Tales from the Pawn Shop(s)!

Finally lucked out. Been to like a billion pawnshops in the area. its interesting to see that if there are two pawnshops close together, one completely destroys the other. anyways found resident evil 2 GH for $3. its sweet cause I've been looking to play this bad boy (trying to catch up on my resident evil goodness) and i can always trade it away/sell it if I'm not a fan.

ok pawn shop finds today:

Two Worlds (i know it blows) X360
Sonic the hedgehog X360

paid 10 bucks (i know not AAA titles but worth it for 10 bucks)

at blockbuster they had a buy a 14.99 and under game get one 14.99 and under free..

not really much of a selection at my blockbuster (its not a game rush) but I picked up

Moto GP 06 X360
Prey X360

paid 15

also while I was there picked up

Bioshock X360

paid 30

I'm not sure how the pawshop around here makes money, some workers sell 360 games for $5 some sell for $15.

They probably give $2 for them if they sell for $5.

It depends on who takes them in, The guys take them in for $5-$10 and sell for $15. The Lady, sells them for $5(must think they are normal Xbox games.

Take some games in and get $10 a piece, then go back when the lady is working and buy them back for $5.

I have thought about it, but she only works on saturdays, and saturday is my day to run to a dieffernt town.

Not a bad day, I was able to snag a few boxed NES games for $3 apiece.

Mega Man 6
Adventure Island III
Tetris
Star Trek the Next Generation

Star Trek was the only one that had the manual, I am selling the Mega Man 6 and Tetris cart because I already have them to recoup the money. I also got

Flashback Sega CD - $2 Complete
Knuckles Chaotix 32x - $2 cart only
Stinger & Kid Icarus - $5 total, both cart only
Crsystalis cart only - $5, From PNT

I already have Crystalis, but for $5, its worth giving to someone because of how great the game is. Its a shame that not many people have played it.

I was in the Cash America Pawnshop on Hwy 80, and all of their games were in great condition! The cases all had manuals and the 99% of the discs looked new - Best part is you can pick up a ton of games for $4 - $10 some still retailing for $59 bucks in stores - If you see 'em stop by and check em out!

Theres a thread here ont hat Crystalis game... if you dont need it, post it there for trade or sale. Someone might pick it up.

A week ago I stopped in a local pawn show and noticed that they had two wavebirds. I asked about them and ended up getting both wavebirds and a copy of metroid prime for $20. Three days later, the wavebirds had sold for a slight ( hehe ) profit on Amazon.

And before someone tells me that I should have traded them here, I tried with the sealed ones that I had a few weeks ago and there wasn't much interest. My profits on flips like that are what fund my gaming habit, so I don't feel bad about it.

And you shouldn't, you did nothing wrong, despite what the people here tell you.

i don't hold much credence to where/how people do business.. sell it for the most profit.. screw everyone else.. (its really how people think anyways)..

hopefully i can run into some wavebirds ( wireless is so not essential for me) so i would definately buy for profit.

i didn't go to any shops today..

but they guy up there toting about a certain pawn shop chain (i presume) all pawnshops (chains or otherwise) are always YMMV as they are always usually independently owned and operated.. there is no pawn shop collective where things go and get dispursed out..

for those that say that flipping is ripping people off, It's totaly the buyers fault in this industry. IMO if flipping is worng then EB/GS would not baround, all they do is flip, but they control the buy price and the sell price, all we can do is find somewhere selling cheap and find a place buying high.

Honestly its the industry's fault of oh, release a game, ok 2 months later its gone from shelves forever. Ebay prices and used prices for the game at Gamestop then skyrocket when game becomes popular because no new copies are around. Its just the way the gaming industry works here. Same with accessories, nintendo could make more wavebirds and sell them for original retail price especially knowing that people are buying Wii's like mad and that most will need a cube controller eventually especially for smash bros. This would stop the hoarding and prices would come back down to reasonable levels.

Also the buyer's drive the market. If you sell a wavebird on ebay, start it at .99 with no reserve anything can happen, its not your choice but if the buyers are willing to pay more for it then its just the market, its not like people are artificially raising the prices of wavebirds. It is the buyer's fault (not the sellers fault if they start at .99) and the "gotta have it now" attitude of a lot of people that raise the prices on ebay. I cannot count how many times I have sold a game used for more than what I paid for it simply because you cannot find any more copies in stores.

