The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)
Okay, I think I'll cancel my repair order.
The thing is, I registered my Xbox right before it went out on me. Is this going to be any problem when I return it? Is there a way to unregister it?
What's the easiest way to transfer my HD saves from the old xbox to the new one?
It won't be a problem that you registered it. Don't worry about that. How many saves do you have? There's really no way to transfer saves from a 20GB to a 20GB other than using a memory card. If you don't have one or don't want to buy one, I'd just ask if you could keep the hard drive or say fuck the saves and just get a new one.

Okay cool. I have some solid saves on Fable and Halo. Lol put quite some time into my Xbox already :).
It is a 60 GB Xbox. I think my brother might have a memory card back home..

You couldn't have that many saves if it only lasted a week. I'd man up and take the hit (unless you feel like you progressed so far in a game that you wouldn't want to re-do it).
So I just opened my 360 Arcade and have an HDMI cable that I use with my PS3 that I figured would work. I connected initially with the HDMI and things were fine, and then it asked me to update. It restarted and my TV said it was an "unreadable connection" or something of the sort.

For now I have the A/V cables plugged in and I can't figure out why the HDMI cable won't work. Can anyone help me out? I tried reading the xbox.com links, but they keep saying Xbox 360 HD AV cables. Do I need to buy a special cable?

I just tested with my roommates HDTV and it worked. I have an Element TV, I don't know the exact information on it, but how is it possible that it worked before the update on my TV, and now it says "unsupported mode" on my TV?
I have no input. It sounds really frustrating. It's hard to say if it's a problem with your Xbox or your TV. You said it worked before the update. Theoretically, all HDMI cables should be the same. They should either work or not.

If not, small memory units are not particularly expensive, and they're often clearanced. Sorry you're having trouble, though. That's frustrating stuff. I think we've all learned a thing or two about faulty hardware this generation.

Alternately, if you dont have a memory card, just buy one used from GS, transfer your files, then return it to GS within the 7 day grace period.

few simple questions

What type of warranty does the 360 come with

Would it be wise to buy the extended 2 year that is in the box for 60 bucks

my credit card doubles warranties so is it worth buying the 60 buck one

1 year warranty + 3 yeas RROD warranty
I'm having the same issue-- I returned my 360 due to issues with the drive thinking it was supposed to be ejecting discs when it wasn't-- they shipped me back the same Xbox (Same serial number, they must've just replaced the drive and mobo).. I assume I got a new mobo because I had to go through initial setup again (language, country, etc choices), but had my Live account on a memory card and the same HD... but it won't let me play any games offline. (stuff works fine signed into XBox Live)

I've tried deleting them and redownloading, and just redownloading to get the new license key, and no go...

We must have gotten the same person repairing our units and forgetting to do the license swap or something. I have it on a wireless network but the router is in a different room and if I forget to turn on the wireless (I only leave it on when I need it) I'd like to at least be able to play the XBLA games.

I don't want to use the transfer tool, and I'm not even sure I could, since I got back the same unit!! (Which is even more puzzling why this is happening although I bet the new motherboard is throwing things off)

I guess I get to call support in the morning.. :( I was afraid this would happen...
To follow up on my own message, in case anyone is following. Called Xbox support. They seemed to understand the problem and acknowledged the repair center screwed this one up. But they won't do anything to transfer the licenses without me taking the hit for the once a year transfer. Even when I pointed out that the DRM transfer tool specifically says that you don't need to do it with a repaired or refurbished console, they said they couldn't do anything.

Asked to speak to a supervisor. He agreed the repair center screwed up by not transferring the licenses. But then he told me I didn't get the same Xbox back and they must have peeled the serial number sticker off the old one and put it on a refurb (!!! -- yes, I admit I probably got a refurbed mobo but now he's just insulting my intelligence). He said there was no reason redownloading wasn't fixing it but that there was nothing they could do.

Off to write some letters, this is BS. I really don't want to burn my once-every-12-months transfer on something that THEY didn't do.

so it would just be a waste of 60 bucks in buying that 2 year warranty since my credit card doubles

so i should have 2 years (going to call up my CC company tomorrow to make sure)

My brother just got a 360 and is a FPS snob (has to have a keyboard and mouse)

I was looking for game ideas from the 360 back catalouge.

Guitar Hero II or III
Rock Band 1 or 2

How old is he?

Due to recent developments in the world of the Xbox 360, I seriously need to update this thread to match the times. Also, because some dumb motherfucker attached a receipt to this thread, I'm not just going to update the OP and let this roll on - I'll have to open up an entirely new thread. No worries, though, as everything will still be the same. Although I have a few things in mind already, the question I pose for those vaguely/extensively familiar with the OP is:

What do you feel should be included with the next update of this thread? What new things should be added? What old things should be deleted? What needs work?

Obviously, things such as newer systems, the "popular games" section, the Arcade games list, etc. will all be updated, but I'm looking for more.
I can't believe how much that receipt pisses you off.
Who the fuck spends $94.40 on 2 copies of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, the Bee Movie game for the PS2, Golden Compass, and Power Rangers Super Legends then turns around and posts it in the 360 forums on the thread that is supposed to help people who want/have an Xbox 360? It's some real gay garbage - especially since mods are powerless to remove it.

