The Al Snow Wrestling Thread

I'll pretty much second what everyone else has said. Flair shouldn't wrestle Sting, its the wrong forum and not built up enough. If this was WCW I'd be all for it.

I also agree that this is a good idea for both Flair and WWE, it does allow Flair to do all the bookings he would like and still have WWE pull him in for whatever else they need him for.

So, please pass me by... nothin' new to see here.

How have we not mentioned this before? I saw it at Blockbuster last night, and I'm tempted to rent it. Stars Rey Misterio and Leyla, and centers around a crazed luchador murderer. Awesome.
I don't understand the U.S. title. The Mexican Porn Massacre? Are they going to add porn into the movie? Will we get to see Rey Sr.'s flying burrito?

That was the working title...the actual US title is Wrestlemaniac

I saw it awhile back when it was on sale at Amazon but I just couldn't convince myself to get it.
Okay, everyone not named KaneRobot. ;)

I'd much prefer seeing Ric Flair in Ring of Honor than TNA. TNA would just be embarrassing. Sure, if they acquired Flair for a match, Sting and Flair would draw, but would it be a long-term solution to improving their ratings? I think not.
I disagree with this (at least in theory). What a company should do is take a match like this, then build the rest of the card around increased ratings. So, you would come to see Flair versus Sting, but you would build other matches/feuds during that PPV to bring you back. In a perfect world, you go in talking about Flair/Sting, but you leave talking about Somoa Joe, AJ, etc

Now, would TNA do this right, probably not. Would ROH do it right, I don't know. I have a hunch they could get a bigger boost out of something like this, but do they have the financial backing to go big time, if the opportunity presented itself?

While it is Flair's choice, I'd rather he stay retired. So many have retired and come back when they were a shadow of their former selves (Terry Funk, Mick Foley, etc.). One more match, in the grand scheme of things is meaningless since he has already done it all.

Flair and Undertaker, imo, are the two guys who have the most to lose by coming back to wrestle once they're retired, and I'm pretty sure both of them realize it. Flair as a manager in ROH would be pretty awesome so long as he doesn't end up competing in a match, but I don't think even his name could get any kind of huge expansion for the company -- assuming they want it.

I agree with both of those, Taker and Flair are my two staples of wrestling. Since I started watching in 1993 I have always said the Undertaker is one of my favorite wrestlers and Flair was one of the driving points that brought me to watch WCW (the other main point was Razor Ramon was one of my favorite wrestlers and I flipped and saw him on WCW and flipped my shit). So seeing either of them come back again once they retire would just be like Jordan going to the Wizards, quickly forgotten for the sake of saving the legacy. Flair had the best send off WWE could have gone with (minus that stupid as song they used), and I'm assuming that whenever Taker hangs up his boots, hat, and jacket that he will get the same type of treatment which I think he deserves. With Flair's send-off I know I'm not the only one that shed tears at the sight of one of the greats calling it a day. Having him come back as a wrestler would be useless, but I agree with promo's or managing, he could be useful to ROH or any other indy show trying to get some spotlight.

Note: Sorry about the rant.

Flair as a manager in ROH would be a huge step down for him - I think that at most, they'd use him in a Foley-esque role where he's just there to put over new guys on the mic. Flair's already come out of retirement a couple of times, but given the massive send-off for his most recent one, it would be seem like a huge insult to have Flair come back for a match.

More on Flair's departure, and info about Mick Foley possibly leaving after Summerslam because his contract will be up -
http://www.prowrestling.net/artman/publish/powellsblog/article1002329.shtml

There was a similar deal with JBL when he became a commentator, and his deal expired pretty soon after becoming one - he was re-signed quickly, and I'd expect that to happen here, especially after that fantastic promo on SD that showed he can put guys over in a somewhat active role while still acting as a commentator.

Some of my favorite Summerslam highlights -
1991: Bret winning the IC belt, the wedding reception being interrupted by Roberts, the Mountie going to jail, flipping off the cops, and being propositioned by a guy who loves the way leather feels against his body, and Ricky Steamboat selling a beating by the Warlord by trying to crawl up the Warlord and strike him with feeble blows are my highlights.