If people can profit from something they will, I cannot blame gamestop for keeping market prices though, they don't need some hoarder coming in there and wiping out their stock every day and flipping it on ebay, then we would all be here complaining that gamestop has nothing in stock, ever.

well.. to be honest.. one of the reasons i go to pawn shops is to look for stuff specifically to resell..

if i can purcahse a game for 5-10 bucks that I know I can get at least 40 out of.. thats a great return on investment and really not much time spent (a digital photo, ebay posting)

or even less direct go on amazon marketplace and set your own exorbinent price and who knows..

There is a local store that sells for less than market because they have no idea how to judge the market. I can walk in there trade in 3 crappy Xbox gamea and walk out with $100 of rare PS1 games....its awsome!!!

Best deal I've gotten in a while. Bought it about a week ago at a Cash Converters for $19.99 for the whole lot!!! It was the system only in the case and I asked an employee to get it out of the case. I was gonna pass until I saw the sticker "games/charger included" on the back. So I asked the guy what games it came with. He goes into the back, and 15 minutes later comes back with a zip-loc bag FULL of carts and an AC adapter. Right then and there I said "I'll definately take it!" a little too excitedly.
That day I also got a free copy of Space Invaders for the 2600 and 2 Action Max games for $1.97 each at a Goodwill. Best day in a while. Anyway, after that long-winded intro, I give you, pic: (by the way, the screen's not actually that scratched, the flash makes it look like it was mauled by a cat)

I'm on vacation and had an -amazing- pawn score today:

Got all of these for $12

Vampire Hunter D
Castle in the Sky
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (!)
Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 (!!!)

I had an hunch that Office would be worth something, because I remember seeing that even late 90s versions of Office still sell fairly well. I just looked on eBay and used copies are $100-$200. I almost pooped :whistle2:&

Snow White is out of print and sells for a nice chunk in itself. But that I knew about, so it wasn't a surprise.

I'm pretty sure reselling of S&T editions isn't allowed. Course that doesn't mean you won't get away with it.

Hmm, I'll have to look on the box to see if there are any "not for resale" marks. Sure hasn't stopped dozens of other people, and probably won't stop me. Didn't stop the pawn shop either

Just a question, do all pawn shops sell video games (I know its kind of general but most of the ones I'm looking up near my area seem to state that they mainly deal with jewelry and watches)?

I would assume that not all pawn shops have video games, but all the ones I've been to do. Also most of them have names that include jewelry or are something like "gold silver pawn" never say anything about games.

Found Xbox Live Arcade Compilation disc (the one that came with the Arcade system, Barbie Horse Adventures (Xbox) & Threads of Fate (disc only) for $11 total at pawns today. Passed up GoW2 (no manual) for $6 as well.

was working around Myrtle Beach this past week, and got this haul at the 3 Dick's Pawn shops. They sell on ebay, so I was surprised to find this stuff.

First Store
Purple Nintendo Gamecube Controller $6 down from $7
Chrono Trigger SNES $4.50 down from $5
Gamecube NCAA College Basketball 2K3 $7 down from $8
Gamecube Disc Carrying Case with following games inside (was given the price b/c he said they normally don't take those or discs only since it's harder to display)
-Robotech Battlecry
-Super Smash Bros. Melee
-Dragon Ball Z Saga
-Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
-NBA Street
-Spyro Enter the Dragon
-The Sims
-Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut
-Sonic Heroes
-Need For Speed Underground 2
-Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition
All for ONLY $10!!!!!!!!

I could barely contain how happy I was after seeing NCAA College Basketball 2K3, and then he offered me the carrying case for $10, (I didn't even ask) and I accepted it without trying to seem so excited.
After getting all that, I couldn't wait to get to the second one, but was kinda let down. I bought a DVD (Patriot Extended Cut) $3, Xbox Superman The Man of Steel $5, and Gamecube Enter the Matrix Disc 2 only and Spawn Armageddon for $3. The 3rd was better than the 2nd, but nowhere near the first. Got 13 movies for $2.50 a piece, (Hero, Children of Men, The Last Castle, Collateral, Pulse Unrated, Can't Hardly Wait, Van Wilder Rise of Taj, Grudge Director's Cut, Grudge 2 Unrated, The Break-up, Unfaithful (w/slipcover), Hellboy (2 Disc), Casino Royale (2 Disc w/ slipcover)). He also threw in 2 component video cables for $1, one is about 3, the other either 6 or 12 ft.

just picked up season one of The Wire for $12 and definitely worth it, and Clockwork Knights 2 for the Sega Saturn for $5 (gonna try to flip to make up some of the monthly costs, i freaking hate being a poor college kid)

^ A store here gives $20 for Clockwork Knight 2, but trade only.

