Saint's Row: The Third- Strap it On 11/15/11

Game does look pretty fun. I admit, I had absolutely no interest in this, but I think I will pick this up soon. I probably won't Day 1 since I just got Skyrim, but will in a few weeks.

WHY ISN'T THIS MORE POPULAR?!

:|

Looks great. Still only cautiously optimistic though, as THQ has REALLY been trying hard to screw everything up, lately. Armageddon is a prime example, and now all of the DLC at release for Saints Row 3 (though, in all honesty, it's pretty minor... and the cheats DLC is entirely unlockable in-game).

I skipped Skyrim to get it, too, though I'll probably get Skyrim later this week. I just wish I had a PS3 to play with my brother.

I'm debating whether or not to pick it up at midnight, or just wait until tomorrow. I am dying to play it, but I'm not much of a late-nighter anymore. I'd probably play for 30 minutes and fall asleep. It sucks being old. :(

I'm very cautious. Will pick it up and test it out, obviously, but I'm hoping this can exceed what SR2 did. IMO SR2 had some great ideas but was just not well done at all. We'll have to see about this, I have solid hopes for it though, it looks entertaining.

Being old is awesome. You get to yell at kids to get off your lawn and get arthritis!

I was hoping I'd be able to grab it on my way home from work this morning, but no such luck. Ah well, 4 more hours until I can finally start terrorizing Steelport. :twoguns:

I have it reserved at GS, since I had a ton of leftover credit. I ended up not going because right about 11pm, those storms moved into the area and I wasn't waiting in the rain for the game. I'll go out later this morning and pick it up.

For some reason Amazon decided my release day delivery would be tomorrow...

Anyway can't wait, I saw the trailer that had the guys singing sublime.. hilarious

Someone made a really great looking Joker on the community site. I started playing as him, pretty cool.

Looks a lot better in game, and the facial features are so dead on.

Yeah, that Joker looks pretty sweet. I wish I was better at the character creation stuff; I tried to make my character a hot chick, but she ended up looking.... well, "mutant" might be too strong a word, but only just slightly.

Most of us just got done playing Arkham City, so why we want to play as Joker is beyond me. Don't you guys ever get sick and tired of Batman?

After a couple hours, I'm a little disappointed. Doesn't feel more over the top than SR2. Where is all the side content like the Fuzz, Septic Avenger, Demolition Derby, etc? Did they get ride of Paramedic and Fire Truck activities? I got into an ambulance and there was no option for it.

I made the Crow.

Also, I don't like this game that much. It's nowhere near as fun as SR2, the island is smaller, it feels lifeless, I also couldn't find the paramedic/fire truck/police activities, insurance fraud only has three or four levels (compared to SR's 8) and is completely broken (if you jump and hit a car then keep holding up, you glide up and over the car and hit the one behind it.. rinse and repeat).

It's glitched twice on me (once in the options menu - adjusted the music volume and it got stuck on the sample loop, had to restart the mission, then once when you were in the helicopter shooting down. All of my target icons disappeared but they kept coming. Restarted the mission and it worked the second tiem). I'll keep playing because it's Saint's Row.. but I'm pretty disappointed.

do the vehicles control better in this one? SR2 felt unrealistic and handled like it was simpsons road rage. If vehicles are more like gta's I'd totally get this game.
Ha Ha, am I the only one who sat in the car listening to them sing to Sublime?
I Did...

I've put little over two hours into it so far and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I Like how running you do different melee attacks or can tackle someone and use them as a human shield.

The control is even more over the top than SR2, IMO. There's even a drift button.

Speaking of which, why can't we remap the controls? I hate the layout, I don't understand why they had to change it around.

Well, after a few hours of gameplay, I'm really liking it. What I like:

 • The Mission system, having it all on your phone.
 • The GPS/waypoint system. Having it more like a racer, with arrows point at which roads to turn on. So much better than having to rely on the minimap.
 • Some of the weapons; the Drones are fun, as are a few others.
 • Melee combat has been overhauled for the better.
 • The music soundtrack is vastly improved, with far more well-known classics (Social D's "Ball & Chain" and Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina" come to mind, amongst many others, versus the lesser know, more Emo soundtrack of SR2 (Aside from "The Final Countdown" and "Africa," of course).
Things I'm disappointed by:

 • It seems like characters are less customizable this time around. Body types, especially. It's like your only real options are ripped, or fat and ripped. And where is the transexual gender from SR2?
 • Clothing. No more mixing and matching overshirts and undershirts.
 • Distraction activities seem short, and limited. We have Streaking (which I completed in 3 minutes), but it seems Fight Club is gone. As pointed out, Insurance Fraud just seems... *yawn*
 • EDIT: Almost forgot about the removal of cruise control. That was one feature I loved in SR2, since it made driving and shooting much easier.
Things I hate:

 • Repetitive NPC comments, especially during battle. Way too much repetition.
 • Zimos. I hate Zimos.
Overall, I am really liking it. Most of the things wrong are minor annoyances. And it still has that off-the-wall edge.
Gimp Chariot chase, anyone?

