Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info

I was under the impression Sakurai and Kojima were buds? I don't remember where I got that from, but you guys/gals can just take my word for it.

And that's not a smirk.

Not so sure about this update. Yeah it's cool that they're adding to the fighting mechanics, but still...

Say your buddy is going for an item, and you try to jump in front of them to grab it for yourself. If you accidently jump on top of their head, you're now spring-boarded past the item- effectively screwing yourself.

no, you dont do it on accident, it requires you to hit the jump button AGAIN in a specific window as you are closing in on the head.

I mean, it'll happen on accident, but so do a lot of things. Cant wait till someone finds a CHAIN jump with fastfalling, if fastfalling is still there.

I hope there's some sort of limitation to this. Like the opponent has to be standing still or rather not performing any sort of third jump/attack. Even though this is a "meteor" it just gave everyone a greater chance of killing opponents downward which can either be good or bad for the game. I just hope the competitive/tournament scene is preserved as the next iteration comes. These introductions to new moves/mechanics is a bit scary after being immersed in Melee for so long. But then again, much of what was introduced in Melee was generally seen as positive and remains so. I just hope for the best is all.

How I see this footstool jump is like a wall jump 'cept utilizing the opponents head as the base (I wonder if it'll takeup your second jump or not). It can even be a taunt. It reminds me of the basketball move where the ball is bounced off the opponents face, generating massive "Oh SHIET"s from the crowd.

^I assume you're one of the Kojima/MGS fans? Personally, I would love to see Snake get the axe, he just doesn't have the right vibe with Smash IMO. Is his neutral b attack going to be a socom shot that kills in one hit in the head instead of knocking the opponent off the stage?

Nope, I've never actually played a Metal Gear or even a Kojima involved game.

I'm only just aware that he apparently backflips off a missle in Twin Snakes.

I'm not going to dismiss the merit of anyone being there until I see how they are in the game. I'll give them that courtesy.

As far as the jump spike being broken, they can just either make it low range and/or low priority, on the grounds that its relatively safe on the recovery side since you get a boost from it.

There can still be regular aerial down A spikes with greater efficacy but maybe being more dangerous.

I think this is great. Melee introduced the air gaurd/evade, which greatly enhanced the strategy alone.

I see this as the same thing - it's a gateway to all sorts of techniques people are going to discover on their own. He even acknowledges it's a good setup for a meteor, so I'm guessing they've playtested the hell out of it.

I think 1-2 techniques like this are going to make the game much deeper, so I welcome their addition.
Also, I believe this update is Sakurai's way of saying Goomba cannot be a character.
your mother is a goomba

according to sakurai the footstool jump has a small frame of opportunity it seems

"Jump! Now press the jump button with perfect timing..."

i think its mostly for last ditch efforts, and acts like an extra jump so your secondary (assuming it hasn't been used yet) and 3rd are still accessible

I think it's going to play the same way the 'precise timing' of attacks in Mario & Luigi and SMRPG did, where once you get it down you almost never miss.

Whether or not Ganondorf is in the game, I'll never be able to take him seriously again, thanks to his Twilight Princess look. I think it's the weird setup he has in his hair.
yea i know what you mean, but hes still been my main since i started playing melee half decently
i call ganondorf whos smash ball move will turn him into ganon (the one from TP), much like bowser ---> giga bowser
God, TP ganon was weaksauce. OoT ganon was so much more badass.
Ganondorf looks great in TP but his girly hair rolls ruin it.
To go back a bit, I believe it was confirmed Snake would not use guns. Hand-to-hand, explosives, and cardboard only.
what about the porno mags? give all the squeaky clean nintendo characters a heart attack m i rite?
I goomba'd yur mom's face.
I want to have your babies!!!!

For breakfast.

*gains their powers*
give me odin's sword and i'll be set
Ganondorf has beastly range in Melee. If he had his sword in Brawl, it'd create a rift in the time space continuum.

But the idea of Ganondorf morphing into Ganondog sounds like an awesome idea for the Smash powerup.
His Pain Train (down+b) gives him all the mobility he could ever need.
ah love it, i spammed the hell out of that move more times than i can count, priority was uber on that one

back on topic, awesome update, i especially like the vulcan jabs, range is looking pretty sexy
So far is looks like they're keeping Fox as a weaker speed character..
Is it just me or does every new iteration of Fox make him look...well...less like Fox?
K...

So its been a long long time and we still havent seen any new characters.

You think no more new characters or something?
I think they are making you wait and want new characters...and then BAM they show Sonic.

Oh how I wish they would show Sonic.

I've seen Fox evolve into new things with all the games. He looked like a cat in the first game, a puppy in Melee, and now he looks like a fucking chipmunk/fat-headed thing in this game. They should just drop the name "Fox" altogether.

The designs were good up until after Melee imo..and they changed the color of his fur in the latest one. Used to be a bright goldish-brown. Now it's more of a darker, dull brown..

I've could've sworn we had this same discussion in the other Smash Brawl thread. I'm at least thankful that the design of Fox is moving away from that slimmer metrosexual look.

And definitely looking forward to any other Starfox series character appearances in Brawl. Yes, I'm in the movement to have Starwolf in Brawl. He would just be badass.