I got RE4(GCtoday for $8 not a great deal, but I sold my old copy.
and Conker: Live and Reloaded for $4(great deal.)

Picked up these for $3 each:

House of the Dead (DC, compleye)
Vanishing Point (DC, complete)
Kid Icarus (NES)
Disney Adventures in the MAgic Kingdon (NES, complete)
Digger T. Rock: The Legend of the Lost City (NES, box & cart)
Heavy Shreddin (NES, complete)
Back to the Future (NES, box & cart)

& for $1:
F-Zero (SNES, cart only)

left an Excitebike 64 for $3 as well.

i left those NES games at the pawn on Busch (Cash America). I got boxed Star Trek:TNG, Tetris, Adventure Island 3, and Mega Man 6. I ran out of money for the others. I got Kid Icarus earlier in the day so I left that one.

OK, here is my pawn shop roundup from last week's trip to South Carolina:

Pawn 1:
Got all of these for $12 ($2.40 ea) :
Vampire Hunter D
Castle in the Sky
Peter Pan (Disney)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (!)
Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 (!!!)

Pawn 2:
Einhander PS1, disc only, $4
Parasite Eve, PS1, absolutey mint but missing disc 1, $3**
:ps2: Star Ocean Till the End of Time, $7

Pawn 3:
Hogs of War, PS1, disc only, $5
:ps2: Sega Sports Tennis, $2
:gc: Game Boy Player disc only, $1

Pawn 4:
Final Fantasy VII, disc 3 only, $5
Parasite Eve, disc 1 only, $5 (see ** above, what are the odds?)
Torneko: The Last Hope, PS1, minty, $5
Lunar 2 PS1 soundtrack disc, $3

Pawn 5:
:gc: Resident Evil 4 strategy guide, $5
:ps2: Silent Hill 3, $8 (Has Grand Turismo 3 A-Spec stuck inside instead of the soundtrack)

Pawn 4 (creatively named just "The Pawn Shop") was the dirtiest, sketchiest pawn shop I've ever been to in my life. It looked like an old garage -- Low ceiling, dirty brown carpet with cigarette butts and wood shavings all over the store. Merchandise like tools just sat in piles on the floor.

My heart jumped when I saw the FF7 disc, but sadly, its brothers were missing. I tried to haggle with the lady running the shop, saying "This is only 1 disc out of a 3 disc game, the others are missing." She just shrugged and said "$5." (The same price as the other games...... grrr... still a deal, i suppose.) Torneko, PE, and Lunar 2 OST were nice unexpected finds in that dump.

^ how much do you want for the Gameboy player Disk? I got my GBP stuck to the bottom of a GC i got at a pawn for $25.

 sick with envy. That is really cool!

yah.. so now i got a bit of competition (or at least percieved competition).. i was in today and there were two people in there gandering in the gaming section apparently they have been in before the week prior.. I'll have to start making a point to go in closer to when they open.. and on mondays and thursdays more now..

its cool.. the more people who go in there and not find anything usually means eventually interest will die (as it usually does in cycles..) just usually the "busy" season is coming up with kids needing money so hopefully that doesn't mean that i won't find good deals no mo..

ah well.. heh i don't see too many people doing the yard sale thing.

^ get in good with the owner, if it is a mom and pop store, and you buy a lot, he may hold stuff untill you see it.

I found Rockband for $5 today, got there as the guy was selling it...but TaDa!!! the lady forgot to check for the disc, and of course it wasnt in there :(

to sinnbox,

well i am "in good" with the owner, i get fairly good deals on my own.. they would never hold anything but they do let me in on when said items to go on sale..

like i said with the "percieved".. i'm looking for 360 games but many people around here are stuck on last gen stuff so really i shouldn't worry but yeah competition is good.. like i said.. usually i show up there before most people go there.

Thats cool. gettng there early is always the best answer...sadly the only store around here that I can't get to early gets the best and most rare stuff. but they will hold stuff if they think i will be interested.

Picked these up today:

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter (PS2, disc only)-$2
.Hack Infection (w/ bonus DVD, discs only)-$1
Area 51 (PS1)-$2
G-Police (Ps1)-$2

is JFA worth $10? I see it at pawns all the time for $8.

Which one did you find Zelda at? I hate Zelda but like cheap newer ds games.

In Pasco, the Phoenix Wright is the third one, I thought it was called JFA. I have been having to branch out with the Tampa pawns being milked of late:)
