pretty much all the sounds in the game (notably Mario's voice-acting as well as the fireball shooting sound) have sort of an echo-like effect. Like it's all a bit deep and mumbled. I began to think there was soemthing either wrong with my DS or my copy of the game, but the music sounds alright. So are the sounds like this with everyone else?

What sound setting do you have it on?
The default one
I didn't notice it, but I think things got a lot cleaner when I used headphones. There's 3 settings by the way; surrond (default), headphones, and stereo. Try setting it to stereo.

*ahem* not sure about SMW2 as I didn't play it all that much, but SMW only let you save after you finished a fortress, switch palace or ghost house. Just a correction. It wasn't until The Lost Levels on Super Mario All-Stars that Nintendo first allowed saving after every world.

Oh and for whoever back there wanted a balls-out tough as nails Mario platformer, I respectfully suggest you haven't played the Lost Levels (aka Super Mario 2 Japan).

Way easy.. I'm on world 6 and I got it around 8 hours ago.. shame it's so easy, but it's a blast, will definately go back to get 100%.. love this game.

I've had the same problems with some games... it's usually due to the bad speaker design. The NSMB echo can easily be fixed. Just close the DS lid for a few seconds and then open again. Mario will say bye bye and then hello, and all should go well ;) hope that helps. I'm guessing the Lite will fix the speaker problem.

As a side note, I jsut got this game today and love it, but something is really lacking... I'm guessing the "Epic-ness" of most mario games was more minor this tme around. The game felt more of like a culmination of all the best elements from the 2d mario games... superb game, but I just can't hold onto it.

If anyone is interested, contact me before late tommorow if you want to buy my copy, though I reccomend the CC deal. Awsomegame none the less though.
Somehow I missed World 4 completely. I don't know how the hell I managed that...
Something like World's 4 and 7 are completely optional. So you can just skip them and be able to beat the game.

That sounds like the opposite of the original SMB... didn't you have to at least beat 1, 4, 7, and 8?

Close the DS's lid. :)

1-1, 1-2 =>warp 4-1, 4-2 => warp, 8-1, 8-2, 8-3, 8-4 done.

Close but not quite.

Yeah, 7 just sounded familiar, but then I realized only 3 worlds were involved and I was too lazy to edit. ;)

I'll be picking up my copy tonight, finally.

I said it in another forum and I'll say it here, I think people have a problem with remembering the older mario games difficulty compared to NSMB. Especially if you're going to take the time to go for the coins.

Man this game really took me back. My 9 yr old son was watching me play it and he was like "Wow dad, you're really good at this game". Little does he know that back in the day Super Mario Brothers was all we played for hours and hours until our thumbs blistered and our hands looked like a 90 yr old suffering from arthritis.

Anyway, I am really enjoying this although I have only gotten to play it for like 20 minutes. I especially liked the Giant Mario, that was cool.
Yea, I played it back in the day of All Stars... I forgot how much fun it was. I wish Nintendo would do something like that again.

I think I'll fire up the ol SNES and play it through again.

Watching my girlfriend try to play it is hilarious. She's so timid that the timer is her worst enemy. She never runs, she'll stand still and plan out every little jump, she has to kill every enemy she sees...

Then it will be fun to watch her on the enemy respawning pipes!

Just curious to those who've already blasted through, and if you could be as spoiler-free as possible in your answers, but how difficult is it to get all three coins in all levels of the later worlds? Is it as easy as world 1? Because I spent about 1 hour last night going through all of world 1 making sure I got every coin in every level, and I'm just wondering if it gets any harder. I know, based on some reviews, that the game gets harder in general, but I'm hoping it will be rather time-consuming (and consequently more rewarding) to get all the coins in every single world.

BTW I frickin love the game, love the graphics, love the gameplay, and think that even though I went into world 2 with 40 or so lives already, that the game is no harder or easier than SMB 1 on the NES...SMB 3 was harder I would say, but SMB World was easier again, so I agree with whoever said that people need to go back and play the older games again and realize that its not the games that are hard or easy per se, but the fact that we've played the damn formula/gameplay of SMB games so much that we're all pro.

I'll say they definitely get harder, but I was able to find them all without the assist of a strategy guide.

There's only a few that are actually tricky to accomplish once you work out how to get them.

Regarding the three coins,

yeah, it gets harder. Well, I guess it depends on how good of a player you are, but yeah, some are harder to get.

And my thoughts on the game, since the credits are rolling:

I blasted through the game and finished it in about 6-8 hours. That's a pretty decent length for a Mario game. My major disappointment was the final boss. It's Bowser, obviously, but it can still be beat the easy way.. if you're big, just run forward, get hit, then jump on the thingy to kill the bridge. I also heard this had wi-fi co-op, and i'm really disappointed to see that it doesn't. There's not even cart-to-cart multiplayer. However, even though I beat it, I won't get rid of it. I still need to get a lot of the coins, and the game's fantastic and a great time killer. The only thing that would've been cool on one world is Yoshi.

I'm also sad that "Mega Mario" wasn't used much. Apart from the first level, I got the giant mushroom like.. three times. That turtle power was AWESOME though.

I also heard there's a boot from Mario 3 in one of the worlds. Haven't found it yet. I haven't been to world 3 or 7 yet. Back to playing more!

I just found this out.. sorry if you already knew.. if you're Mega Mario, do butt pounds.. coins and enemies fall from the sky, sometimes 1-ups.

I'm up to World 5 and for me at least I don't think the game is easier than Mario 3. I don't really remember Mario World though. Seems about as difficult as I'd expect compared to the originals, though you do get a ton of lives. Obviously, since I'm not done I don't know how the last few levels compare.

One of the sweetest things that I have encountered so far (I just beat Baby Bowser in world 2) is that the turtle on the "stairs" 1up trick still works! It's actually easier in this version since you don't have to repeatedly hit jump to keep bouncing off the turtle. I'm assuming everyone knows what I am talking about.

The only little trick that I have not seen that has been in past Mario games is being able to get a boosted jump when landing on top of a mushroom. I know in SMB, if you landed Mario on top of a mushroom and held A, you would get a boosted jump similar to when you land on an ememie's head and hold down jump.

I am more than amazed with this game.. wow. I was very hyped and it still goes past my expectations. It's just right in difficulty, plenty of new and old elements. The Minigames are great. I love the music. etc, etc... 9.5/10. .5 loss for no WiFi Connection. But that's just cause i needed to find something to complain about..

another vote for, "great game"
its very very fun, feels like a perfect evolution from
the previous games.

im very very pleased.

Did miyamoto play any part in making this one? I only played enough to get through some of the first world so far, but I think the small screen also has a lot to do with it. But the gameplay fun is all there. I can't wait for Super Paper Mario.

I was playing for an hour in one of my universities buildings study rooms and there was a guy there with a blue DS...I was going to "psst" him over and ask him if he wanted to download off me and we could try the 2-player, but i pussed out. Anyone here try it yet? Worth the effort?

I don't mean to be nit-picky but you didn't have to smash the jump button in the original SMB either.

And I don't think I've ever observed what you're taking about in the second paragraph, could you be more specific? Do you mean a power-up mushroom or a mushroom platform or some magical third type of mushroom appliance I missed in my repeated play throughs?
