Reduced Price Guides-Discussion Thread

I think alot of clutter in the main thread comes from people complaining about clutter and then that generates a bunch of additional clutter.

People posting about what guides they scored and potential drops is good to read.

Having three threads seems excessive and time consuming to manage. I think the trade thread and just the main thread are sufficient.

But doesn't there have to be clutter in the first place in order to complain about it?? This is a good thread for people to talk about their scores and neat stories about their experiences about buying guides. Those sorts of things should be kept out of the main guide thread. I mean, there is a POINT to the "bragging rights" threads, right?

I mean, it's "great" seeing 15 people IN A ROW talk about what they bought today at Best Buy, but do I really care? And if you do care, then fine, you can come to THIS thread to read all about it. I'll support whatever the CAG mods decide on, but the clutter does have to be managed one way or another.

The worthless posts about people's scores gets out-of-hand way too often.
Discuss in here what you prefer, having a cluttered main Guide thread or not. No promises, but I like to hear both sides.
I'll admit I've made posts before which have blown up the proportions of some other threads, but since I'm trying to call for a crackdown on such posts in a thread I maintain I've been trying to go back and find all of the off topic posts I have made in numerous threads and delete them. I would be little more than a hypocrite if I didn't try to eliminate them.

I'd actually like to hear from Cheapy or one of his tech people about which thing puts more of a strain on the server(s), since I know a while back there was a movement to cap threads at 1500 or so posts so they don't get bloated. Some threads are well above that by now, but if the tons of thinly veiled trade posts were removed from them, I feel that they would become ALOT less cluttered as well.

I'd like to see 'score' posts moved here if they appear in the main thread or those same posts limited to ONE per CAG and have them simply edited by each CAG who posts one whenever each new drop occurs.

While some may say that 'hoarders' got to their store(s) and grabbed everything, I say that it may well have been the employees who pulled them like they're supposed to. You have to remember that if employees did their jobs properly, NONE of us would EVER find a guide on the shelf that pennied. I personally think that it may be employees pulling and dumpstering them or whatever that may be the problem and not some 'hoarder'.

Believe me, I learned firsthand as to how flooded the market gets the day of or the day after a drop and the hoarders would soon realize that the post office or whoever would be making the MOST money on the deal and stop in short order. It also helps that if you want a guide that dropped, you should get there as soon as possible on the day we find out about the drop.

Of course, the multiple 'did anything drop' and 'score' posts may impede that from happening, so that in itself gives more fuel to the 'uncluttered' thread argument. It makes it harder for those of us trying to simply grab ONE copy of each for ourselves or trading purposes.

In closing, I would like to once again ask Cheapy and his tech people to chime in on this as to what puts MORE strain on the server(s), since we definitely don't want ANOTHER CAG crash to occur.

I personally don't mind the chatting and banter. If it is limited to "I found X, Y, and Z" that's fine. Just so long as people don't constantly post "hey, I found these a while ago, anyone want em?".

QFT. I was wondering when the employees are supposed to pull the guides - the monday they drop? So it's almost imperative to hit up the store as soon as it opens else the guides go in the trash. My closest BB has about a dozen Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn guides that I know are heading towards the trash or some other fate as soon as they're dropped. (They're impeccable about pulling penny guides).

Stopped by TRU for some more clearance goodness :) and was chatting with the guy about penny guides. He says the minute he pulls them, they're either RTV'd (return to vendor) or shredded :bomb:. He also said that if I can get in before his manager does, that I could have 'em. :D

As tempting as the idea is to resell the penny guides on ebay, they don't really go for much (if anything at all). The fact is, if someone wants a guide, they'd go out and buy it already.

I can't stress this enough: networking and a good attitude will do you loads more good than arguing about prices and hoarding ever will.

About the only area I ever saw guides actually MARKED for .01 on the shelf was at some Best Buy stores out in FAR northern NJ a long, long time ago. Otherwise, I've found that the ones around here yank them post haste and some people who work at the stores will even go so far as to give a smarmy 'we destroyed them all already' when/if you ask about 1-2 in particular.

