CAGiversary!
I think the delay was worth noting in the title. I don't see why DMK is
'n it up.

I wouldn't say that trying 2/4 control schemes is a "big aspect". Sure, it's definitely a component of the event, but the main focus is actually getting to play the game, in all aspects. This should be an exciting event for gamers, not a hum-drum look at control specifics.Nintendo showed off a playable, work-in-progress version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii at a media event today. The playable demo of the game featured 14 playable characters, including the recently announced Sonic the Hedgehog. We were able to pick any of the fighters and dive into a two-minute KO brawl on one of 11 stages. Although the playable demo was obviously focused on letting the assembled press get their hands on the game, the other big aspect of the demo was the ability to try out two of the control schemes being used, either with the classic controller or only the Wii Remote.
Granted, all of the characters have been previously announced. But since when are Sonic, Meta Knight, Pit, Diddy Kong, and Ike "the usual suspects"? I certainly haven't ever played as them in Smash. Just a general negative tone to take when delivering a preview. God forbid that fans actually want to know how the new characters play, and any details about them.Prior to our initial hands-on time, a brief presentation for the game by a Nintendo rep offered a quick overview of the schemes and showed off the game's familiar mechanics, as well as some of the new tweaks being made. The roster of fighters included the usual already-announced suspects: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Fox McCloud, Pikachu, Diddy Kong, Pit, Meta Knight, Ike (from the Fire Emblem series), Peach, Yoshi, Sonic, and Bowser. As with the previous games, each character can be personalized a bit with a set of alternate color schemes to choose from.
"It's Smash Brothers, and it's fun." That's it!? That's all you have to say about it? Did your Halo 3 previews go "It's Halo, and it's fun"? Horrible reporting. After two quick battles--one between Mario and Samus, and the other featuring Sonic and Link--we were able to try the game ourselves. Although we intend to clock in a lot more time with the game, our initial impressions are: It's Smash Brothers, and it's fun. Nevertheless, the jury is still out on the two control schemes; currently we're not thrilled with either option, and we're longing for a GameCube controller. Regardless, we're going to keep an open mind and log in time before rendering judgment.
You couldn't get any more understated if you tried. How about comparing the visuals to other Wii games? Not many games this generation run at 60fps, and yet all they can say is that it "moves at a smooth clip"?Our first take on the visuals in action is that they're sharp, with nice bits of flash peppered throughout. Character models look good, and the stages are nicely designed, with a lot of motion and dynamic elements that include plenty of hazards. The game moves at a smooth clip, regardless of how crazy the visuals get, which should keep things vibrant and wild.
There was just no substance in this "hands-on", and what was there had such an apathetic and/or negative tone. That's what we have so far, but you can expect more soon. In the meantime, we'll have videos and an interview on the game up shortly.
I'm pretty sure he didn't want the addition because (IIRC) this thread was originally about Smash Bros. site updates, and the site didn't mention anything about the new release date. Minor point, I'm sure, but that along with a mod editing his posts when it's not necessary... I can understand his reaction. Control freak, maybe, but nothing to do with being fanboy. But it's mostly serious as I don't see why else anyone would get upset over someone adding a huge piece of news to their thread title. It was just a nice service to the forum. If it was my thread, I'd be happy that the mods saved me some time. *shrugs*
What's been found out:Some of the other characters like Princess Peach may seem a bit weak, with slower attacks and a plodding pace. But the addition of the Smash Ball seems to help balance things a bit. The fast and easy-to-use characters like Meta Knight have super directional Smash Ball attacks (if you don't place it correctly, the whole thing is basically a dud), but Princess Peach has a large screen-filling one that starts off with two mirror images of her showing up on the right and left sides, blowing a kiss of rose petals, followed by round, fuzzy peaches raining from the sky, effectively wiping out everything in sight.
