Saint's Row: The Third- Strap it On 11/15/11

I Got the SMG's with fire bullets right now and it makes every combat situation a cake walk. The only enemies who are really a pain in my ass are the Decker's specialist gang member (the bitches on rollerblades with the giant sickle) paired with a specialized brute. Besides this I've put little over 16 hours into the game and I'm already at about 60% completion. It's still fun, but Jesus not enough content in the game itself. At least I got DLC coming with the season pass.

Oh and I hate Shandi's new look.

So yea, can't do the Almonzo assassination because it requires me to stir up trouble with the Luchadores... and I captured all of their territory and no more will spawn.

Any ideas?

The gangs don't take back their territory, there is no alternative ways to get him to spawn... this just seems like a huge oversight on Volitions part, as I usually always save the assassinations for last so I don't have to worry about the gangs.

Edit: Ok, I figured it out if anyone else gets stuck in this. You have to activate the hitman mission, drive to the area it tells you to and just run over / kill civilians... the gang stars will start increasing and the respective gang will show, regardless if you've taken the area or not.

Beat the story mode last night, and
what a fucking letdown. I chose to save Viola and Shaundee, so I'm going to replay the final mission and let them die this time to see if the ending is any better. Gangsters in Space was even lame.

I'm not even aiming for for completion at this point, I'm just bored with the game, which is very sad. This was the one game I was eagerly awaiting since it's announcement.

I already have it up on Amazon, and might play a little more here and there until it sells, but that's it.

I don't even think that's the canon ending, since when you finish it your main mission percent is 45 / 47. I won't spoil the other ending, but since it brings the counter up to 47 I think its the canon one and while its a little better, its still not that amazing imo.

Gangsters in Space would have been awesome if they were ACTUALLY in space. As it is, it was stupid and that boss battle was boring.

I got to 19 hours, 94% completion, 890 / 1000 achievements and yea, I'm done too, mostly due to boredom.

I'm gonna hold onto the game for the small, small chance that the DLC is decent. Luckily, I only paid $20 for the game thanks to K-Mart's sales.

I'm at 55% with 21 hours. Really love it, but I agree that the content (much less, WHY ARE HALF OF THE MISSIONS JUST ACTIVITIES?!) is severely lacking.

Tons of fun in co-op though. Seems like a game that mostly fore-goes the various activities for lots of random free-world stuff to do with a friend. But that's just me. I'm still thoroughly enjoying the gameplay itself, at least.

Same, and GIS was a really lame way to wrap everything up. After how much I loved SR2, this was a big let down for me.

Just started the game and first impressions are not good. First of all the analog movement is a little jerky, maybe its my controller? I have it set to 10 sensitivity, and sometimes it goes slow, fast, ... when i move my RS around sometimes its not smooth. IDK, maybe its just me?

Another thing is when the radio is on you cant hear the car at all. I expect to hear the engine rev, and stuff like that.

EDIT: Im starting to get the hang of it, just the overall gameplay. Think i just needed to play it more to get used to it. I think its kind of dumb how you can lose the cops/gangs simply by entering a building. After i learned that i had some fun just killing people, cops, gangs and going in and out of buildings. But it seems like it would make missions a lot easier. I dont really remember that much from past SR games, as far a characters go, but i assume you are the same person from SR1 and 2, right?

I Got to admit the final few missions from Murderbrawl to the all out war and the soundtrack to go with it are fucking awesome. As in one of my favorite moments in gaming this year I dare say.

Johnny Gat's death was pretty half assed though I gotta say. Though I liked both endings either way in all honesty. The Shandi ending was tongue in cheek while the other ended on a more curious note for the sequel.

After all is said and done though, the game really gave me a weird Crackdown vibe.

I remember you were the same guy from Saints Row 1 to Saints Row 2, they used the boat explosion at the end of SR1 as a way to tie in the character customization. I'm not sure how SR3 starts out, but I'd presume you're the same guy, leader (or somewhere around there) of the Saints.

Even though the game might not be nearly as good as Saints Row 2, would you guys still recommend it for co-op? Maybe when it's on sale? It's disappointing to see it's not nearly as good as everyone hoped.

Does anybody know if the Half-Price DLC Trick works with the Prof Genki Pre-Order bonus or season pass content?

It should work with the season pass. I have never used it for a prepaid code, so your guess is as good as mine.

