Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven

I picked up the Final Fantasy I & II guide at CC for $1.58 but it wasn't easy. The cashier had trouble ringing it up, so he had to call his manager over to figure it out. The manager found the game in the computer's inventory for $1.58 but he said that the computer indicated that it was supposed to be sold with something else. He rang it up for me as an "open box" item but told the cashier to pull the rest of the guides from the shelf. Yeesh.

Also, Final Fantasy III's guide shows up in the guide wiki for EB Games (in fact it shows up four times), but its definitely still 16.99.

That's because it's probably for the OLDER guides for FF III for the other system(s) it was on before.

ARGH. Not much gets me angry, but why would someone do this?! It was clearly done with malicious intent, and that's just mean.

I've no idea. I never really bothered with the game. Although if there's a Prima and Nintendo guide like most Pokemon games, odds are the one I saw wasn't $0.01

CG, as Sixballer said, there are Nintendo and Prima versions. Plus there *may* be a DS and a GBA version of each publishing, but I'm not entirely certain.
No, Pokeon Ranger was a DS-only game, I believe. Mystery Dungeon was the one on GBA and DS.
Oh, duh.

Sorry, I've begun trying to clean out the wiki and wasn't thinking clearly about Gamers' question. Thanks for correcting me so quickly, sixers. =)

EDIT: You know, in going through this it looks as if someone took a print out of some stores game inventory history and copied all that product into the wiki. Which would go some way into answering why there are so many multiples and the truncated listings. A store like EBGS will pull up several listings for something like Age of Empires II. One will be new, one will be pre-owned, one may be a guide, one a hardcover, et cetera. Unfortunately, this still doesn't help in anyway to clean up this mess. Or answer why someone would do this in the first place.

Given the little bit of the wiki you quoted Guin, I can tell you that the "updated" screwing around is definitely a cut and paste from the old GS/EB penny list. The Ao&O is because someone scanned in the list and did text recognition, but instead of seeing AD&D, it saw AO&O. Anywho, that's obviously what the screwing around was. Someone trying to be a completist/helper who obviously felt it was necessary to put in guides that are more than 2 years old. Yeah... not helpful.

This is probably a dumb question, but a local Borders has had the Final Fantasy 7 and 8 Bradygames guides for a long time now (over a year, in fact). What are the chances they would ring up for $0.01 if I took them up to the cashier? Because I'll definitely go for them if I can get them at that price.

Zero. Bookstores know exactly what to do with .01 merchandise. It immediately gets pulled and destroyed. On the off chance that it was actually pennied it's pretty much a guarantee they wouldn't sell it to you.

If it's a guide that you're unlikely to find elsewhere, and I'm sure FF7 and FF8 guides fall into that category, I'd suggest picking them up while you can find them. Likely to be cheaper than any eBay price you'd pay.

Hey all thought I'd contribute the best I could to this thread. There will be a coupe of guides dropping to 0.01 tomorrow at Circuit City. I was checking for game drops early and found it they are:

Codes And Cheats Summer 2006
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion SKU: PRI 0761552766
Final Fantasy I & II Player's Guide

NCAA Football 2007
Perfect Dark Zero
Pokemon Colosseum

Not much But there might be something on here someone wants. I can probably grab all of these my store has if anyone wants to trade for them.

Actually, the one local Waldenbooks(Wilkes-Barre,PA) has had a FFVII book sitting there for forever. I had it pc'd one day, saying that I couldn't believe they had such an OLD book. It was STILL full price(matter of fact, I think it rang up for 2-3 cents OVER MSRP).

The chance of finding a pennied guide at a book store are slim to none imo.

And....a CC guide drop? Yeah right, I'm sure they'll all be pulled by the time the store opens in the morning. But hey, if I'm around that way later tomorrow, I may well check it out.

CC has blocked these guides from being able to be sold at all. They won't scan. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I'd be surprised, though I'm not.

Though, how exactly do they "block these guides from being able to be sold"? :whistle2:s Is there some message that comes up on the register like a "Do Not Sell" or something like that?

They include the UPC's as part of a group purchase. It's kind of complicated to explain but I checked it and, unfortunately, it's a no-go.

