Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info

I do get my fair share of assholes in CoD4, and the occasional annoying kid. Annoying kids are much more problem in Halo 3.

But pittpizza definitely got my point. Nintendo has always been, and will always be, the most popular system with the kiddies and parents. Thus the user base there will always skew younger. Especially with the first party games like Smash.

There will definitely be more 13 and under kids playing that than you run into on CoD4 or even Halo 3 just due to the nature of the Wii user base and the Smash Bros franchise.

When I get my ass repeatedly kicked by an eight-year-old, a Nintendo version of "Li'l Poison", I just don't want to know it. Let me keep the illusion alive that it's a real-life ninja trained specifically in the Art of the D-Pad.

Oh darn. Your anecdotal evidence is just airtight and absolute. Especially the part where you can't prove it and just go on assumptions.

This would be the part where I talk about how I've run into enough 12 year olds during CoD4, but that would be using anecdotal evidence as well.

People are stupid across the board. You'll find whiners, idiots, and assholes in fairly equal distribution everywhere. End of story.

^ (Dmauls post)Yep, the disparity between COD4 and Halo3 alone evinces this, SSMB would just take it to the extreme. But I don't care about annoying kids, there is always the mute button and the OPTION to NOT use voice chat.

The arguments: "They don't want VC b/c it will be too annoying" or "No VC b/c they want kids to be sheltered from teh language in a 'safer' community" have never quite resonated with me because ITS JUST A fuckinING OPTION!! You can always NOT use it!! It's like the argument about sex or violence on TV or in the movies: Change the fucking channel or Don't see the movie. Nobody is forcing people to watch these things just like nobody is forcing people to use the voice chat. PARENTS DO YOUR fucking JOB!! Okay I feel better. I just get pissed when lack of parental oversight prevents ME a grown adult from having access to things.

Was it just me or did anybody else have an incling of excitement crawl into the back of their head when they heard about this delay because the thought "It's because they're adding voice chat!" popped into their head?

^(to Strell's post, trying to keep it civil) You point out the deficiency of anecdotal evidence yet proffer your own?? At least you acknowledge it's pretty much all we've got since (1) I/you are not aware of credible studies re: VC, (2) We have no comparative data since...well...the Wii does not have it.

"People are stupid across the board. You'll find whiners, idiots, and assholes in fairly equal distribution everywhere. End of story."

I don't mind that stuff. I just mind the kids that are singing, swearing, throwing out racial slurs, calling everything gay, have annoying high pitched pre-puberty voices etc.

I'm fine getting owned by kids. I was better at games when I was a kid as well, as I had endless hours to spend playing them. I just don't have the time to invest in online gaming to become anything better than mediocre at any one game unless I eschewed single player games and through all my time into a couple online games. And that's not going to happen as I still prefer single player gaming.

Congratulations, I just removed you from ignore since 90% of your posts end up quoted and I end up compelled to respond and get in debates anyway. :D

I agree, there are idiots across the board, and that I'm just going off of my experience.

I run into plenty of idiots on CoD4. But they tend to be adult idiots. And those are much more tolerable than kid idiots with their whiny, pre-pubesecent voices. :D

And I'd be SHOCKED if there weren't more kids on Smash Bros just given that Nintendo's user base always skews younger.

It just varies from game to game, even on the 360. Like I said, I get a lot more kids on Halo 3 than on CoD4. Maybe an equal number of annoying people across the 2, but definitely more kids on CoD4. And again, I hate playing with kids above all else.

Hell, I'd gladly pay double for Live if they'd put up a premium option only open to people over 18 with an age verification system in place during the sign up option.

It's true, there's idiots no matter what game you play online (with voice chat). If you don't believe me go play Uno for XBL. My GOD, how did Uno become such a dirty/foul mouthed game?!

I never knew so much gangstas played Uno, too!
...go play Uno for XBL.
Yeah....okay, no.

And whats up with the pancakes lilboo, I thought we were trying to be healthy? Are they whole wheat pancakes?
I love chat on the 360, but as I said above, it's probably a good thing not to have it in a Nintendo game that's sure to have even more annoying ass kids playing.
I disagree and stress the option portion of my above statement. If Nintendo had a decent online system .. scratch that. If Nintendo had voice chat it woudln't be on by default. I wouldn't even mind if we had to go thru three menus to enable it. Heck I might not even mind if you had to turn it on every day. As I always tell the Oprah parents who complain about xboxlive if you don't like what you're hearing you can just turn it off. This isn't SOCOM. The chat is just going to be for smack talk as it is.
^(to Strell's post, trying to keep it civil) You point out the deficiency of anecdotal evidence yet proffer your own??
normally I don't go around supporting strell but he was being sarcastic.