Toys R Us is a crapshoot around here, where if you find ONE guide that they missed, you may or may not get it for that price, but most times they pull them before the store opens(happens that way at most every store that pennies them).

As for Gamestop, well......I seriously pissed off the local DM a long time ago and he put a serious crackdown in place that has held to this day. I still find the occasional guide, which they don't even ring up, they just ring it out of the system and then hand it to me and say 'this is free' and let me walk out with it.

It may well be different depending on where you are in the country, but I think aside from some areas even Best Buy is cracking down on these things lately.
All I care is about those FE Guides, and apparently my BB shows mercy and doesn't throw out guides.
You're in NYC, right? Do you go to the BB on 86th and Lex? Just wondering because it'd save me a trip up there if you're going to take the guides anyway.

They have been pennied, right? And yes I go there, and if you want I can give you a few copies if you want(to save you a trip;)).

I went to a GS today and pretended that I had heard from a friend online that the SMG Hardcover had been clearanced to $5 (was hoping when it rang up at a penny I could just act like, oh wow! Even better!) They didn't have any Hardcovers though. I checked the regular just in case I had forgotten which was pennied, but of course it's $10 like it's stickered. I was surprised when I asked for the SMG guide and the guy said, "Yah there's this one, and, oh it looks like the Hardcover one is sold out". Probably got trashed this morning and the night crew knew nothing of it. If only they had missed it.

Another store was closed (it closed at 8 and I thought 9, like most others), and the third apparently has no guide rack. I'll try again tomorrow at the closed store. I guess I'll go throw this in the guide discussion thread :p (copy>>find thread>>paste...)

SMG hardcovers have been pennied? Sweet!
My friend finally got the dark sectors but PES still rings up as $9.99. WTF?
Also, if my friend brings the receipt for dark sector to CC, will they price match it?

Getting CC to PM a penny guide is a HUUUUUUUGE YMMV. I somehow managed to swing a PM on a copy of the God Of War II regular edition guide, but I went back a second time to try and PM again and I was shot down.

Question: Generally speaking, what will a guide show up as on the "Customer Kiosk" computers at BestBuy, if it's pennied? Will it just not show at all? I went to one today, and all the CE Phantom Hourglass guides were gone (except one misplaced one), and it said backordered, on the computer, but still rang up for a penny.

On the other hand, the Army of TWO guides wasn't even in the system, but there are still a ton of them there, and that game is fairly new.

Kabuki, I've never been able to find any penny guide show up on BB kiosk. But then, some of you guys have found some of their penny drops on their internet site, and I've never seen that either. So my input is probably worth less than the going price of a penny guide.

Heavenly Sword and quite a few others SHOULD show up on the customer kiosks in ANY Best Buy store and they SHOULD show up as .01 too. But, you have to look at the top of the page to see if it says that the site will advertise the LOWEST selling price or something to that effect.

It's in a bright YELLOW section towards the top of the page, but if you see that then the guides that pennied that're still on the in-store kiosks SHOULD come up as .01. Although, there are some exceptions to that rule, though I don't recall any of them offhand.

I had a great day in a different city that I usually never visit. First, to BB:

Saw a couple guides I knew were pennied but wasn't sure (for some reason I thought "I won't need a list, I know all the stuff I need from there, mostly FF stuff).

So, I see a bunch of Super Paper Mario, a couple other things, mostly stuff I don't need, AND two FFXII: RW. Was pretty sure that pennied, so I grabbed them both.
Told checkout girl that I had heard from a friend they were on clearance; of course she was still confused by the 1 cent ringup. Other guy messed with it a bit and finally said okay; he even PAID for them since i had no change (just Credit Card; I always forget change!) I came right back with a quarter for him cause he was so cool about it.