1992: LOD entrance with motorcycles, Heenan mocking Rocko, DiBiase rocking an awesome white/gold version of his outfit, the Natural Disasters doing a fantastic job of playing the Rock 'n Roll Express against the Beverly Brothers, everything involving Savage/Warrior and Hennig/Flair, and the Bulldog/Bret match ruled.

1994: Blayze/Nakano opened my eyes to how great women's wrestling could be, and Razor regaining the IC belt was cool.

1995: HBK/Razor II was fantastic, Diesel doing a plancha on Mabel, and Horrowitz pimping HIS NEW T-SHIRT were my favorite parts of this show. Hakushi-Kid was good stuff, but not very memorable.

1998: The Venis/Brown opener made me realize how good D'Lo was, Rock/HHH in a ladder match made it clear that they were both going to be big stars in the future, while Austin/Taker had 'Taker do a legdrop off the top through an announce table on Austin that was pretty damn amazing given his size.

1999: The Lion's Den match was pretty good, and the Jarrett PPV opener served as a foreshadowing of every TNA PPV main event ending forever.

2000: Benoit/Jericho was fantastic, Shane's big dive was memorable, and the main event was fantastic despite Angle being knocked loopy right when it started.

2002: PURE SPORTS BUILD! with Brock and the Rock led to their fantastic match, which, like Flair vs. Sting in '88 basically made a guy an instant main event attraction in one night. HBK's comeback was amazing, as he didn't appear to lose a step after a long layoff. Rey/Angle was a fantastic opener that showed that Angle could wrestle anyone, regardless of size, and have a great match with them. Jericho/Flair was great, as was Edge/Eddie - the show was basically wally-to-wall great matches with the only exception coming to mind being Test/Taker, and I don't recall anything bad about the match.

2003: Hunter killing Goldberg in the Chamber despite the fans wanting to see him win the title there, and Hunter being so injured that he could barely do anything in the ring.

2005: Like the 2002 Summerslam, this was a pretty great show from start to finish - Benoit beatng Jordan quickly was great fun, Hogan/HBK was a testament to the greatness of Michaels and his wacky boot sell is the stuff of legend. The Eddie/Rey ladder match somehow managed to be great despite a ton of shit getting fucked up, including a sunset flip powerbomb. Orton/'Taker was good, and Jericho/Cena was fantastic, although I'm not quite sure if it was better than their match the next night.

In brief, I will add Ultimate Warrior defeating Rick Rude in a Steel Cage match at SummerSlam 1990, and Bret Hart capturing the Intercontinental title from Mr. Perfect, Virgil beating Ted DiBiase, and Big Boss Man sending The Mountie to jail at SummerSlam 1991.

Random Fact: Virgil/Vincent also holds a win over Bill Goldberg/Bill Gold/He Who Fears Chris Jericho. He stopped the streak before it even began. ;)

The only way I can support Flair coming back to wrestle is if he turns heel and has one match to capture the NWA title one more time.

As nice as his sendoff was, I'd much rather have him have his dream of going out the way he wanted to.

Adamle made a handicap match- Jericho and JBL vs. Punk. Whoever gets the pin or submission on the heel team gets the title shot at SS, but if Punk wins, neither guy does. Then Kofi pinned Burchill clean for the IC title, leading into this here Women's title match.

Oddly enough, with Adamle trying to do new a creative things I was expecting the tag match for both belts, but figured it'd be Paul and Katie Lea. So with the ambiguous wording, are we going to see the winner be both Women's and Intercontinental champion? The hell? Grisham is a backstage interviewer on Raw and a commentator on ECW?

Thanks, doesn't sound like I missed much. Well, besides the continued burial of Punk by making him continue to look like a fluke champion.

Jericho in tights BOOOOOOOO

- edit  Loving the Muta facepaint in the front row.
Did they just kill Kane's storyline?
I don't think so.

They seem to be building to Kane having some mental issues which will lead to a mix of normal Kane and masked Kane.

Myke, I was looking at your sig (which was mine at another board a year or so ago, coincidentally) and the dancing/donkey punching synced up perfectly with John Cena's entrance music just now.

lol..

