Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven

Yeah there was definitely a drop as i snagged em all. If you can take a peak today and try to pull up a list it would be great Vahn.

Are you able to go into system and look for guides marked at $.01?
This one shouldn't be to hard to find guides I'm guessing if you got the chance to go out yesterday, or can even go out today maybe. Because like I said, I checked in the mid-afternoon yesterday and there was no notice at all. I asked my friend in the media department who always pulls the guides right away just so I can get a crack at them, and he said he saw nothing, but of course people are reporting a drop. So I'll look into it today again and let everybody know if i see anything.
This is why I wish BB had price scanners like Target does. Would make this process so much easier to deal with if I could check prices on guides without bugging a cashier or store rep.

Lol shrike. The people there know me as the guide guy and half the time they will let me use one of their computers to check the prices on a stack of guides.

yea, i'm able to do that.

I got to the checkout w/ 3 guides and the b**** did an 'incorrect price' override and marked them back up to $19.99. I left in disgust. Ah well.

Got one Crackdown, SC Double Agent, Def jam Icon, R6 Vegas and Sonic for myself.

I tried to get Rogue Galaxy with the coupon and they denied me. I am going to try again today I am going back to get Afro Samuari during lunch.

Plus I know people that work during the day. I went after work yesterday.

I scored a bunch of penny guides at BB over the weekend. They were even marked at a penny. A guy working there pointed them out to me and said "take as many as you like, we just want them out." I got Sims, lego Star wars, Yoshi Island DS (both versions), Madden Head Coach,Madden 06, some pc guides, and a Need for Speed carbon guide. Also got two Tony Hawk dvds.

Did they say why? I used coupon on mine and it didnt work, scanned but price wasn't taken off but i'm curious as to WHY they shot you down.

Eugaet sadly not much else you can do. What I find helpful is just mention BEFORE they scan them that you believe these are clearanced. I've had a few cashiers look suspicious and i just shrug and say they haven't sold and they need the space. Cheaper to mark em at a penny and get rid of em then have em taking up space for other guides.

Hmmm, different experience for me this month. Went to two locations, the first at about 10:45 and found the titles first posted. Same cashier from last drop, was great and I had her check WW Animal but still $14.99.. no biggie... came home to discover Crackdown and Sonic...called another location, new but low volume and asked about Harvest Moon...drove there for moon (now it's about 2 p.m. and could not find one guide...took a chance and asked a young man I remember from the Big clearance sale who was very nice...he stated they were cracking down and had pulled them before opening...another member joined our conversation and said they were in the back and probably already destroyed..so I asked if they would check and may I please have one of each if still intact (crackdown/Sonic) he brought one of each out but would not allow any additional...we both shared sentiments of how much a waste it was to discard them and how each of us had actually bought the game corresponding to a found penny guide in the past...So I leave that store and drive all the way to store #1 as I saw at least 2 crackdowns earlier...arrive late afternoon and sadly the area is wiped out...I find one more Harvest Moon (first store limited to using one coupon) and ask a gal I speak to in Media if they pulled the guides to the back...and if so, may I have them before they are discarded...I only ask for crackdown and sonic, she knows exactly where they are and brings a lil stack out...off the the register I go...but to note, this store has not pulled any penny guides in the last three months...I leave extras and see them a week later...
so, here they are cracking down but arriving on the "pull" day allowed me to rescue them from the back.

I managed to get a few guides yesterday, around noon. I was curious about Crackdown, so I brought a copy up to the checkout, and it rang up for a penny. I basically ran back to get a couple more for trading, and the BB employee was already there with a shopping cart unloading the penny guides from the shelf. I asked her if they could still sell them, and she said no. She asked me if there were any in particular that I was looking for, and I said "Yeah, I wanted a copy of Crackdown." She told me "Sorry, we can't sell them."

The lesson learned here is that if you want multiple copies of guides but aren't sure if they've been pennied, bring up a few copies of each guide to get them scanned. If they ring up for a penny, then you've saved yourself a trip back to the rack, and avoided having a face-off with a BB employee who's feverishly pulling the guides as fast as she possibly can.

