Most Asked Question...WHEN PRICES DROP?

All stores vary when prices will drop because it depends on how well the inventory is selling. If selling fairly well the store could possibly stay open longer, if not, the store may close down earlier preventing any further discounts from happening. From what I've noticed most price drops happen once a week (days vary) and then the last two weeks they drop much quicker...every 3 days or so. Hope this info helps!

CURRENT LIQUIDATION GAME SALE INFO

The first 800 HWV store closings have finished and all stores are beginning the process over again. You will need to check in with your area store periodically about current discounts because each store is different. Current Speculation is that all stores will be closed within 10 weeks...so by July.

I do not have a master list of prices unfortunately. Most stores have gone through and price stickered the older games. There is a possibility of the newer games being price stickered as well, but until then, you will have to inquire about the price with the employee. Most prices for the newer games in the computer range between $30-$50 and then take whatever their current discount is off that price.

Special Ordering Used or New Video Games

Beginning December 14th, ALL Hollywood Video stores will have the ability to place New & Used GAME Special Orders. Customers who cannot find games or accessories can place a Special Order and have it shipped from any Game Crazy/Game Zone store to their Hollywood Video for pick-up.

* Shipping Fee is $6.00 (Possibly per game if being shipped from different locations)
* Most Special Orders arrive within 7 days of ordering
* Outlet Stores do not participate in Special Orders, so YMMV on all stores.

Special Orders include:

Strategy Guides
New & Used Controllers
New & Used Games
New & Used cables, cords, and accessories
Toys & Figures

There is a list of product either on a waiting list or permanently out of stock; I may include this at a later point when I have more time. It's quite long.

Important notes (please read these before posting questions):

1) 99% of these deals will NOT work in a Game Crazy. They have their own deals; please refer to http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234882 These deals will also more than likely NOT work at a Hollywood Video with a Game Crazy attached! However, Movie Gallery may or may not have some of these same Game deals! "Movie Gallery bought Hollywood Video", hence the reason for some of the same sales at either HWV or MG.

2) Hollywood Video employees will need to scan a coupon code in order for any game to be discounted.

3) Hollywood Video's store hours vary from location to location, especially with all the store closings. Please call.

4) If you would like to contribute to any game deals, please when posting, include game, system, price, city and state.
For example:
Dragon Quest VIII, PS2, $4.99
Tampa, FL (Temple Terrace)

5) Hollywood Video's are mostly movie rental stores (games are not as important to them to keep up on), thus, always double check on sticker prices because 50% of the time they are probably stickered wrong. ;)

6) Do not trust the store locator at HollywoodVideo.com Google it and call first. That store might already be closed!

7) Hollywood Video does not do cash back if a game is damaged or you "already own it". Used games have a 90 day guarantee. You have a few options: swap for same title, swap for a different title if they do not have it, or using the disc buffer machine to try and fix the game. Hollywood Video also does disc buffing for personal items at a $1 per disc.

8) ALL sales are FINAL during the closing sale. Usually within the first few weeks of the sale if you do purchase something that does not work they MAY swap it for you. YMMV!!!

More than once lol. Ever since the the Thanksgiving sale I would go in and bring it up to the front.

So the Paso,CA store ended up getting their shipment of PV games today. 19 games on the now expired GS $20 promo were there....UGHH! If only a few days earlier...

Damn... That's painful. That's a 320 GB PS3 and a game... for $95...

I still really wish my local two HWV stores would've been allowed to convert some rentals to previously viewed, since they still have assloads of some of the $5 sale games on the rental shelves.

The first one I hit today still had a bunch of PS3 games including 3-8 copies of Devil May Cry 4, 3-6 copies of Motorstorm, 3-5 copies of Oblivion and a bunch of Madden 09's.

Aside from that though they had nothing I really wanted to keep or flip.

I was told by the manager at the first one I hit that my 'buddy'(ex buddy from PSN/CAG now apparently)had hit them up for a couple of games earlier. I didn't ask what he picked up, though it was probably the only really flippable titles.

It's a shame that this sale couldn't have lasted even longer, since the manager said he's still getting asked if he wants MORE games from closing HWV stores to sell.

I went back for the 3rd time, since it was ending today, got Army of Two, forza 2, Unreal Tourney for 360, and iron man for ps3

i also went in for a final check

animal crossing wii
super mario galaxy wii
super smash bro wii
cod 4 ps3
cod 5 ps3

all are holding up 34.99 and over

It was a great deal and thanks for the info super_dawn.
well, yeah, that kind of goes without saying ;).

But we'll see - we've been hearing about the demise of Blockbuster ever since I started on this site - and it's been 5+ years now. It does seem that HWV is closer to the edge though than BBV ever was (or is now).
None of the HWV is my city have closed yet, luckily. Alot of other businesses are going under and it's sad to see empty stores, some of which closed down over a year ago and are still empty. My local BBV closed at the end of 2008 and still is vacant.

Also I don't know if anybody else heard but a handful of Sam's Clubs are closing around the country.

Op is updated. ...I'm sure the sale will be brought back..although probably less and less successful since most coveted product has been purchased. All that can be hoped for is new titles dropping 29.99 and below or pulls from rentals. ....of course then there is the multitude of store closings.