@sp00ge:

Cruise Control is still in the game. It's down on the D-pad while in a car/bike.

Yeah... they removed (at the very least): FUZZ & Ambulance/Taxi/Firetruck diversions. I don't know what else was removed... I never played them, but I did like the option to be able to play them. :(

DLC with this crap in 3... 2.... (THQ would do it. They're about as money-grubbing as EA and Activision)

Gone are FUZZ, Ambulance/Taxi/Fire Truck, Septic Avenger, Crowd Control, Demo Derby, Fight Club and I haven't really seen drug trafficking so far. Of those that are in the game there are only a couple of levels of advancement instead of six per challenge location. Some of the ones that have stayed in the game seem, I don't know how to put it exactly, but tacked on? They don't seem as well thought out or developered as the activities in SR2. There's a full city zombie cheat but no zombie mini-game. Freckle Bitches and any food/booze/drug healing items are gone in exchange for a multi-grenade system.

Personally I don't care much for using the phone for missions. Usually with these open world games when you have to drive to a location to pick up a mission over and over again it helps you get the layout of the city. I really dislike how they've made the activities just a part of the story because they're all pretty easy and boring to do. I've had a couple 'missions' so far that were only short cutscenes (WTF?). Once the mission starts the game just starts at the beginning of where you need to be and just dumps you out in the world after. There's just really little incentive to explore the city.

Steelport is bland as hell. You've got city and industrial areas. At least the other city had variety with the locations (rich/poor/college/stadium/asian area/beach/prison).

I'm really hoping it picks up. I'm about 6 hours in and as a huge Saint's Row 2 fan, I'm not digging the changes at all.

i noticed for $20 you can buy the season pass. i guess the season pass is this years online pass. seems like every game that came out recently has a season pass (gears 3, uncharted 3, saints 3) ranging from 20-35 dollars. dont know how i feel about buying a promise. with the season pass you have a good chance of being roped into some lame ass DLC you otherwise wouldnt have purchased, but the flip side to that is if its great DLC and you dont buy the pass you pay a little more. i dont like it.

Well if you go to buy the pass on 360 on the confirmation screen you can at least see the names of the 4 add-ons from the pass before you click buy. I didn't write them down, but I just hope they are better than the Gears 3 and Uncharted 3 season passes.

I got my season pass for free for preordering from THQ directly so I can't complain.

Saints Row: The Third Season Pass includes the listed game content at a discounted rate over individual purchases. If you own this Season Pass all content should be accessed through the in-game store AND NOT DOWNLOADED from Xbox LIVE Marketplace or you will be charged twice. Nyte Blayde Pack, Genkibowl VII, Gangstas in Space, The Trouble With Clones. Saints Row: The Third game required; sold separately.

I know the story is supposed to be over-the-top and crass, and all of that, but it feels like an R rated FOX Kids show. #-o

I wish they added a bit more darkness to it.

Ditto on this and everything else you said.

I've noticed this a lot -- people who were huge Saint's Row 2 fans don't seem to dig this one a lot, while people who have never really messed with the series love this game. This doesn't apply to everyone but this seems to be the general consensus from people who are playing.

There is just too much removed and changed from Saints Row 2 that I dislike... the notoriety system is near the top of that list. Way too easy to simply cancel everything out. Nothing like robbing a store you own, walking outside and walking back in to erase everything

Maybe the last act gets insane but I'm about 3/4 of the way in and where is this "over the top craziness" we were promised? It seems everything that was so over the top was spoiled by the many, many videos they had shoving these things down our throat. I've yet to see anything new and insane and many of the missions are kind of bland; so much stuff is simply shown to you as cutscenes rather than you actually DOING it. I've played two other games this year that did the whole "airplane crashing" thing so, so much better... and they were interactive.

And I just finished every Mayhem mission, and other than the achievement, I got no reward whatsoever? Such a step down from Saints Row 2, where so much cool shit was able to be unlocked by completing the diversions. On that subject, Genki was disappointing as hell, finished all six in under an hour without dying once and didn't really find the commentary that funny.

I'm not feeling the mission structure... I like past Saints games where each gang had their own mission track and you really got to know each gang. Here, I am 31 missions in and the gang's personalities are just kind of meh with a large focus on the Mourningstar at the expense of the other two gangs. Also, the gangs vehicles are kind of boring, just seems to be the same cars reskinned? Seems to be a lack of cars overall, a lot of them feel the same.