Well, some sort of memo had to hit at least some of the BB's because the first two I went to yesterday had already pulled all the pennied guides sometime just after opening as I was there by 11AM. There were only holes left on the shelves where the guides had been just a couple days before.
Do you guys suggest using the $5 off coupon for Rogue Galaxy, rather than waiting for it to penny out?
Since it is a RPG guide, $5 isnt too bad
Do you guys suggest using the $5 off coupon for Rogue Galaxy, rather than waiting for it to penny out?
Yes. Anything made by double jump really never drops down much. It's possible you might find it for $.01 but most likely they will be sold out way before they hit $.01

Picked up extras of Splinter Cell: double agent and Def Icon Jam guides available for trade. Still looking for crackdown and Rainbow Six Vegas guide. PM if interested.
Got one each of R6:Vegas, SC: DA & DJ:Icon.
I made the trip to my local bb yesterday... cleaned out. really depressing because CC and EB GAmes had like 5 of each for like $15 a piece more. :(
Yes. Anything made by double jump really never drops down much. It's possible you might find it for $.01 but most likely they will be sold out way before they hit $.01
Or they'll be snatched up by the employees when it pennies out.

Went back today to see if my 'insider' was there...he was, but he didn't have any good news. The guides that were in the back last night have already been removed to the warehouse, the dumpster, game guide heaven, whatever. His supervisor had told him they couldn't sell them at $0.01 because it hurts their margins (I'm currently trying to figure out how trashing them wouldn't have the same effect)...he was also barred from grabbing them for himself anymore. It was just last week he told me that they keep them in the back for a week in case the employees want to pick it up for $0.01, after that they're trashed. Again, oh well.

So it looks like my tactic now is this: Any guide that might possibly be pennied soon that I'm interested in, hide. Come back on penny day to retrieve hopefully-still-hidden guide. And hopefully get a clueless cashier. Outside of this, I'm pretty much shut down in Tulsa as far as guides...well, at BB anyhow. I still can't bring myself to actually go dumpster diving, but I consider it more and more every day.

Throwing away perfectly good books, what a waste...

How are people "hiding" these guides? Don't the stores have cameras that record suspicious behavior? It seems like the employees would see all this stashing going on, and then just go directly to the hiding spots later and put the items back on the original shelves.

That's why I wouldn't do any type of guide hiding. Too many chances you'll be picked up as a potential shoplifter and get kicked out of the store.

I could probably just move some of the guides to the PC section and put them out in plain sight. The same store I posted about ^^^ above hardly ever does anything to the guides there. They still have pennied guides on the shelf that dropped 3rd quarter last year...

My store only has one section of guides... three shelves tall. Meh.

I actually can't even find their PC games section to see if any guides are stashed there.

I suppose that doing this, or hiding guides behind the games would be less obvious than hiding the guides in a freezer or microwave.:)

Probably be less of a WTF? moment with the LP folks @ BB.

I think it's because the Media staff doesn't mess with the PC stuff? I've never once had any Best Buy pull the PC guides, however they always pull the game ones.

Explains the NBA 2005 guide thats still there
I think it's because the Media staff doesn't mess with the PC stuff? I've never once had any Best Buy pull the PC guides, however they always pull the game ones.
They are different groups within the store with different areas of responsibility. It probably would be a good way to put guides in plain sight without them disappearing.

That is assuming they're not guides that would work for both PC's and consoles.
i tried the pc section but the next time i visited they are moved pack to the video game area
You mean you don't go back every day to check and move them back to the PC section if necessary? Good gravy, man, where are your priorities? ;)

At my store, the PC section has become the dumping ground for extra console games they don't have the room for in the media section. Lots of DS, PSP, and GBA games...some XB, PS2, and GC. Not too difficult to hide stuff in plain sight...it's a mess.

I've tried hiding console guides in the PC guide section, and every single time all said guides are returned to their rightful place.

With that said, I'm still for hiding guides. There's nothing illegal with it since it's not defined as shoplifting; the merchandise is still in the store. And at my particular store, guides NEVER move (unless they have children's appeal like Pokemon, Spectrobes, etc.) until they're pennied out. Not one Saint's Row or Rainbow Six Vegas guide moved until they were pennied.

Half the time, my locations are discovered but I've been lucky with my FFIII and AC: WW guides thus far. My favorite place is in the appliance section since it's become apparant that many of those appliances never move and the only times customers (and associates!) go into this area are when they're lost at my Best Buy. But, YMMV.

I ignored it yesterday, but the number of game guides on the BB site went from 43 to 44...figured they added one. Looks like they added 3, removed 2. The following weren't on the site as of yesterday.

