Now, if every
other franchise got as many characters as Pokemon got, I'd be fine with that.
I'll just be over here listing off the FE characters I want...
Well, let's see:
Of the franchises currently represented in Brawl (from the
wikipedia entry):
Mario: Five (Mario, Bowser, Peach, Yoshi, and Wario). Potentially seven if Dr. Mario and Luigi return. I'd put fairly good odds on Luigi returning, and fairly bad odds on Dr. Mario, since we're getting Wario.
Donkey Kong: Two (Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong).
Star Fox: One. Potentially two if this Star Wolf rumor is true; I highly doubt that we'll be getting Falco
and Star Wolf, though. At least, I hope we don't.
Zelda: Two (Link & Zelda). Three if you count Sheik; potentially four (five if you count Sheik) if Ganondorf and Young Link return.
Kirby: Three (Kirby, Dedede, and Meta Knight).
Earthbound: Two now (Ness & Lucas).
Pikmin, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Metal Gear, Sonic: One each. Two for Metroid if you count Zero Suit Samus.
So, which franchises are probably going to be lacking? Donkey Kong and Star Fox will, I'm sure. And I'm more than okay with that. Not that DK and Fox aren't cool, but nobody else in either of those franchises is worthy of inclusion. Except maybe Slippy, since, as I mentioned, he could be the Dan of SSBB. Kirby and Zelda look like they're hitting the sweet spot, and Mario has
more than enough already. Frankly, I'm surprised Ness made the cut, if only because of how similar Lucas' moves are to the ones Ness had in Melee. I don't know the Earthbound series at all, though, so I don't know if there were any better choices. Earthbound fans
do deserve at least two characters. Pikmin, Metroid, and Ice Climbers don't really offer any more likely choices. I don't know Kid Icarus, but it sounds like the same situation with that game.
So, that leaves Fire Emblem, Metal Gear, and Sonic. Fire Emblem
does seem like the most likely franchise to receive new characters. Metal Gear and Sonic are both dependant on whether or not Sakurai wants to allow more than one character per third-party franchise. I imagine he does, but you never know.