Was anyone else just not feeling the guest stars voice acting either?

Sasha Grey really just came off as monotone and boring, and the other two (minor spoilers I guess)

Hulk Hogan was so miscast its not even funny. Angel De LaMuerte looks of spanish descent, is a luchadore and even has a spanish name... yet he's voiced by Hulk Hogan? Who gave a very wooden performance at that. Shit, Rey Mysterio Jr would have knocked that role out of the park, if they wanted a wrestler to voice it.

I think Hulk Hogan would have done MUCH better as Killbane. Also, if Angel shows up in the next game or any DLC, chances are good it won't be Hulk Hogan so we'll get another jarring voice actor change, just like Shaundi.

Also, what was the deal with Daniel Dae Kim? Killed off-screen at the beginning of the game? Makes you wonder if he wanted more money or something and THQ and Volition just said fuck it. Johnny Gat and Kim were one of the things that made Saints Row a great series, so to just kill him so easily.. I don't know.

Its so jarring to me because the 1st male voice and the 1st female voice you can pick for your character are so incredibly good.

To be fair, she sounds the same in her porn.

He's been stabbed and literally shot numerous times. I Don't understand how Johnny Gat bit it either.

Though for some reason I wouldn't be surprised if he came back in one of the DLC in someway.

I doubt it, because at one point, I unlocked Zombie Gat as a homie. But who knows..

In the beginning it just feels like random mission after mission but they consist of side games. Now im starting to get into the story. Im still disappointed we arent in the same city, stillwater? Something like that. When i look at the map it just looks like a GTA IV rip. LOL. So far it seems more about sex than it does about gangs. So far i think they really went too far with the sex stuff.

I read on one forum someone threw this out as a possibility about one of the DLCs:

The "Trouble With Clones" DLC could be about someone getting Gat's body and cloning it, resulting in him potentially coming back to the series at the end if they kept a clone.

Yea, its a long shot... I'm expecting a DLC where you just fight off waves of Brutes or something stupid.

But since this DLC was planned from the beginning and it is the last one, that would be one way to go out and get people talking about Saints Row 4.

And yea, Steelport is extremely boring. I was never able to pinpoint the reason but the entire city just feels uninteresting.

Going in and out of building to lose heat will not effect missions because most of the story missions are just of the corridor shooter variety and do not have any driving within them.

Beat it and I've got a few odd things
I chose to remove Killbane's mask since I didn't have the option to kill him. Angel said it would be better to let him live in shame. Then at the end of the game suddenly Angel thinks it is more important to kill Killbane than save the Saints tied to the monument? And Killbane already has his mask back?

Why have the main character say 'fuck Ganstas in Space, the Saints aren't going to sell out anymore' right before the final mission, but then the epilogue mission is the main character shooting Gangstas in Space?

Why didn't STAG just immediately blow up the Saint's HQ? After they did why is it still usable/shows up in cutscenes as well and is entirely intact?

I chose to save Shaundi and I got an ending where so far through the game the first antagonist got squished in a cutscene, one of the sisters got killed by Killbane, the Decker's leader just left down and Killbane flew out, and the head of STAG makes threats. One, WTF is up with not really having a satisfying way of killing any of the main enemies? Two, when the STAG dude makes a threat the main character says 'The Saints aren't domestic terrorists'. Really? Because in the third mission of the game I broke into the national guard, killed a lot of soldiers, stole weaponry, and then shortly after blew up a skyscraper. That line makes no sense.

Also love how all the DLC is 316KB. For a game that feels like it has a lot less content than SR2, they're selling some of the content on the disk as DLC.

I hope THQ goes under and a better publisher picks up Volition.

I think I can help with a few of these:

The Killbane mask thing is hilarious; I was wondering how that would play out if you actually took his mask -- I went with the Apocafist option, which is one of the few weapons I thought was amazingly awesome, but yea you can chalk this one up to the writers not doing a great job and the game probably being rushed.

The Gangstas In Space ending I'm almost positive isn't canon -- the counter reads 45 of 47 missions completed and the game even gives you an option to replay the last mission, which features the last two story based missions. So yea, just write this off as it not being the real ending. The other ending actually has hints towards the next Saints Row game, which leads to another question which is really minor spoilers if you haven't played it.