Also, that Sublime moment was ruined for me... I was enjoying it, got to the destination early and panned the car around to see the characters just sitting there lifeless. That really broke the immersion for me, hearing them laugh and enjoy the song but then actually seeing them just sitting there with a blank look on their face.

TL;DR is that it seems to have a lot removed from Saints Row 2 and feels like a step back rather than a sequel, as Saints Row 2 had so much more to do.

Also, I'm pretty sure Skyrim spoiled me; my first time looking at the map I thought "Is this all there is?"

Seriously fuck these go steal a vehicle and deliver it type of missions. I am getting annoyed how I have to pick up vehicles that drive 10 mph top speed probably and I have to drive halfway across the map with cops shooting at me every 3 seconds.

I died a lot of times here.

No reward for finishing Insurance Fraud either.

Saints Row 1 and 2 were the masters at rewarding you for finishing side missions; now the Activities are easy as hell for the most part (like Scorch said, Insurance Fraud is rigged in such a way its almost impossible to fail) and so far, the rewards aren't worth it if there is a reward at all.

Only Trail Blazing offered something decent out of the ones I finished, imo.

Well, after my initial review, I am really starting to question myself. I've put in ~11 hours, and am at 60% completion, and should be able to wrap it up tonight/tomorrow, aside from the 30 hour achievement.

At this point, there have been some good moments
the last decker VR mission
, but it seems to be falling flat now. Unlike others, I really like most of the interface changes. As far as side missions go, they are really lacking, in both substance and difficulty. This may be the first game I've completed 100% in less than a week.

On a related note, the headset in the Platinum edition are very.... meh. The sound quality is so-so, especially for requiring 2x AAA batteries. As far as the vocoding/mic quality, it's horrible. While it works, no matter what, there's always a bathroom echo effect. Both my fiance and I tried it, and while the effect is there, the echo is too much to ignore.

I'm sure that once I finish the game, I'm just going to throw it up on Amazon, while the used value is only slightly under new.

Color me a sad panda.

Yeah the more I play of this the more I wish it was more. I mean I been playing since Tuesday, haven't even touched a story mission outside of the first 3-4 to unlock the open world part, and I already own every buisness in the game while making 34k an hour. In fact I am going to say Saints Row 2 is probably a better game in many ways. Probably going to stop playing it tonight and just wait for Zelda on Sunday/

I really felt if Volition could of knocked this out of the park, this game would of gave GTA V a run for it's money. Now I just pray Rockstar puts the crazy back into GTA V.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were saving alot of the old side mission stuff for DLC, which would be an uber shitty move.

Man, I miss Fuzz. I Miss stopping a hooker uprising with my trusty flamethrower. Plus I like upgrading weapons, but it almost feels like I'm breezing through this game slightly too fast because there isn't as much distractions.

QFT, I have been doing side missions and just controlling neighborhoods. I get stuck to them first then move onto the story. But geez,
i feel like another couple hours and they will all be done. SR2 took me a lot more time and had better side missions IMHO.

After playing some missions and diving deeper, I'm enjoying it a lot more, but it still feels lacking. I can't believe that they removed the emergency missions, fight club, etc.

I have found more places to go in, including a strip club.. But why are no casinos open? Why can't you gamble with the insane amount of money you get? Do the developers not realize how much time could be wasted on gambling mini games alone?!

I am worried they make a gambling and minigame DLC and a side mission DLC type of deal.

I have never really played the SR franchise much, but was getting pretty psyched about the hype behind this game. Seems like a little too much of it was just that: hype.

With as much love as SR2 has received in this thread, perhaps I should just start off with that and wait for SR3 to drop to the $20 range itself.

That would be your best bet honestly.

Man, you can tell exactly where in the game they cut out the Nyte Blade content just to make it DLC.

Plus, I finally got some cool shit to mess around with... with six story missions left. Unless these last six missions are amazing, this game was no more over the top than SR 2 was, maybe even less so.

Those .45 Shepards fully upgraded are extremely overpowered... I've used those almost the entire game exclusively and have ripped through every single enemy with them.

Someone on NeoGAF claimed that one of the assassination missions is impossible if you've taken over the whole city; you have to piss off the morningstar to make the target appear, but there is no morningstar to piss off if you've wiped them off the map.

Now that is poor form, if its true.

You know this game is kinda broken in a sense. I haven't done more than maybe 4 story missions and well I am already up to level like 17 and I am making 34k an hour with all the business and such I own which means I can afford all the upgrades I want with no trouble.

So basically I am unstoppable in any combat situation due to the fact my weapons are OP with upgrades and well I could imagine the rest of the game will be a cakewalk.