Cole: WWE Summerslam is brought to you by Street Kings, available on DVD and blu-ray high def August 19!
Lawler: Uhh.. Summerslam's on the 17th, Michael
Cole: I know that.. but the DVD comes out the 19th
Lawler: Oh.. don't confuse me!

Or something like that
As cheesy as the whole thing is, I kinda like Adamle as the GM. He's getting better on the mic.
I actually agree. I have grown to, gasp, like Adamle. :whistle2:#

While we're remembering Summerslam matches, I'd like to mention RVD/Jeff Hardy (though I don't think it was as good as their Invasion bout) and an oft-forgotten opener from 1989 with The Brainbusters (Blanchard and Anderson) against The Hart Foundation.
How has RAW been tonight?
I tuned in at about 10:30 p.m. EST. So, I don't have a real opinion on it yet.

I do like how Ted Jr. and Cody are being put over as competitive heels, though. Cena and Batista have put them over nicely, thus far. :applause:

I love the Brain Busters. Of course, I wasn't fond of them when I was a kid, but had a chance to review their matches, and it was good soup. This could be my undying love for Arn speaking, though.

I was far too young to really enjoy them, but man, the spike piledriver was friggin' brutal when I was a kid. It's a shame they didn't stay in the WWF longer, because there's a bunch of teams I'd have loved to seen them face.

God dammit. DiBiase and Rhodes got the Cade and Murdoch treatment- New tag team, just debuting (well, DiBiase is new; Rhodes has been there a year) and they drop the titles after having them for barely a month. I enjoyed the show as a whole, but the ending left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

I remember being pissed when they beat Demolition (yes, I liked Demolition when I was a kid). I also remember being in awe of their finishing move, like I was with Demolition's decapitation leg drop.

WWE should have turned Batista heel tonight instead of sacrificing Plumber, Inc.

I was initially very pissed when it happened, but edited my post when I realized, "Well, this --is-- WWE."

Raw thoughts - Not a great show overall, as it had a lot of filler on it, but the Jericho/JBL vs. Punk match was good stuff, even though I'm not a fan of the ending, which made JBL look weak, didn't help Punk, and made Jericho look stupid as well. Jericho wearing trunks was surprising, as I don't recall him ever wearing them before.

The other main event, with Batista and Cena snagging the tag gold from Priceless had off the charts heat at time thanks to Cena and Batista being in this, which added a lot when Batista teased a turn on Cena by not tagging him and then going to the other side of their corner's ringpost.

While the whole "tag partners who don't get along, BUT ARE TAG CHAMPS!" thing is beyond played out, the crowd didn't seem to mind it, and it could work at helping Cody and DiBiase be seen as stars if they eventually beat Batista and Cena for the belts (which sounds a hell of a lot more impressive than beating Hardcore Holly for the belts in a 2-on-1 handicap match).

The show-closing pissing contest with each guy taking turns to see who would get a bigger crowd response, and then going with more elaborate posing at it wore on was a lot of fun - it was great to hear the crowd so enthusiastic for each guy after minutes of this stuff (and after a largely bland show).

The HBK announcement for Summerslam was good, and should lead to either more intrigue for a Jericho-HBK match at Unforgiven, or a possible short-term retirement angle, leading to them building up the next Jericho-HBK match for a bigger PPV like Survivor Series.

I dug the Regal-Noble stuff, but my favorite part of that segment was Michael Cole stating that Noble and Layla HAD A CONVERSATION exclusively for WWE.com. How nice of them.

Adamle as GM ruled tonight, with him comparing himself to Ronald Reagan, then having the heels try to curry favor with him because he's such a putz, then he wishes Steph well with her new baby before saying MAZELTOV! So, so great. And then Santino ruled when Adamle said there was only room for one more title match, and it was between the IC and Women's titles, and that Beth would want him to be IC champion, but she wanted a women's title match, but he didn't want to be women's champion...fantastic stuff.

All of the Adamle Original stuff was amusing tonight, with him making goofy stips then adding more wackiness on top of them. Unlike TNA, this was great, because the stips were clearly explained beforehand, and played off as byproducts of a moron, while in TNA, they're played straight, leading to an expectation for fans to genuinely care about shit like the Suicide Stampede or the Reindeer Head Ladder Match.

