Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info

I'm going to say this as matter-of-factly as I can, as stone-faced as I can: be thankful if the game ships in March. Because if my not-based-on-any-information hunch is right, it won't.

Contrary to popular belief by those eager to snap back and defend their Mushroom Kingdom, damnit, I'm not trolling, I'm not trying to provoke. I'm looking forward to this game, too. It just seems like Nintendo delays are a lot like Lay's*: you can't have just one. And to me it feels like there's at least one more in addition to this one. So just assume the worst and verbally abuse me when I end up being wrong...or right. I guess the outcome doesn't matter there.

*--Delays, Lay's...get it? Ah, forget it.

EDIT: Oh, no....

Don't mess with my THREAD TITLES!!!!!

Welcome to game development. I could go into any of the PS3/360 threads and be the wolf that cries DELAY and be right some amount of the time. I only assume you are doing it there as well, since I dont go in there myself too much.

Not trying to provoke? But you only come in here when something bad happens. No really, I've looked at all 11 posts you've made in the Smash thread when I reported one of them to the moderators.

Hmm, I'd import it no problem if I weren't sure whether or not the game's servers will be region locked.

I bet it has an English mode anyway. :)

Damnit. So instead of 2 weeks of just Japan, it's not a month. What the hell Sakurai? What the hell?

And there was no cool update this time either. This one, people are gonna be mad about for a while.

I dunno, this update was pretty cool. Definitely the prettiest graphics we've seen so far, and the level looks good. I'd give it a happy Kirby if it weren't for the horrible crushing awfulness of ONE MORE fuckING MONTH.
February is dead to me. Without Brawl it is thirty days of misery.
February has 29 days this year (Leap Year), so cheer up! That's one less day of misery for year.

And I mean, come on. It's just a game. Everybody needs to just coll their jets. It's not like they delayed it another year like they did with Twilight Princess.
February has 29 days
Like I said, it's dead to me. Don't expect me to know things like how many days it has or how it's spelled or what happens during it. It no longer exists.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
I'm sure the game is finished.
It's out in 2 weeks in Japan.

It has to be disc supply issues like people speculate.
DVD shortage?....
I still contend that the game is done, I'm going to blame some combination of the following 3:

1) Disc supply issues
2) Wifi Server buffing
3) Localization issues.

The silver lining for me is that the Japanese delay is only delayed a week :whistle2:#
I'll take a #2, with a side of #3 and can I add an order of "hedging their bets for any bugs in the gold master that pops up in Japan"

One of the unlockables should be a 10 minute long movie presentation that closely chronicles why the hell there have been so many delays, what caused them, what was added with the extra time, and all the derisive commentary Sakurai can level at us.

That would be the funniest, cruelest thing they could do now.

Guys, they apparently listened to me and the delay is required in order for them to.....ADD MEGAMAN!!!!!!!!! (Thank me later).

Well, many expected Smash Bros. to be a launch game for the Wii so...

i saw someone post this and it makes a lot of sense.

The game was delayed for sales pure and simple. There were a ton of great games released toward the end of 2007 and Nintendo doesn't want SSBB to get passed over because people are still playing all the Christmas titles. I also don't think Nintendo wants SSBB to cut into the continued momentum that Super Mario Galaxy has built. Finally, the Wii is still selling out all over the states and I think Nintendo wants to release the game when the excitement over the system has died down a bit. It doesn't do any good to release another system seller when no one can find the system on store shelves. In Japan, things are different. The Wii isn't selling as quickly as in the US and Super Mario Galaxy hasn't produced the same kind of numbers (though it is showing some impressive legs). That's why it's only being delayed in Japan for a week instead of a month. Wanting to build a big enough supply of copies of SSBB also probably played a big part in the decision (since, despite what anti-Nintendo fans will tell you, shortages don't sell more systems or games, they just stop casuals from buying).

Anyone who thinks this delay is for anything but business is kidding themselves. It's a smart move on Nintendo's part and another month isn't going to hurt anybody.
DVD shortage?....
They can't pump 'em out fast enough.
It's going to be the Wii's biggest game in all regions.

That's it.

If the game does indeed come out on 1/31 here in Japan, I'm gonna have to buy a Japanese Wii.

There is just NO WAY I'd be able to go into a game store in between 1/31 and the US release date without seeing the game case SCREAMING at me to buy it.

Good thing I can get a used JP Wii for under $200. *thumbs up*

I just saw the delay news, doh! I was getting it day 1 regardless, but now I'll have even more time to finish up the holiday purchases, so not a huge deal for me, though it is creeping closer to Crisis Core.

Also, this will make me even more likely to get Lost Odyssey on 360. I've been really looking forward to it, but I wasn't sure if it would be a day 1 purchase since I'd probably be playing Brawl a ton more. With the delay, I can justify purchasing it on release day and know I'll have time to play it (one of my new years resolutions is to not buy a lot of games at once since it is hard for me to have time for more than one).
Ya know, it would have been really cool if Pikachu evolved into Raichu via final smash ala Samus to ZSSamus. Now, I hope that some unannounce secret pokemon character will do that.
Now that WOULD be cool. But only if they chose eevee. That way the FS would be a random selection of one of Eevee's evolutions then you could stay as that for the rest of your life. FSing again would devolve you back to Eevee. I really don't want to see TOO many pokemon. Not unless they made a smash spin off with Pokemon only but if Eevee could do that I would approve.