For the record I don't think you'll have the problem with Smash for different reasons then say COD4. In COD4 it's less of a problem because you have an older audience. Smash will have a completely different audience. The kids who go on Halo2 and can't control themselves don't think Smash is cool. I'm not saying we don't have any F-bomb droping teeny-bopers but it don't be nearly as rampant as some of the popular games on XBL like Halo.

maybe some new info

The third Nintendo GDC session will be the first postmortem of a major 2008 title - "Building Characters: The Super Smash Bros. Brawl Postmortem." Presented by developer Masahiro Sakurai, a veteran of Kirby and Smash Bros., the session will focus on what worked and what didn't work integrating a variety of characters and online play in adapting the game to the Wii
GDC is in what mid-Febuary? well brawl will be out by the end of january, so nothing really to see here.
damn you're right, i doubt they would add anything after they release it in Japan

Wait, it seems like you guys are implying that there's no "ignore" option in online games. I don't play 'em due to my shit connection; is this true? That'd be fucking absurdly stupid. Seems to me that an ignore function coupled with parental controls (which the Wii already has; a system update would likely allow a restriction on internet play if that feature doesn't exist already) would solve all problems with online play. Other than griefers, but that's what the banhammer is for.

If you really want voice chat, this can work with CAGs that have a 360 with UNO and Wii with Smash Bros..

1. Put your headset on, start your 360 and create a private UNO game. Invite all CAGs that will be playing smash bros. Stay in the UNO Lobby.
2. Switch to your Wii and start up Smash Bros and Play online. Bam. Voice chat amongst CAG's.

mirite?

That's true. As long as it's easy to turn off. Problem with Live is you don't have ni game options to just mute everyone. You can mute everyone not on your friends list in settings, but a lot of the times I like to have it on. So it would be nice to just have a toggle option within each game for when I'm not in the mood for it or having a bad night with running in to assholes. As is the best you can do is mute your mic, turn the volume down and set the head set aside.

See, my problem isn't just the kids swearing up a storm, but just that I don't like listening to kids period. I mean I'm not going to sit on the coach and play a game with a 10 year old, chatting it up all the while, so why should I want to do the same online. Sure, some kids are fine to play with, but many are just annoying as shit talking all the time even if they're not saying anything offensive.

So given my grouchy old man, young whipper snapper hating self :D, I'm not optimistic about enjoying random online gaming on first party Nintendo games since they're fan base skews younger than something like CoD4.
Wait, it seems like you guys are implying that there's no "ignore" option in online games.
There's is an avoid user option in Xbox Live, but with something like 8 million xbox live gold users, you're going to run into assholes, annoying kids, etc. regardless of how many you put on ignore.

Part of playing online with random people is just being willing to deal with random assholes. The number of random assholes, little kids etc. varies from game to game, so for me its just a game by game basis on whether the community is tolerable to play random matches with.

CoD4 is generally ok, Halo 3 is tough to swallow at times, and like I said repeatedly I'm not optimistic of the user base for Nintendo first party games given my general dislike of playing with kids and teens.

But why not just mute/ignore the idiots when they start annoying you? Is it a difficult procedure? Seems to me it should be a three-button-presses kind of process. Yeah, it'd be a bit annoying to have to be doing it all the time, but isn't it better than listening to idiots?

Edit:

Wait, so Xbox Live doesn't let you mute individual users? I thought it was, y'know... Good.

XBL lets you mute individual users, or mute everyone who isn't your friend. As for the guys argument, I don't understand it. Why does it matter if you can't mute everyone? Why would that option be necessary if you could just put your headset volume to mute?
Yes, you can mute individual users. Though in some games it's a hassle to get to the option (i.e. 2 or 3 screens to get to the option).

But again, it gets annoying if you're having a bad night of running into assholes as it sucks to have to mute a couple people every single match.

So it would be nice to just have an easy "mute all" option in every game that could be toggled on and off right in the pause menu.
Why would that option be necessary if you could just put your headset volume to mute?
It's annoying to have the headset dangling from the controller when you're not using it. A mute all option with in games would solve that problem.

Some type of credit card based username system would be easy to put into place. If the user puts in their cc info guess what? They are 18. Or the parent who let their little crumb cruncher have said CC is to blame for me calling his kid a "little bitch tit"(lol) when I knock him out with Dr. Mario.(better be in the game after the 1,000th delay)

This delay makes me sad. I wait all this fucking time to play a decent game on the Wii, and I am once again let down. I don't even understand why it is delayed! EGM just had a cover story on this game coming out, it should be 100 percent done!

