Oblivion for PS3/PSP Officially Confirmed by OPM Cover (new info from the mag itself)

From the 1UP review:

But the version sitting on store shelves right now is inferior to its brethren on other platforms. So I can really only recommend it if you don't own a 360 or a PC capable of running the game well. In other words, it's one of the best games ever -- but don't buy it unless you have no other choice.

At least, for now.

Really confusing review, actually, although I can see where he's coming from. His main (only?) real beef with the game is the fact that it doesn't support downloadable content at the moment, even though this is expected to be resolved.

Graphically it sounds like it is mostly the same as the 360 version (a few minor areas are better, a few are worse) although I wonder if the minor problems he mentioned might not be fixed with a patch. Oh well, I'm going to get it just because I need something to play on the PS3 and I want to encourage them to develop for the system.
say what?! EB price matches!
Yeah, just make sure you bring in the physical ad with you, which I did, and I Got it for 50$, it was fricken sweet, especially since there isn't a CC by my house but a EB games is just 2 mins away.

Luckily, CC was smart enough not to put in the ad when the game was released. :)

thanks, I definitely was unaware of this.

I think he got lucky. I'm pretty sure EB's official policy is to not PM.

I just happened to get a $5 Gamefly coupon today (you get one every 3 months you're a member), which combined with my 5% discount on games made the "Keep It" price for Oblivion $40, so I got it from there. It just came out, so the game I'm receiving is actually brand new.

I have some n00b questions, if any experts can help:

--is it possible to join more than one guild?

--this one may be obvious, but when you are told to go to bed and meditate to level up, do enemies scale up then or is it after you add the new stats?

You can join every guild.

I'm pretty sure the enemies level after you level.

What differences have you seen between the PS3 and 360 versions? Does this one run a lot smoother?

It said on the receipt (competitive price) and I have done it twice now with two different games.

Yeah, it's definitely smoother. there are some frame hiccups and dropped frames, but not nearly to the same extent. it runs near perfect. Loading is barely noticeable aside from waiting, sleeping, and warping. I couldn't get in to the 360 version since it had crashed on me and seemed to drop frames way too much--felt like my system was about to die when I played the game. But I'm downright hooked to this...

Another question-- where can I find good storage for my stuff?

 I want.

Until you get enough money to buy a house (the cheapest one is in Bravil, by the way), your best bet is to either just sell off everything you don't really need or keep it in random houses, chests, or guilds. The latter is probably the best choice.

Cool, maybe I'll just start thieving to save up for a house :)

I added some stuff to the other post. I don't think the difference will be as significant for everyone since I'm really picky, though. a few fixed technical things made a big difference for me

I should mention-- I put in about 4 hours last night and towards the end it wasn't running as smooth, probably because of all the heat in the PS3.
The weird thing about Oblivion is how it powers up your enemies as you go up in level. On the one hand, it means that you'll always have something of a challenge, but on the other you don't ever really have that moment you get in so many RPGs where you can go back and totally kick the ass of some monster that gave you trouble in your early levels.
I know on the PC version, the monsters would level up when your character leveled up... but the NPCs did not level up. I read that that could cause difficulty in completing the main quest because the NPCs become insignificant and of little help. I don't know though because I got tired of the game before long. It was TOO open ended for me --- does that makes sense?

good to hear the PS3 version turned out well so far.. Been playing this again and it's such a great game. Anyone know if the PS3 optimizations are coming to 360? I heard rumblings that a patch was in the works to bring the 360 version up to spec with the 360 version, or that shivering isles was going to do that..

I heard it would get a visual update to look on par with the PS3 version. Not sure about anything else being updated in the game. I don't think load times would be able to improve over a firmware update.

Strange that this game is getting no coverage at all anywhere.

no reviews, no ads. It's not that old :)
I tried two gamestops (formerly eb) but they both said NO...
Hmmm that is really strange. I wonder if it's just my EB games then?

its probably a region thing, but here in Miami, all the eg game stores, now have gamestop logos on them... one eb was pretty new not its gamestop. if I'm ever out of town, I'll try it again... or at least ask them.

I have a question. Is it possible to make your character not look like shit?

I spent a good hour trying but that character creater is just.....too picky.
I have a question. Is it possible to make your character not look like shit?
It's possible, but there are some real problems with the faces that the game allows you to create. Many of them just don't look right. The fact that you can't have any facial hair (beyond very thick five o'clock shadow) doesn't help matters. Of course, you don't see your own face all that often in the game. Basically just on the equipment/abilities screen.

My Breton spellsword is a sexy bitch.

Thanks everyone... I was able to pick up Oblivion at BB for 49.99, now I'm going to take a trip to comp usa and try to get the xbox 360 guide which was on clearance... should be the same info...