:)

I think more stores will close before games will be $4.99 again. I went twice and didn't find a single game to purchase. So to me, the sale was dead a long time ago.

I'm going to be organizing a funeral for this $4.99 sale and i'll be inviting all CAGs to the reception that follows, RIP HWV 4.99 DEAL!

Now I won't have to step foot in a HWV for another 6+ months, and by that time they will all be gone anyway. It was good while it lasted.

It kinda sucks that the B1G1 is ONLY for last gen, since there's a few games for the PS3 I might still pick up a copy to actually keep that I was undecided on during the $5 sale and it'd make those games just a bit over $5 each with the B1G1.

Looks like the beginning of the end. Here is a story from the WSJ.

Movie Gallery, which also owns Hollywood Video, is reportedly eyeing the closure of nearly 40% of its 2,700 U.S. locations, the Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 14.
Citing sources familiar with the downsizing, the Journal said the Wilsonville, Ore.-based No. 2 DVD rental service, which is owned by Sopris Capital Advisors LLC and Aspen Advisors LLC, is trying to restructure operations as it labors with about $600 million in debt.
Gallery also is reportedly considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for a second time in two years. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2007 as a public entity after struggling to absorb nearly $1 billion in debt following an ill-conceived acquisition of Hollywood Video.
Gallery’s fiscal woes are not new. The chain, which has been reticent to discuss its problems, Dec. 15 hired restructuring firm Moelis & Co., which placed a 30-day grace period to negotiate terms with lenders and landlords.
Gallery reportedly has a $100 million senior secured revolver loan due 2011, a $600 million term loan, a $117 million second lien facility due 2012 and a $26 million letter of credit.
Movie Gallery in September said it would close 200 underperforming Gallery, in-store Game Crazy and Hollywood Video locations.
Gallery operates about 680 Game Crazy locations.
Representatives from Gallery and Moelis were not immediately available for comment.
Nonetheless, Gallery’s closures would represent another blow to brick-and-mortar video rental stores, which have come under attack by kiosk vendors offering new release rentals for $1 per day.
Blockbuster last year said it would close nearly 1,000 stores through this year. The No. 1 DVD rental service also is adding 10,000 Blockbuster Express kiosks this year with partner, NCR Corp., for a net gain of 9,000 consumer locations, CEO Jim Keyes reiterated in a recent investor call.

I'd miss the $4.99 deal too if even one of the 9 HWV stores within a 30 mile radius had it going on. The only deals were 80% of games in sleeves (PS2/Xbox) that came from debunk Gamecrazys. Unfortunately 96% of the games were sports titles. I did pick up some Xbox stuff that didn't suck to add to my collection but nothing too great.

Does the 2700 locations consist of Movie Gallery, HWV and GC stores or is that just MG?

On a side note you have to figure they've saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by never updating their printers over the years!
On a side note you have to figure they've saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by never updating their printers over the years!
Actually, while this seems like it would be true I bet things like ink, paper and maintenance cost way more than one would expect because of how difficult it must be to get that stuff. Big companies running outdated systems often cost more than updating because of scarcity of knowledge and equipment for those things.

LMAO! Yea you'd think that! ...I bet they'd save THOUSANDS of dollars if they'd stop making new signs for everything! Seriously...you guys don't understand...they constantly make new decorative signs for our previously viewed movie tables...we could just re-use the ones we have but no..lets just make new ones every time for our thousands of stores. ...i could probably go on and on about this. :)

thanks for the article 8bitlover! ...hm...so i'm pretty sure my store will close...i worked monday morning and from 10am to 2pm I had zero customers. yeaaa.....

Hilarious dude, and so true! I've been going to Movie Galleries many, many years, and have probably been in close to 100 different locations, and without fail, they've all always had those hideous old Model T dot matrix-printers.

it's alright...its about time. I thought we'd be dead last Christmas. ...yup, this will be my third closing store when it happens. I am reallly good at the liquidation sale process now! ;) ...although this time it might be a pack up the movies, ship out, and just lock the doors situation.

Damn, I hope you're looking for a job. I know the economy is bad right now. But you can't find anything if you don't look. I would have been looking when the 2nd store you were at started closing.

No worries here...hwv has been my second job for the past 2 yrs. I only work one day a week there.. if that. I think they've let me do that since i've been with them for over 5 yrs and I think I do my job pretty well.

I have a full time job elsewhere in which I actually just received a promotion. A nice surprise for the new year. So I'm very happy at my other job. :D

LOL you never know your store may be one of the busy ones ;).. The Hollywood Video that used to be open by me never had people in it.. I would go in at least once a week and never see anyone in there..

RIP $4.99 deal. On a side note, as a complete noob here but not a noob to the world of being a cheap ass, this lame HWV deal kept me coming back to this site enough that I caved and stopped lurking and became a member.