I dropped by my CC today. Didn't have any luck on those guides. I wasn't expecting to, but I thought I'd try. They had already pulled them. I also noticed that they had rearranged the games section and the guides were in new spot. I wish they could have just marked a few of those down like some of the other guides. I wouldn't mind paying $4 for an Oblivion guide.

This makes ALOT of sense....i've gone by a couple times to my local CC to price check the city of vilians/heros binders and they always come up as a "bundle" or "group" purchase and they never know the price. They always call some manager who says to sell it at the price on the UPC 24.95 which i laugh at as i walk out of the store. So these binders along with other penny guides just sit there and take up shelf space until some sucker comes along who will pay full retail on a 2 or 3 year old guide, rofl!!!

This is CC we're talking about. The current regime running things has no idea what they're doing. Just look at the (lack of) logic behind the recent firings. This is a guide thread so I digress. If anybody does happen to get any guides it's definitely YMMV.

Yeah I tried getting guides from a couple CC locations today, no luck. One manager wanted to pull them and wait until they "fixed it" and another wanted to sell me the guide for $10 under a generic SKU...

Today I went to Best Buy to buy some stuff. I stoped by the guides section to check it out and saw on the shelf price labeled God of War 2 for a penny. Needless to say I was suprised cause I havent heard anything from here. But above the label price there were a bunch of Viva Pinata guides, which was another suprise cause Ive never seen them before, didnt even know they existed. So I figured there must be a mistake and the Pinata are pennied out.

So I go get them price cheked and they both ring up reg price. But I figured since its labeled a penny I might be able to get them for that. So I go pay my stuff and tell the cashier about the penny deal. She goes to check it out and comes back with the story that yes its a penny but its a different guide because the sku #s dont match. This might be true but I think its BS cause Ive only seen one version of God of War 2. Does anybody know if there are more than 1 versions????Also the game section was very busy with employes marking some games down but I couldnt see evrything since they were just starting out.

Both the regular and LE God of War II guides are still regular price on the website.

Actually I don't see the Gears of War LE on the site though (just the regular). Did that one get pennied?

The first God of War has been pennied out for awhile, maybe that's what they had meant to label.

Both the God of War II & Viva Pinata guides are less than a month old, so there's no way they would be pennied out that fast.

Man, I wish they would've done that at my local BB because had they done that, I'd have taken the shelf tag and found a copy of BOTH the LE and reg GOW II guides and checked the UPC #'s on the tag with the back of the guide.

And, if either matched, I'd be getting that damned guide for .01.

That's one way to check to see which guide(s), if any, are pennied. That is, if your local BB puts .01 tags on the shelf.

One of the great things I learned in my time as a retail worker.

The Viva Pinata guide has been out less than a week and GoW2 barely a month. No fucking way would they be pennied out yet! The shelf labels clearly state what they are for. So it doesn't matter if Viva Pinata or GoW2 guides happened to be sitting there if the shelf tag was for something like Yoshi's Island.

Ah, I see. So games aren't usually pennied out online, like Godfather was?

The one I got checked was the regular one. I didnt know there was a LE version. Somebody might wanna go price check that at their BB since they dont have one at mine. Maybe thats the one pennied out??

Went to a TRU today and found Half Life 2 and Ghost Recon guide. Went to go pay and the lady wouldn't sell it to me, said she had to send it back. I think she was just being a ***** though, cuz I've had luck at that TRU. She was watching me the whole time I was in the store. I'm going to go back next week, they had a couple Half Life's there, hopefully they still are.

When they're pennied, they're pulled from the site completly, hence me posting the links to the guides. Trust me, it works.

Though on occasion, some guides might reappear on the site after being pennied.

Sorry for the double post, but Mortal Kombat, Lego Star Wars II, Need For Speed, and Scarface were removed from the site.

Carry on.

You'd be quite surprised actually, as some guides( though usually for PC games) have pennied out within a month of coming out. At least one example I can think of right now is Mage Knight Apocalypse. That guide at least seemed to drop QUICK.

Oh and I snagged a copy each of the Reservoir Dogs and Pirates Of The Caribbean:The Legend Of Jack Sparrow guides yesterday. Just wanted to clarify WHICH POTC guide was pennied for those who may actually want it.
where did you get the guides from man, eb/gs i assume? Thats the only store I can recall that carries those 2 guides.
Yeah, PotC, Res Dogs, and Chromehounds were recently pennied at GS. That's all we've heard of though.