In the second ending, they talk about Pierce becoming the mayor... but, um, aren't they on good terms with Burt Reynolds?? Again, shitty writing, I was left scratching my head on that one.

What I want to know is you do a mission to evacuate your crew from Saints HQ because STAG is attacking it, correct? Why do you need to KEEP GOING THERE TO GET MISSIONS??? And Pierce and Olag are just hanging out inside of it?? That made zero sense to me.

And yea, for its "over the top" craziness it was supposed to provide, Matt Miller just fucking walks away? Viola joins the Saints? Killbane does get whats coming to him when you go with the real ending but that Matt Miller thing was the fucking worst. Expect him to show up as DLC or some nonsense. None of the gangs were fleshed out at all like previous games... the fact that their vehicles are all palette swaps was a shame too.

Also, where the hell is Dex? He gets away in the Saints Row 2 DLC and they say they are going to track him down no matter what... but now they have seemingly forgotten he exists. If you're going to keep the same plots going through all three games, be consistent.

I'm sitting the next Volition game out -- after making Saints Row 2 and Red Faction: Guerrilla, both games I thought were amazing, Saints Row 3 and the new RF kind of sucked imo so who knows what to expect from this company anymore.

The Gangstas in Space doesn't happen on the other ending? It was a really lame way to end the game. But that would mean in the other, possibly canon, ending that Shaundi dies so that you can get Killbane, despite having several chances to kill him before. With Gat dying off camera pointlessly as well, that's kind of shitty too.

Yeah, they blow up the HQ, and then they keep using it despite it as though nothing happened.

I feel pretty dumb for not taking the Apocofists.

I think I'm done with all THQ games for awhile.

If you don't want to play it through, I'll just spoil the other ending for you --

You go after Killbane, beat him to death in a kind of lame QTE, Shaundi and Viola eat it in the explosion. Hughes tells Cyrus that Daedalus is a go.

Saints are at the bar remembering their fallen comrades, Cyrus shows up in a big ass helicarrier and starts destroying the city.

Your characters grabs a helicopter, places charges on the helicarrier, kills Cyrus and blows up the helicarrier.

Game ends with the Saints emancipating Steelport from the rest of the United States on live television with Jane Valdorama, with Pierce being given the title of mayor... for no reason whatsoever, even though Reynolds is on their side if you dump the zombie gas.

Game then ends. I say its the canon ending because the counter now reads 47 / 47, Cyrus dies, Killbane dies, it sets up a potential Saints Row 4 and kills off or removes all of the characters voiced (or who were voiced) by a celebrity except for Angel.

I went to watch it on youtube, and goddamn, that ending is also dumb as hell.

So Pierce is one of the only long term Saint to still be alive (aside from the main character)? And he's going to be mayor instead of the guy who is already on the side of the Saints? They hold a funeral for the chick he could have just saved? We're supposed to believe STAG was given leave to just level the city?

Plus it sounds like Steelport would then be the city used for SR4. Jesus.

I think you are right about it being the canon ending because Daedelus was foreshadowed earlier, which would seem odd if they never use it.

But goddamn. Both endings suck.

and its in my garage, but when i go there its not on the list. Why?

also why am i
lighting people on fire, along with myself when i taunt. Did i miss something here? I dont remember buying any power up or anything that would do that.

Damn i think i had a glitch in the end.....
gangstas in space
....
the last Y on killbaine my dude was just standing there and i could walk around while i see killbaine get flipped over and then blood splattered out of his body. Then it went to the cutscene where he had a stalagmite through his chest.

Jet bike counts as an aerial vehicle. Not a car or bike.

Yeah i figured that out eventually... XD

I beat the game, i like how they allow you to replay the ending to choose the other option. Somehow i was able to do both 2nd options, but still have an achievement left for choosing the other option #1. But i really dont know how i ended up getting both options for the 2nd part. IDK.

This game is pretty good. I think the prob is the beginning where they have missions that feel like its a tutorial for side missions such as insurance fraud, or escort. I cant even remember the story much up until the luchadors come into the picture. The beginning part of the game has way too much sex into it all. But after a while it seems to go away for the most part.

Im not even sure who that johnny cage guy is, was he even in Saints row 2? You know the actor in the beginning....

I dont buy the "this ending is cannon because 45/47 missions are done... im pretty sure no matter what ending you choose it will end with 45/47 missions done, and wont be 47/47 till you do the other option. How does that prove which ending is cannon?