This show did a great job of building up Batista vs. Cena, with excellent video packages highlighting the strengths of both men, and building up tension between them throughout the show and into their tag title match. They also did a good job of building up the Cell match on this show by putting together a different video package that puts more context on the statements made by Foley and Edge by playing clips of Edge being a wuss and Foley going through the cell, respectively.

Quotes -
Adamle - Hello, my name is Mike Adamle (fans boo), I don’t want to take up too much of your time… (fans cheer) I have some things I want to say (fans chant you suck). There was a man who was once not very good - he worked in a circus-like atmosphere - Ronald Reagan is who I’m talking about. He went from a B-rated movie actor to one of the greatest Presidents the U.S has ever seen - the point I’m trying to make is that first impressions can be deceiving. He acted with a monkey - I accidentally called Jeff Hardy, Jeff “Harvey”. Everyone makes mistakes, the important thing is that we grow with them. I wasn’t the greatest announcer in ECW and some of you won’t let that go - there’s even a poll on the WWE.com boards asking for my resignation, and you know what? That’s your right as an American, but that’s not an America I want to be a part of. I want to be part of the land of opportunity, where a man like me who stands five feet nine, can have 7 years in the NFL. That’s why I made King and Cole versus the tag champions last week - I’m sorry that didn’t work out, but I’m not sorry for trying to interject some excitement in the championship match. How many want to see one championship match tonight? How many want to see two championship matches tonight?! WELL GUESS WHAT, WE’VE GOT THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS TONIGHT! DiBiase and Rhodes will defend their title against John Cena and Baitista!
JBL - Excuse me, excuse me. Mr. Adamle, I want to be the first to congratulate you as the new GM of Raw. I agree 100% - first impressions can be deceiving. For years, people thought I was a beer drinkin’, bar fightin’ Texan, and now they realize that I’m a self-made millionare. I’m NYC’s favorite son, and this week, Fortune magazine has I and my beautiful wife on the cover. Mike, YOU’RE A WINNER, just like me, JBL. What you announced last week was a winning announcement! Cena vs. Batsita - WHAT A BLOCKBUSTER. I want you to go 2 for 2 and announce JBL vs. CM Punk for the world heavyweight championship!
Adamle - Thank you for those kind words…
Jericho- Wait, before you make a decision, which will I’m sure be a wise one…
JBL - This doesn’t concern you!
Jericho - Yes it does - I put Michaels out. I DESERVE the title match!
JBL- Mike, you wanna talk about the Bash? I DEFEATED JOHN CENA. JERICHO DEFEATED A GUY WITH ONE GOOD EYE - THERE’S NO COMPARISON. Mike, we’re ball players here!
Jericho - I’m not in JBL’s league, I’M IN A LEAGUE OF MY OWN!
Adamle - Gentlemen, knock it off… It would be very easy for me to make JBL vs. Jericho vs. Punk and take the easy way out, but I’m against the easy, I’m about the right - Jericho and JBL teaming up against Punk, if you or you defeat Punk, you will get a world title match at Summerslam. How’s THAT sound, baby!? Ya like that? Oh guys, one other thing, if Punk wins, THEN NEITHER OF YOU GETS A WORLD TITLE MATCH! Have fun tonight, gentlemen!
Cole - ADAMLE’S IN CHARGE!?
Cole - We want to thank all of you in the WWE UNIVERSE FOR MAKING RAW THE NUMBER ONE-RATED SHOW IN ALL OF TELEVISION among teens.
Adamle - Stephanie, it’s great to work for a company that thinks outside the box. Congratulations on the new child. MOZALTOV!
Santino - Congratulations yourself, Mike Adam-ale! Beth and I each think we should have title matches at SUMMERSLAM! She’s a former women’s champion, and I’m a former Intercontinental champion! IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE!
Adamle - Yes, it does…
Santino - I want what the Glamazon wants- TO SEE ME AS INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION!
Beth - Make it a women’s title match!
Santino - Women’s title?! I don’t want to be women’s champion, Beth Phoenix.