Then, to cc:
They had a TON of guides (but no Rogue Galaxy, the only one I really wanted). Girl at counter was surprised at price, other lady said "this is the only CC I know of that doesn't mark clearance items". I was bursting inside. This was working.
Then Phantom Hourglass and LSW:CS wouldn't ring up. I realized I needed change (again! Seriously?) and ran out to get a quarter. When I got back, they were all rung up, and I said keep the change. Is fifty cents for guides too much for a CAG? :p

Here's my haul:
BB
Super Paper Mario (wii, NP) x2
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings (DS) x2
CC
Tomb Raider Anniversary (prima)
Ultimate National Pokedex (Diamond/Pearl, NP)
Yoshi's Island DS (NP)
Viva Pinata (prima)
Metroid Prime 3: Corruprion (prima)
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (prima)
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Blue Softcover Premiere Ed., Prima)

Stopped by one of the gamestops here in town (not going to say which one too many Vegas CAG's I'm learning) and they had 4 SEALED FFXII LE guides. They were marked at $19.99, which I almost got one.

Hasn't FFXII been around long enough for the guides to begin penny-ing out? I'll be watching that store like a HAWK.

That's NOTHING. A couple of my local GS stores have like 12-20 copies of the damn thing. They have them stacked up in every which way and they take up more than half of the guide shelf in each store they're in.

The age of a guide is really not a factor when dealing with RPG guides. The original FFX guides was full price for years.

True. Even now they have a DVD-less God Of War guide on the shelves for $12.99. Luckily, I bought the original version WITH the DVD version of the guide, even though I paid full price for it.

Hmmm, I might just have to go back and get one JIC (just in case). Thanks guys.
Anyone else's Circuit City stop carrying guides altogether?
Mine still has them.

I went to pick up a few penny guides yesterday. As the cashier scanned them, she kept typing something in afterwards. I asked her if there was a problem and she said that they were still ringing up as if they were "on discount." She explained how CC sometimes has deals where you get the guide for free if you buy the game and all of my guides (the confirmed pennied) were "kind of still ringing up like that." So, she was OVERRIDING all of them to make them cover price. I thought wtf, so I told her I'd be back later to buy them since it was taking a while. She said she'd put them behind the counter for me.

I went back today and a different cashier was there. She rang me up and the total came to 6 cents.

Lol. I did go back to buy them... :whistle2:# much, much later... :whistle2:# and not from her.

6 pennies for your thoughts, GwO.

edit: Just realized, maybe you thought I was calling you a liar, lol. Nope. I believed you, I meant your response to the cashier. This joke was not done well, I'm afraid.

Nah, it's cool. I knew it was a joke, that's why I put the :whistle2:# and penny for your thoughts thing. And, it really did make me "lol" because heck yeah, I did lie to that bitchy cashier. I've seen her before and she likes to let out a SIGHHH when I'm trying to price adjust.

But, now you're making me want to go back in the thread and check for that similar situation. I hope I didn't miss a glitter opportunity. ;)

Figured I couldn't post this in the "Strategy Guide - Buy, Sell, Trade" forum, so I will post it here:

If you get a guide trade request PM, it would be great if you could kindly respond to the requestor, even if it's not a trade you want to make. It is just a courteous and polite thing to do instead of ignoring the request. Ignoring an unwanted trade request reminds me of when I was younger and immature and I used to ignore girlfriends until they realized I didn't want to go out anymore, because I didn't want the confrontation.

Okay, I have to brag. I decided to put my Silent Hill 1, 2, 3, & 4 guides on ebay. Starting price: $9.99. Ending price $212.50! Talk about insane! Not bad for 4 guides I paid nothing for (they were given to me). I used part of the proceeds to buy my mom the limited edition Pokemon DS Lite :D.

I don't know if this is the thread to discuss is, but I found a store here in town that will take the penny guides as credit and apply it towards the books in the store. The catch is that when you buy the book the owner takes half credit (from the trade-in), half cash/debit. That's alright :) I ended up with like $48.xx of credit and got these gems:

The Art of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within (hardback Bradygames book with SHINY wrap)
Official Super Game Boy guide (Nintendo - why would they make such a guide? ;P)
Game Boy guide (Nintendo)
King's Field Unauthorized guide (Prima - wouldn't have picked up this one had it not been for Vinny's RPG guide thread.)

There's a few older ones that I'm thinking about picking up, but we'll see.