I went back and chose the other option, and it opened up a new mission when the Daedalus shows up and starts bombing the shit out of everything. You have to blow it up and kill Cyrus. This ending feels far more complete, as the other ending really doesn't fully address STAG.

As far as Johnny Gat, he's been a main character since Saints Row 1. And yes, he's the guy you have to bust out of court at the beginning in SR2.
The guy is supposed to be tough as hell, and nearly impossible to kill according to storyline, yet he is offed in such an unspectacular way.

I decided to keep playing to finish up the achievements, and am currently sitting at 92%. It should only take another hour or two to clean up the list few activities and challenges.

It has to be because of
Daniel Dae Kim. Either him and Volition had a falling out due to money, he was too busy to commit to the role or something else and they figured that instead of pulling a Shaundi and changing his voice, they'd just straight up kill him completely and this way, Kim would no longer be needed.

This is the only situation I can think of, because he dies so early on and so abruptly; the only homie version of him is Zombie Gat, who doesn't use his voice iirc, and in Gangstas in Space, Gat's voice isn't his and sounds like Josh Burke's voice.

And yea, thinking of SR 2 that beginning was way better than SR 3.

I didnt mean johnny gat, that other dude who is an actor, reminds me of johnny cage from mortal kombat. I didnt really follow who he was, or why he was with the saints, etc. I cant even remember his name.

Don't think that needed to be spoilered, but he's new character in the game. That's all. He's there for the beginning to learn his role as a Saint and comes back half way.

So has anyone been able to upload screenshots and view them on the website? Mine always say they have been uploaded, but when i try to click photos it doesnt do anything. But my created characters show up. Also the site says Videos, i dont even know if its possible to make videos in Saints Row.

EDIT i think video capture is only on the pc version, which is disappointing. -_-

I think my favorite car in SR is the Toad ATV, i love pimping that out. Loved to cruise around in it while playing Saints Row 2, glad they left it in the game. I just wish there was a jet pack. Getting in and out of flying vehicles gets tedious when collecting collectibles. lol.

Is there a way you can replay missions like in Saints Row 2 once you finish the game?
So has anyone been able to upload screenshots and view them on the website? Mine always say they have been uploaded, but when i try to click photos it doesnt do anything. But my created characters show up. Also the site says Videos, i dont even know if its possible to make videos in Saints Row.

EDIT i think video capture is only on the pc version, which is disappointing. -_-

I think my favorite car in SR is the Toad ATV, i love pimping that out. Loved to cruise around in it while playing Saints Row 2, glad they left it in the game. I just wish there was a jet pack. Getting in and out of flying vehicles gets tedious when collecting collectibles. lol.

Nope. You can only replay one mission.

Man escort missions are so annoying, and im not talking about the tiger ones. Im trying to do a hard one, and then the thing says media has almost enough footage, but im driving around not being seen and the bar isnt even going up. Its so annoying when 3 vans come in and crash into you on purpose. Is there any tricks to this? Man i hated these and snatch in Saints Row 2.

I only have 11 activities left to do, 1 escort, 4 snatch, 4 heli assault, and 2 trafficking.

Are you doing the Clients special requests, like powersliding, car damage, etc?

You can always do the buy out of a property. It happens when you do it in exchange for Nyte Blade or can buy it (but only once). I Used one of them on the property around the airport and the escort mission (the one with the HARD difficulty) was counted as completed. Thank God because it saved me a ton of headache.

And the new car jacking side mission sucks ass. So tedious and far a drive.

I 100% the game. Funny thing is i tried the escort side mission again and did it on the first try. Not sure why it was easier now. But i was able to save the purchase territory for a hard heli attack that i couldnt beat.

The city is still unfamiliar to me, even after putting in 28 hours. There are times when i get to an area and it reminds me of parts of the city from saints row 2. But this city really isnt much, same buildings copy and paste here and there. Meh.

The games character customization is disappointing, not when making the person, but what you can do with them. I was just telling my friend that in saints row 1 i had star tattoos on the back of my calves, and i liked them. Saints row 2 took them out, okay. I had a cool saints row 2 guy with nice tats and some high striped socks/shorts. LOL. Here comes saints row 3, worse tattoo selection, no socks. Most of the outfits are like thick sweaters or suits. They just look bad, and i think they really dropped the ball when it comes to tattoos and clothing.