I hope Sakurai doesn't think of this, because he would take his time on such a video causing even more delay. And then he would want to put a "making of the apology video" documentary on there and on and on and on.....

Good morning.
Let me finish my breakfast and I'll start my rapin' nice an early.

I'm so, so, sorry Japanese people...but..I blame you for my delay in Brawl.

Who's up for some pancakes?! :D
 I'm the only one happy about this due to my fear of Smash Bros overshadowing the greatness of No More Heroes.
I might have agreed with you but I'm pretty sure NMH got bumped up already before the delay.. so. there goes that argument.

P.S. The thread titles have sucked since they stopped being explanatory. Today's update isn't "Delay?!?!?" today's update is Distant Planet.

New stage sounds cool. maybe it's because I just woke up but I'm not perceiving the stage very well. I can't tell if it's a real stage or a SSE level. Either way one of my favourite new stages off the bat.

**Considers putting forth a theory in which the delay is to allow more production time for Wii headset mics, which will be a surprise announcement and released along side Brawl for use in online play.**

**Reconsiders in favor of quietly weeping.**

As I said before, I'm fine with the delay since I probably wouldn't have bought it until March or later anyway as I need to clear out some 360 back log first--and those are games I'm more anxious to play than this.

But I guess the delay does suck for the die hard smash fans. I'd be more excited for it if the online random play wasn't so gimped with no rankings, stats, not being able to see player names etc. Plus Nintendo gaming online seems likely to suck. Given how bad Live is at times with annoying kids, I don't have high hopes for Nintendo online given their user base skews younger, and IMO they have the most annoying fanboys on the net.

Then again, if they don't put in voice chat, I suppose that won't matter too much.

"That's an interesting theory, wildnuts."

(And one I happen to agree with completely.* But you--or at least I--can't say that Nintendo is holding back a game for monetary reasons 'round these here parts without severe repercussions. Like being reported to a moderator for...? Some people are just scary-sad in their devotion, pettiness, and woefully underdeveloped sense of humor. I would not be surprised if they would take a life or fall on their own sword if Reggie told them to, all Ming the Merciless-style.)

EDIT: Then again, if they don't put in voice chat, I suppose that won't matter too much.

No, it won't. And besides, the uberhardcore types will only play with one another with some sort of voicechat workaround where they're all Skyped in together, their laptops seated next to them on the couch. Heh--you think I'm kidding? But anyway, I happen to be thrilled about the lack of voicechat. I don't want to hear people period, and no one needs to be ostracized because they won't give less mature players what they want, which is an opportunity to be an inarticulate jackass berating strangers because of their sad, sad lives.

*--And it's why I sense that March 9th is still too soon.

I'm just as excited as the rest of you for this game, but a delay only means that I can enjoy the games I've bought over the past few months more. Especially because my Spring Break for college is like 2 weeks after the release instead of a month and a half.
ok noone is thrilled to lack the option of voice chat.
I love chat on the 360, but as I said above, it's probably a good thing not to have it in a Nintendo game that's sure to have even more annoying ass kids playing.

If you actually think the distribution of annoying kids would be higher on one service over another, you're simply wrong.

I can't get through a game of CoD4 without at least 4-5 annoying people for various reasons.

It's no worse and no better anywhere.

The worst part about the delay is there is no explanation.

It only got delayed by a week in Japan, so there should be nothing additional that is being added. And I'm pretty sure the US version isn't going to "magically" receive updates that Japan doesn't have.

As I have mentioned before, the ONLY reason there would be a US delay would be because of translation delays, or supply problems. It would be nice if they would at least state why as opposed to just announcing a flat out delay.

Yeah, I know this is Nintendo, but I can dream, can't I?

Completely untrue in my experience. Most people I run into on COD4 are my age or at least mature enough to not stick out as a pokemon aged kid. Smash would be FULL of younger kids releative to COD4's user base. Anyone who thinks that the maturity level is no better or worse depending on what games you play has not spent much time on XBL playing different games.

JollyDwarf and others who have said it, I would also not be surprised by yet ANOTHER delay, and you're right about how the die hards get all pissy when even the notion of "delay for profits" is mentioned. I'm not saying I expect it, I'm just saying I would not be surprised if it happened (though would be VERY disappointed).

I'm actually pretty pissed as I was really really looking forward to smash, especially when Olimar was announced. I may not be a die hard smash fan, but i am def a die hard pikmin fan.

Anyway, Dr. MarioKart, you can't just report somebody for being negative or taking joy out of other people's misfortunes. You can hate em', ingor them, or think they're scum but its not (it shouldn't) get anybody booted. The interwebs is indeed NOT serious business.