I admit, I've done the 'ignore a PM' thing before, though it was usually some insane lowball offer which had me sending out a pack of guides at my cost and losing $$$$ on it. Unfortunately, just recently someone offered me a SNES and a copy of Rogue Galaxy for like $30 shipped and I meant to get back to them, but I went crazy deleting old PM's and deleted their PM's about the deal.

As far as the Silent Hill guides go, I wonder what JUST the original one goes for, since I kept that even though I got rid of the original game when I dumped my prior gen game collection.

I can understand that. There's been a few people who have something I want and I have something they want that's of EQUAL value and I've been ignored. That's what I can't figure out. It doesn't make sense. It's a win-win trade, but I guess they're holding out for a better deal and make someone else lose their shirt.

I've seen people's trade lists who are asking for rare RPG guides, for example, but only have penny guides to offer. That's ludicrous and almost offends me.

But I just get frustrated getting ignored. It would literally take 10 seconds to respond to a PM with "thanks, but I'm not interested. Appreciate the message".

Back before I truly knew what guides were 'worth', I had a buttload of more current RPG guides on my TL and I let them go for alot less than a few turned out to be worth(I think). So anymore, I research guides before I put them on my TL and it's impossible to pry the guides I have only one of from my TL lately.

I just wish I could remember who offered me Rogue Galaxy(the game) and a Super NES for $30 shipped, since it was a pretty good deal looking back on it now. But I got overzealous n deleted their PM's with the backlog of PM's I had in my inbox.

My bet is the Silent Hill 1 guide was what made the money for me. The other 3 just a helped a bit. You could probably make a bit of money if you sold it.

Almost got shot down at CC. Normally you have to go to the customer service desk to checkout but they had a register open today in the normal area. When Rockband rings up for $0.01, he goes to ask the manager if they can sell it. Thankfully she allowed it. For some reason I feel more comfortable going to BB I guess because they don't seem as suspicious about it (even though I didn't do anything wrong of course)

And yet today my BB proved to be the more problematic place to get the guides from today. I got shot down on:

2x Burnout Paradise
2x Condemned 2

This was at Best Buy, which is usually like my goldmine store around here. Yet at CC, they even brought out one of the DMC 4 guides they had just pulled and sold it to me for .01 with a copy of the Madden 08 guide.

Went to gamecrazy. Picked up 2 penny guides as well as a Rogue Galaxy guide and some 4/$10 games (Wild Arms 3, Dark Cloud, Dr Muto, and Timesplitters) for $27.

I forgot my 20% off coupon and I told the guy I have never bought from them before.

He tried to sell me a MVP card for $10. He said the (penny) guides were 7.99 each, but he could give them to me at a penny if I buy an MVP card. He then offers to give me 20% the rogue galaxy guide that is "usually only valid if you buy the game." I tell him I only want the games and the rogue galaxy guide and then he says "Well, I will give you the other guides for a penny because the computer isn't letting me take them off." I said "Ok" and he says "$37 is your total". I said "does that have the MVP card on it?" He says "yeah" and I tell him to take it off...What a scammer. Hopefully Rogue Galaxy was not pennied out there. I know it was pennied at CC, but for a mint guide I thought 20% off was worth it.

I had the one set of employees at the one Gamestop try selling me an Edge card/subscript without letting me know about it, when I was only buying maybe 1-3 of the 75% off PS1 titles.

My total should've been something really low like $2.25 or something, but it was nearly $20.

I asked them how it got that high, they told me that I had just told them I wanted the Edge card.

I'm like 'no I didn't, take it off the bill and shove it up your ass'. Then I walked out without anything.

Needless to say, they were fired about 2 weeks later. I guess they tried the same with too many other people.

that happened to me before. Brought up a pennied guide and the guy said I will get a free edge card when I buy the guide. I said no thanks and walk out

I'm sure if some normal consumers do that at really lax GS stores where they forget to pull guides for 3-6 months, they think 'that's a deal' and go along with it.

Looking up the term 'cheap games' back in 2005 when I joined CAG was the best misdirected web search I've ever done. This site has saved me from paying $15-20 for tons of guides.