Bummed though I may be, it gives me more time to go through No More Heroes. I'd rather they get the online 100% perfect than rush it and ruin all that work.

So would this be considered a spring release or is it still technically winter? I wonder how far back Mario Kart will be pushed. I guess we all new that would be a fall release anyways (which I am happy about).

Just because it's done doesn't mean they have a few million copies ready to ship out. Which would you be more angry about: a delay or the game being released but you not getting a copy because they're sold out? I think I would be more pissed about not being able to find a copy.
Bummed though I may be, it gives me more time to go through No More Heroes.
My thoughts exactly. (That and studying, maybe)

The delay is unfortunate, but with all of the distributors telling retailers that the game was going to be delayed I had prepared myself for the bad news.
I wish we would of got a reason for the delay, not just an apology.

I think the Wifi server buffing makes fits with the North American delay being longer, since we like online a lot more.

The recent Live outages might have even brought that to the front of their mind, if it wasnt already.

I knew Nintendo wasn't ready for this big of an online game.
Hopefully they can actually pull it off right this time. Remember mariokart with no battlemode, and only half the race tracks. As long as they do it right, I don't care if its a quarter 4 release.
That's true. As long as it's easy to turn off. fair enough. I don't want to talk to little kids but I wouldn't mind playing against them.

E: Wait a second. It sounds like XBL has two modes. Hear Everyone and Hear Friends only. Why exactly do we need a Hear No one mode? Rather than go through the effort to mute your self and turn down your headset wouldn't it just be easier to..... take off the headset? It's not as if you need the headset to play the game.

I think you might be right.
I have a feeling that no matter how prepared they are the online is going to have problems the first few days after the US launch.

I'd say spring man, at least in Pittsburgh it starts gettin warm in March (usually).

Regardless "Spring Break" is the first week of March.

I HATE ignoring or muting people on XBL, rarely I'll say im muting them and just listen to them desperately try to figure out if they're muted.

The idea is to NOT have to mute people and fill a room with cool dudes (and sometimes but not often cool chicks) I really enjoy communicating on XBL and have actually made some friends in England playing Gears and T Woods. Not "real" friends but ones good enough that I would look up if I were to venture across the pond.

More importantly though, to me anyway, would be voice chatting with my "real life" friends, frat bros. relatives, and other friends that play smash. It would also be cool for some of my gears or COD4 friends could reconvene in Smash. I really can't think of a game where VC would be better used, though there is an argument that its utility is greater in games that require/benefit from a cohesive strategy (e.g. gears, cod4, other shooters).

These generalities and assumptions about what Smash's avg user age would be got me thinking. Will it be younger than XBL's generally? I would guess yes, but I'm 26 and know more than a couple peers that are looking forward to smash too (though no one older than I). It will be (or WOULD be if they had VC) interesting to see if it has ages from single digits to my age or older.

Its hard to say why, but it seems to me that Smash would also have less racism, which is an infrequent but still too common annoyance on XBL.

BTW, I thought "little crumb cruncher" was very amusing as well. I just got a mental picture of a little brat making a mess crunching on some crumbs.

I just wanted to say this is the best fuckin post all day. I LMAO. Little bitch tit, crumb cruncher, fuckin priceless! I also couldnt agree more with last sentence.

I'm gonna steal "lil crumb cruncher" and use it if thats cool. I'll cite it though.

That's why it would be a good idea for them to release an online-enabled SSBB demo. There's nothing like millions of U.S. customers playing online to stress test your servers. They don't even have to have more than a half-dozen or fewer characters enabled. All they would need to test is the online infrastructure.

But that's probably just wishful thinking caused by the fact that I really want to play SSBB.

Like I said, you then have to leave the headset plugged into your controller which is annoying. If you unplug it, you then get the chat through the TV speakers or stereo.

So I guess a quicker fix would be for them to update the OS so you can set it to only give audio through the headset, regardless of whether or not it was plugged in. Then you could just unplug it and toss it aside if people are driving you nuts.

Does GameStop usually call with delay notifications?

They called tonight but left no message, so I'm ASSUMING it was about Brawl. I've just never received a delay notification over the phone, though.

A stress test would be a fantastic idea. But with the potentially little experience Nintendo has with their online service, I doubt they'd want to risk the ire of the Fan Boys if the service was not 100% perfect and the negative press that would follow.