Modding cars is cool, and there is a trick you can do to mod non-moddable cars. Go to rim jobs, pick a car you can mod. Then hit Y to mod, go to garage and highlight the non-modable car you want to mod, hit A... when it asks you are you sure, back out and it will have you modding your car you were about to select.

I finished the car stealing jobs, now i just have to do hitman, and uhhh the other one. I think the other one is just random challenges. I like the achievement name for doing all the hitman missions, its a play off assassins creed.

The site slowly added my screen shots for me to approve and name. But they arent showing up on my player page, in fact nothing is. So give them a little more time and im sure it will all be up and running. Not sure if i will have the game still by then.

Screen shots can be viewed and saved if you go to..

Community > Map > My map... under that will show my photos. There you can see your photos on the map, where they were taken, and you click them to enlarge them. Save em to your pc and upload them. This is a good way to get them until they have it up 100%.

here are a couple photos i took.

I almost clicked the Spoilers tag at the bottom thinking it was another harmless picture. Almost.

I need to grab this already so I can view this thread without worrying about spoilers.

Well its not a story related spoiler.... its more of an easter egg from saints row 2.

I dont think im going to get the complete all challenges achievement, probably the only achievement i wont get. There is just too much stuff in there to do, and considering im 100% territory and only have 3/50 taunt gang members, that seems like it would be hard. Unless i get them to come out and then walk into a shop, back out, then taunt. IDK that might work. But still there is a lot of challenges to complete to get that achievement.

Haha this game.... i was playing a 2nd save to get an achievement i couldnt get before. So i pass the mission, save, then load my old first play through. Then i get in a car and the news lady talks about the mission i beat on my other save. o_O
Am I only the one who thinks Saints Row 2 was way better than this toned down crap?
I'd hardly if ever call this game crap. There are somethings that I miss alot that aren't in SR3. Like the amount of robust distractions or just larger town, but in a trade off I got things like a more varied campaign and a fun upgrading system. So I'd hardly say it's a bad game by any means. That and it in no way is going to stop me from wanting to get Saints Row 4 now whenever it hits.
I'm interested in this game, but should I play SR1 and SR2 first? I can wait for the price to drop on this...
I'd only worry about playing SR 2, but you can get the SR 1/2 dual pack for $20 at Gamestop or possibly Amazon. Or you can buy the PS3 version of SR 3 and redeem the online pass before Feb. 13 to get a download token of SR 2 for free.

And I am officially done with the game. All but two achievements, one for the Challenges and the other for the Chop Shops.

I gave up on getting the cars due to an ultra annoying glitch that is preventing me from getting several vehicles. No matter what I try, within 30 seconds of getting to the area where I'm to find the car, it pops up a message saying that the target vehicle has been destroyed, despite it never showing on the minimap. Annoying? Yes.

I would disagree about the game being more varied. If anything the missions, aside from the activity tutorials, are nearly all the same. Walk, shoot, maybe destroy an objective. Not really any car chases, or really much with vehicles at all that isn't an on rails segment. There are a couple of stand out missions, but overall the campaign is shorter and
you never even get to take out any of the gang leaders, at least if you choose to save Shaundi, which feels much less satisfying after an interesting mission, like after deckers.die for the gang leader to just leave town
.

Since THQ pretty much crippled the developer by cutting half the staff during development, and they're selling on disk items as DLC (even if you have the pre-order and season pass), I plan on skipping Saints Row 4 if THQ is still the publisher.

For the chop shop vehicles, if they are destroyed, just restart the mission from where you stand and it should spawn a new one. I remember i was supposed to steal one of those swat air planes from central park and they blow up so easy. 2 or 3 blew up when the military guys started to shoot at me just for entering. So i restarted the mission and a new one appeared and i got in and jetted out asap and was able to capture it. I think the other one that blew up was a boat? Not sure. It didnt happen too often.

Ive been trying to mow down those challenges for the last achievement. Im up to 16/50 gang taunts. Finished car surfing, one that seems hard is the one where you jump out of the car and let the car ghost ride and create damage. Torpedo? Whenever i do it i get like no cash towards that challenge if any.

I Think more personally for me Murderbrawl (even with it kinda being one long QTE) made the game for me. Just because it was so corny, but hard to play through with it without a giant smile once the music kicks in.