Wow! I wish I'd seen this reciept. I dont think one piece of paper has drawn this much ire out of anyone since the Emanicpation Proclaimation. :)

As for updates, revision history of the xbox, including how to spot a jasper and an in-depth explanation of the 3 year warranty and its ins and outs. Cheap places to buy live and point cards would help too.

I've always been able to find a deal on live cards from buy and amazon, don't know about retail stores though. As for the point cards, I thought its always the same price.

Usually, but recently people mentioned them being 14.99 at Target B&M and often times popping up at 17.99 at Amazon or somewhere else.

Yeah, you can certainly get deals on points. They just don't seem to pop up as often. I know that, from time to time, I have seen 4000 points for like $43 on Buy. I picked a card up once at around that price.

is it worth buying the 2 year warranty

I'd say no, because it already comes with, say, a one year warranty. Even if you send your Xbox360 back to Microsoft, chances are, you won't get your same system back, just someone elses' that got fixed. If you send your 360 back, you will get an additional like 3-5 months warranty. So, the extra 2 year warranty is kind of useless if yours breaks before it because you'll get more warranty time.

This sku comparison chart may come in handy:

Actually, that doesnt look like a purchase receipt, it looks like a trade-in receipt. I guess someone was bragging about their flips?:whistle2:s

But in any case, you're right. It has no place in the 360 threads.

I have an odd question. I accidentally washed my memory card in the washer, and I've moved since then. So I haven't unpacked my 360, but does anyone think the memory card will work?
Sci Fi stuff
Prey
And yeah achievement points on how easy medium or hard they are to get as well. thanks. :)
Pretty easy, majority you get by just beating the levels.

Do they make jasper elite systems? I only saw a couple arcade systems that are jaspers but I want an elite. Or what is the best current system for an elite, like whats the manufacturer date I should look at for, for a newer elite.

It sounds like you're less likely to get a Jasper, the more expensive the unit...just because they sell through the cheaper units faster (especially this time of year). You can always just get a 120GB drive with an Arcade model if you want. Probably not much different in price even if you have to add other accessories.

Well for everyone waiting around for a Jasper, here is the info on how to figure out if the Xbox 360 does indeed have the new chipset:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/10/inside-an-xbox-360-jasper-ben-heck-dissects-the-mythical-consol/

The Xbox 360 box has a hole at the top of it where the bar code of the console is visible. Clerks usually scan this when you buy one. What you need to do it look at the lower left corner of this box. If you peer closely you can make out at least half of the voltage/amperage rating of the unit. The # of amps used by the 12 volt rail is the key to determining which console it is. The photos below show this in detail.

falcon_find.jpg

14.2 amps equals a Falcon unit (65nm CPU, 90nm GPU). Please keep in mind there's nothing wrong with having one of these, I play mine a lot and it's fine. You might not be able to see the whole voltage listing just through the peep-hole, but you should at least be able to see if a 14.2A or 12.1A is just to the left of the "5V".

jasper_find.jpg

12.1 amps equals a Jasper unit (65nm CPU, 65nm GPU). This voltage rating is also listed above the power input, but of course you can't see that when it's in the box.

There has been a lot of discussion about lot #'s, power supply ratings, and things of that nature being used to find Jaspers. I have found those to be unreliable. For instance, this Jasper was lot #0842X. However at Circuit City today I saw a 0843X Arcade unit, but it was 14.2 amps.

Also this particular Jasper came with a 175W power supply (like the Falcons used). They are probably trying to use up all the older PSU's and thus it was packed with the unit. Keep in mind that even if this Xbox only needs 150W it's not a issue to power it with a 175W supply, just like people who put 700W PSU's in their PC's for no apparent reason.
Happy Hunting!

So my monitor has only a DVI input. Is it possible to connect the xbpx360 to the monitor??

Also does havign an LCD monitor mean i have a monitor in HD?

MS / HARTE HANKS

i got one of those 20 HD and 3 month promo xbox live is doing for 30 bucks

sort of shocked a 20 Hard drive and a 3 month xbox live card only weighs 1 pound

If it came UPS, it's linked to whoever the user on the UPS station it shipped from. The weight on the label could be anything - UPS will bill them on the correct weight.

I'm thinking about selling my current Xbox 360 to a friend and then buying a new Jasper Xbox 360 Arcade. I'm using a 120GB HDD on my current 360, and if I do buy the arcade, I'll have to transfer the license for all of my XBLA/DLC to the new Xbox right?

Is this very hard to do, or does it not even work that way?

*edit*
never mind, I found out how to do it.

It's not hard it just takes a long time. The feature has been around for awhile now so they probably walk you through it step by step, the Official Xbox Magazine had an article on it as well. Just switch the license and then re-download everything from your download history. (I did this when a while ago when they did not have the transfer tool online and just redownloding worked for me.) I seriously think they need a re-download all button though.

Regarding Jasper-remember that the AMPs required can be wrong, and it can ship with an older power supply too.

My Falcon claims it uses the same AMPs as the Zephyr, and has the old power supply, but it is a Falcon. Same thing's happening with some Jaspers.

Weirdly, Microsoft's even been shipping some new ZEPHYRS, and there's apparently some version of Falcon without HDMI...though I wonder if that's for some other market...must be. (Opus I guess.)

Plus they need a way to just list stuff you've purchased, versus including demos too.