I work at a home for teenage boys who have had some difficulties in their lives and this deal allowed me to stock up on some $4.99 games for the Wii we had donated (Star Wars Unleashed, DBZ Tenkaichi 2, Sonic and the Secret Rings, MLB Power Pros, Metroid Prime 3). While I was there, I picked up several other good $4.99 deals for me - RE 5 (PS3), GH World Tour, Army of Two, Lego Indy Jones, NBA 2K9, Watchmen Parts 1&2, Prototype, Bioshock (360). If nothing else, it helped pad my collection for these wintry Cleveland days.

Thanks guys, and keep up the awesome work. Hope I will be able to contribute!

This is great to hear!!! I actually did the same thing back during the first $29.99 deal in May/June...I was a lurker for a couple months but since I couldn't hold back any longer in helping people with how hwv works, I had to sign up too. And I am so glad you were able to find some good stuff for your boys to play. :D

Well I received some shocking news today. I visited a HWV today on my lunch hour. The store is located on 15 Mile Rd in Clinton Twp, MI. I went to the table that holds all of the games that the closed Game Crazy that was attached to the store had, and saw that the 80% off sign was missing. I asked the clerk and was told that all of those games are now $4.99 each ! fuck, what a wasted trip.

The clerk was mad about it. She said they weren't moving much of those in the first place and now they raised the price on them. Has anyone else seen this happen at other stores, or is the store manager at that location an idiot?

That's where my family lives. I was born in MI.. :) ...I would have to assume this is one of the outlet locations which probably do their own sales that change. I wish I knew more than that...

Here's a great article though...lol

You know what's really interesting to me is the fact that between the HWV's that have already closed and the additional 1000 that they may now close, you have to think it would effectively negate the purchase MG made (of HWV) a few years ago. How many HWV's could have been in existence at the time of that purchase?

Ya, Movie Gallery certainly isn't run by the sharpest tools in the shed. But I can see what they thinking. A quick expansion into areas that they they were thin at, plus a small video game chain. Sadly, they got so far into debt, that they couldn't afford to make the changes needed to keep their customers.

It kills me, and I see it in other industries too, but you have a building full of MBA grads and they can't see any further than last week. What do they teach people in business school anyway?

You get to keep what ever you can sqeeze out of the workers/middle class/uninformed consumers/powerless (you pick).

advice - get/stay out of debt, drop you big bank (BofAss,Wells fuckers, CITI Bitch, etc and put your money in a credit union or at least a community bank and keep your money in your pocket or at least your communities instead of big bankers pockets....rant lol sorry

I heard the parent company of Hollywood Video is going to declare bankrupcy (again I think), and they plan to close 2/3rds of their stores. What do you think they will do with all their video game stock from these stores?

I would imagine if they just do the normal going out of business sale thing, then it will be pretty lame, cause usually they will start off with 10 percent off anything in the store, then 15 percent off, then 20 percent off, etc, etc.

When they were selling $29.99 for $4.99, that was like 80 percent off. It will take a very long time for them to get to 80 percent off, and by the time they do, nothing of any value whatsoever would be left. I'm hoping that maybe a few stores are closed before having this slow, drawn out g.o.o.b sale, and their game stock is simply transferred to other Hollywood Videos that aren't closing, and then maybe they do another $4.99 deal, and we can get some great scores again. Of course, mostly wishful thinking on my part.

The liquidation sales have certainly changed since I started going to them. Usually within the last couple of days you were able to grab games(new and used) for 80-90% off. Yet the most recent round of Blockbuster closings saw them stuck at 30-40%, even within the last week.

As for them transferring stuff from closing stores to ones staying open and then selling them for $4.99 for the $29.99 and under ones, it's wishful thinking since selling games for that low is only done to usually get people into the store and I doubt they really make money on those sales.

I really do not know what they are doing with the stock of games/movies anymore. My last two stores that I was at that closed we had a great liquidation sale...I made a killing working it since I, of course, horded a box of stuff till it was 90% off. I spent $60 ... you don't even wanna know what I got. ;) And during our liquidation sale we would occasionally get boxes of stuff from various game crazy's too. I really think our liquidation was a little better than blockbusters because we only had the sale for about a month before we closed (percent offs dropped each week)...and I've noticed my local blockbuster that closed, it took two months and percents did not drop that quickly.

....HOWEVER...this is not how hwv has been handling the closing of stores as of late. Now its been ...a store will find out a few days before they will be closing; they box everything up and send it to corporate. done. ...now this is me guessing, but I believe if they close all stores (which many think will happen by the end of 2010) that the game/movie stock will just be sold to a third party. At my last store I closed at, hwv had "hired" someone to buy anything that was left on the very last day of the liquidation sale. So thats my guess.

...Also, there are the clearance/discount stores already that some have brought up, but I don't know much about them unfortunately.

...but yea, maybe some of the game stock from stores that had there doors locked/closed will be transferred to still open hwv. ....I haven't seen any at my store tho.

My local stores got the inventory from three other closed locations during the 4.99 sale. It was awesome! Hopefully they keep doing it that way. From what one of the managers told me, she had to be assertive and ask for the transfers.
Whoa! I think I will go and use my remaining credit tomorrow...what a bummer for the employees.
Yup, I'm debating on using my credit now, or saving it in hopes of another 4.99 sale. Decisions decisions...