Adamle - I have an idea - Beth and Santino vs. Mickie and Kofi Kingston - winner takes all! How does that sound!?
Santino - I think that sounds great - MIKE ADAM-ALE, it’s great to have another Italian on the team! PREGO!
Lawler - It’s an Adamle Original - Jericho and JBL vs. Punk - if either man pins Punk, they get a title shot at Summerslam, but if Punk wins, NEITHER gets a title shot!
Cole - We understand that earlier today, Layla was involved in a conversation with Jamie Noble EXCLUSIVELY FOR WWE.COM!
(Layla dances)Regal - Pardon me dear, but I have something to say… I just thought I’d better come out and remind everyone of who I am - I am William Regal AND I AM YOUR KING! I earned that title through winning the 2008 KOTR tournament. As your king, it is my duty…(Noble comes out)
Cole - What did Noble come down here for? TO DEFEND LAYLA!?
Lawler - Well…duh!
Cole - Mr. Whtney, I presume! JBL talked about Fortune Magazine does a piece on him, but it’s really not true.
King - You’re not implying that he’s like K-Fed to her Britney Spears, are you?
Cole - MAYBE!
Cole - This is a most UNIQUE matchup - it’s JBL AND JERICHO AS A TEAM, BUT NOT REALLY! Punk has been called a paper champion, a transitional champion by JBL and others…
Adamle - Guys, I forgot to mention one thing - this match has 10 minutes allotted - if it goes longer, then it becomes a triple threat. Good luck, everyone!
Fan Signs - JBL is Poopy
Penelope is an Overweight Girl
Kelly Kelly is Sexy Sexy
Cole - WOW, THAT WAS EXCITING! Adamle…original! Try saying that fast!
HBK - I have a re-evaluation with my doctors the Friday before Summerslam. I plan on coming to Summerslam and publicly announcing what the future holds. For the first time in my life, I’m going to listen to my doctors. If they tell me I can compete on a limited basis, then that’s what I’m gonna do, but if there’s some risk to my eye or my sight then I will… I’m prepared to walk away. I have thoroughly enjoyed performing in the WWE universe throughout my career, but there’s one thing I enjoy more - my family. Jericho says that I should look back on my career and spend my time loving my wife and children, and I think that’s what I should do.
Kane - I’ve been in a bad place lately…I’m better now. He’s not alive…he’s dead…
(Batista hype video airs)Cena - After that, I, you, and everyone else can see what it’s like to face Batista inside a wrestling ring. We were all surprised by the announcement of Mike Adamle as Raw GM, but you can be Mike Adamle, Jack Tunney, or an idiot off the street - you can see Cena vs. Batista as a blockbuster. At WrestleMania 21, Batista and I won titles, and I thought about facing him one day. Then I faced Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania and people said that Batista and the Undertaker stole the show! THE TIME IS COMING UP! And to Mike Adamle, the Adamle Original, wanting to be cute, not just letting us prepare for the GREATEST SHOWDOWN OF OUR TIME! We have a chance to be world tag team champions. Adamle knows that either we’re gonna win and become champions or lose and tear each other to pieces. I sure hope we win, but tonight, I’m ready for anything.
Adamle - I’ve got an ADAMLE ORIGINAL - we’re gonna try to find out what’s in Kane’s bag, and if he doesn’t give it up, we’ll try to make him.
Cole - WWE Summerslam brought to you by Street Kings, out on DVD and Blu-Ray August 19th.
King - Summerslam’s on August 17th…
Cole - Yes, but Street Kings comes out the 19th…
King - I didn’t know that - don’t confuse me.

Good lord is Dale Gagner ever horrid as the ring announcer for these '90 AWA shows - he just called a taped fist match a "taped tit match". Okay, that's kinda awesome.

So, they gave the "odd couple" the tag belts AGAIN?

Nobody ever goes by Jim Cornette's 7-year maxim any validity, but it's fuckin truth, yo.

There's no true English replay- not in America, anyway. But you can watch A.M. Raw at 11 P.M. pacific time Saturday night (I have no idea why it's on then, either) or if you get Telemundo, the Spanish version is on Sunday afternoons at 3 P.M. I sometimes watch that to re-enjoy the show and bone up on my Spanish.