8293161 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
8364192 Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Just a heads up. And I know VCS was pennied back in Jan...is this a diff version? Crap, I may have to head back out, was just there during lunch...although I'm going to have to limit myself to game guides I actually want/need, it's getting to be too much hassle. I don't want/need either of those two guides. But the allure of the penny guide is damn near irrestible.

Ha! I can just imagine the random employee taking a wrong turn at the ovens and gazing in wonder at the floor-to-ceiling gas ranges. "Whoa, what is this place?!"

It IS a different version that came out after the PS2 version of the game was released and is not pennied.
It IS a different version that came out after the PS2 version of the game was released and is not pennied.
Not pennied yet. All 5 titles that were pennied yesterday were removed from the website the prior week. And they've followed the same pattern before. So these stand a good chance of being pennied next Monday. I'm just giving a heads-up since the heads-up last week panned out.

Quick, everyone run to BB and fill as many washing machines with these guides as you can!

Being as BB generally only pennies once a month, I'd say there's a better chance the next round of pennied guides come about this time next month. Seems they have switched from their usual first Monday of the month guide drop day....plus next Monday's still May anyway.

The PS2 VCS guide has small-as-hell text on the bottom noting it is the PS2 version. Never would've seen it if I wasn't specifically looking for it.

it is possible for VCS, but Tomb Raider: Anniversary isnt even out yet.
it is possible for VCS, but Tomb Raider: Anniversary isnt even out yet.
True, for some reason I thought it was a guide for an older version, wasn't paying attention. I'll doublecheck next time before I post...so just keep an eye on the newer VCS then.

I tried BOTH of my local BB's this morning and afternoon and NO GO. Hell, the one media employee who knows me as 'the other guide guy' said he got an email saying to pull them from HIS manager, who he said likes dumping HER responsibilities on him.

Oh well, as I said before, no big loss, since I didn't personally want any from this drop. Plus, I'm also going to a historic area next week sometime for an overnight trip and there's about 6-8 GS's and about 3-4 BB's in the same area......I NEED to replenish those dreck guides I'm stuck with for the most part you know.

Oh and about hiding those guides in plain sight, I did that with the one Oblivion guide a while back. And, I just remembered about it 2-3 weeks ago when I went to check for the last drops guides and BAM, there it is, still sitting on the lowest shelf that I had placed it on.

You know the one in the PC section thats ALL the way at the bottom and NO ONE ever looks at. I tried stashing another copy BEHIND said shelf, but sadly, it fell over and is laying flat on the floor UNDER that shelf now.

Me thinks if they ever move around the shelving in the PC game section, they're in for an unusual find if they do that like 10 years from now.

Went to four of the five Richmond Best Buys. Only one had anything, and the other three were stripped clean. Unfortunately, the one store that had the hardbound Pokedex was cleaned out. That was the only guide I really want, as in want enough that I might buy it for full price from Amazon (if I can't swing a deal on here, that is ;) )

I got three each of Crackdown, Def Jam: Icon, Sonic, and Splinter Cell: DA, so away they go to the list.
Quick, everyone run to BB and fill as many washing machines with these guides as you can!
 I would love to see your reaction when you get confronted by a BB employee who catches you in the act!

BB Employee: "Um, sir? What exactly do you think you're doing?"

eugaet: "Well, I thought these guides looked a little dirty..."

BB Employee: "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
 I would love to see your reaction when you get confronted by a BB employee who catches you in the act!
I should wear one of my BB Devil Customer shirts. LINK

Yeah, I put that design up not long after a BB exec was quoted as calling a certain percentage of it's customers 'devils', a few years ago. I did it just for fun...I need to take those down...or at least mark the price down so I don't make a profit. Not that any have sold, I forgot about them until just now.

At first it looked exactly like the BB logo, but I had to change it because it was too similar. I'm going to go modify the prices real quick so you guys don't think I'm trying to shill some crap here...I just wanted to share the design.

Edit: Shirt prices changed to zero markup. I never got around to ordering one of these for myself, which was the actual plan...I'll have to do something about that...

Picked up the Rogue Galaxy guide for $5 after coupon. The guy had to manually adjust it, as others have mentioned. I don't even have this game, but I plan to get it eventually and I wanted to make sure I had a guide. Plus, it's from Double Jump, which I like.

Went to all three BB in my area....as for the last 3 drops they had all been stripped clean. This is pissing me off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Start stashing guides if there are ones you really want. I believe all the pennied guides this drop were removed from the site last Tuesday-ish. I was thinking about stashing some guides but there weren't any of them I really really needed.