Drop the age first so they don't look 70 years old, then adjust from there.

What's the install size on the HDD?

4gb and some change
What's the install size on the HDD?
By install do you mean save? If not, how do you do the install thing to quicken load times?
By install do you mean save? If not, how do you do the install thing to quicken load times?
It does it automatically at the beginning without telling you.

I have no clue what I'm doing in this game

So far I've gotten arrested like...10 times and pirates attacked me :p

There's a main quest hidden in the game, right?

So, what's the likelihood of offering downloadable content for this game on the PS3? This is going to be the differencemaker, IMO, in whether I get it on 360 or PS3. The graphical differences are so negligible as to make any discussion of them silly, to be honest.

I'm pretty sure it's been announced that downloadable content will be coming. It's just a matter of when.

It's coming for sure, at some point. The graphical differences are pretty much null, but you'll appreciate the smoothness of the PS3 version.

I can't see myself getting around to any of them, personally. the game already has wayyyyy too much to do.

I know what you mean. There's no right way to start it...you could join some guilds-- you'll get guild quests which require you to travel everywhere in the game and you'll pick up a ton of sidequests along the way. Then go explore a cave for a few hours, fight in the arena for cash, etc. etc.

or spend time training and plotting revenge on the pirates

I got the invitation to join the Theifs Guild I think, but I can't find the place. It says go to some garden place at the waterfront at midnight.

I see NO garden place!! :p

You might have to add the quest to your active quests. that's under the map in the menu. after you do that, the marker will point you right to it. I think it's actually just behind some guys house (not like a huge garden or anything.)

Joystiq ran an article a while back saying that the PS3 was somehow technically incapable of using downloadable options, and of course there were plenty of numbskulls in the comments with detailed theories as to why this was (apparently the PS3's limited memory wouldn't allow it to use that nifty horse armor...) But as they often are, Joystiq was wrong, and they never really printed a proper retraction either.

Anyway, this IGN article has the skinny on downloadable content in Oblivion for the PS3.

There were two specific reasons behind why items like the Orrery and Mehrunes's Razor will not be included within the PS3 version of the game. First of all, there was a concern about the balancing of the game and initially giving players access to a thieves den or a wizard's tower immediately at the start of the game. "There was no good way to incorporate these features into the game as soon as it started because it didn't make sense," Hines said. While he didn't rule out the possibility of some of these side quests or features making it into the game, it wouldn't necessarily be as soon as the game hit store shelves.

In fact, the other reason why the downloadable content for the PS3 version of the game isn't included isn't solely because of the technical limitations of the system. Instead, it's because the designers haven't actually tested the PlayStation Network Store and the mechanisms for delivering content to systems. Considering that the development team has been spending a large amount of time making sure that the game transitions over to the PS3 well without the numerous bugs or glitches that plagued the PC and 360 versions of the game, working on the store was definitely a low priority on their list when it came to dedicating additional resources to that feature. But it is being worked on, and it will be coming at a later date.

It's at the waterfront, in the shanty town area. In the backyard of a house. The house has one of those ground level basement doors in back of it. Hard to miss since if you go at the right time Armand Christopher is there with a torch.

It is overwhelming at times. I lost myself in the game, and had hit 100 hours without even noticing. I've done all the guilds and the main quest, and a ton of the other missions. I even have all the downloadable content (hopefully they'll give you guys Mehrune's Razor at least). Still stuff I haven't done. It's why I'm scared of Shivering Isles yet eagerly anticipate it at the same time. I'm going to disappear for like two months when it comes out.
I almost got robbed.. by some thundercat wanna be... LOL this games is too much.
LOL, at the thundercat reference. That happened to me also.
I almost got robbed.. by some thundercat wanna be... LOL this games is too much.
LOL me too, but i RAPED that thundercat. This game is beyond what i expected. So much to do, so little time. I think i may try to start that knights of the nine sidequest (it's built in the ps3 version right?)

Yes it is, I am anxious to do that as well.
Its in there for sure but I don't know how or where to find it.
If it's like the 360 version, speak with one of the people inside the temple at Anvil. He should tell you about attacks that have been happening.
Any easy place to find a lockpick? I need one but can't seem to find one now that i actually NEED It
There's a guy near the Imperial City named Shady Sam who sells them. Also once you hit level 10 you can do a quest that will net you the skeleton key. It's basically an unbreakable lockpick.

North/South/East/West of the Imperial City?
Ok, cool. Thanks

And uh...what's the story of bound items? Can I never take the bound armor off or soemthing?
Bound items are for magic users. It allows them to use armor and weapons without having to carry them around, since mages tend to have low strength. They last for a certain amount of time, and then disappear.
