Thrift Store Thread 2012
^^^Post 136. That is the DK tape I was describing.
Haha missed that. I think I overpaid $0.99 a piece.
These games were actually pawn shop finds.

DSC00326.jpg

For a grand total of $6.43!:hot:

These were finds at a Good Will but not sure what that Donkey Kong tape is any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! Great find!! Xenogears, Final Fantasy 7 and Azure Dreams!!!:applause: Wish my local shops have games... i hardly get to see any!

The only Nintendo VHS worth $0.99 is the Starfox 64 video, mostly because it is awesome. It's worthless in the conventional sense.

I remember getting the Starfox tape from Blockbuster and watching it like 60 times.

Wow, seriously, I remember having this video, and it was and still is phenomenal in all it's cheesiness. Maybe it's my nostalgia glasses, but there is no doubt in my mind that I would put Star Fox 64 on my list of the 5 greatest games I've ever played, and watching this video also reminded me of how painfully underrated and forgotten the Nintendo 64 has always been. Man, remember when Nintendo didn't suck so much? Where did they go wrong?

Grimace Beanie Baby - $.29
WP_000009.jpg

3 books x $.49 apiece - $1.47

Moongate
Rainbow Six
Rogue Angel: Footprints

Total - $1.76 + tax

I'll probably be going back here for more books. Most paperbacks are $.49 and most hardcover are $.99. The only exceptions seem to be popular series like Harry Potter, Twilight, Warriors (unfortunately; I didn't know this series was that popular and I wanted to buy them but they were a few bucks apiece)
Man, remember when Nintendo didn't suck so much? Where did they go wrong?
I don't think they went wrong at all. They still come out with some pretty fantastic games.
Man, remember when Nintendo didn't suck so much? Where did they go wrong?
How exactly do they 'suck' nowadays? If anything, I think they were the smart ones this gen, since the Wii sold shitloads early in the gen and passed by the 360 and PS3 with ease. I just have to wonder how much a replacement controller is gonna cost for the WiiU if they all have that huge screen on them.
Maybe spmahn is referring to the god awful amount of shovelware that was cranked out for the Wii this generation.
Right. Because there were no bad games for any previous Nintendo system.

spmahn is just trolling because s/he loves selling online but hates shipping packages.

Been outta the loop for a while. Recently started checking out thrift stores again. Got these today:
100_0243.jpg

.99 cents a piece! I'm a sucker for these old PC games with the terrible box art. All are complete with floppy disks, maps and cases. I'll probably sell them, since I lack the ability to play them. :( (A quick ebay lookup reveals that Robin Hood sells for a cool 40ish.) Not a bad day.

Nice. I have the Robin Hood one too, and I remember all but Rise of Dragons.

What?
That box art is pimp!
Box art today is terrible.
I love finding old boxed PC games and get so depressed when I think about all my old PC boxes that got thrown away (not by my hand, mind you!) over the years.

I ot 2 Sega Saturn controllers for $3.99 a piece today, there's been about 7 Saturn sports games sitting in the glass case for over a week for $8 a piece, they were all gone today and the controllers were there so i grabbed those suckers.

Passed on an NES console with 2 controllers and rf for $10, i would have grabbed it but i've got 4 of them sitting in my closet

Made out pretty good today at a local thrift store. Bought a few N64 games; Mario Golf, Starfox 64 & Ocarina of Time for $2.99 each, all cart only. Got a Sealed copy Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness for $12.99. A sealed copy of Star Wars Math: Jabba's Game Galaxy for the PC for $4.99.

I learned a long time ago not to argue with Nintendo fanboys since you never come out on top, but to keep it brief, I feel Nintendo long ago abandoned their core fanbase in favor of the quick and easy sell to the casual consumer. While yes, they have had some fantastic games this generation, they are few and far in between, and even the best of them rely far too heavily on gimmicks to enhance gameplay, rather than actual substance. The fact that they've abandoned the core gamer market has come back to bite them in the ass and it's evident that once the novelty wore off on the Wii, it dropped hard and it dropped fast, and this WiiU thing just looks like more of the same.

But anyways, let's keep this on topic.

ya really, nintendo has always been focused on kids for their profits

the shovelware is insane on the wii and ds has a lot too, kids and parents buy it because they dont know any better

nintendo i think just got lucky with the nes and snes, the tech and the time period that those fell into just worked to spawn all the good third party games that everyone refers back to and remembers "the good days of nintendo" for, but really the credit needs to go to the third party software developers, they are all still out there you just have to find which system they are making their games on, etc. - it does suck that theres so many systems that they are spread out on though

everyone thats grown up needs to accept that nintendo has and will always be a kids "toy" business

i wish sega came back into hardware and made some crazy platform that handled 2d/3d not geared towards kids or just "arcades" which was the fail of the dreamcast

oh and they would need a kick ass anti piracy setup, that also killed the dreamcast

Ladies Ladies, take it to Gamespot's System Wars Forum. Stop filling up pages with non Thrift Store Finds!.........I am going out today so this post might not be a waste of space as well. :p

Goodwill - Vagrant Story Black Label (Case, No Manual) 2.99

They had a Star Ocean as well, but only Disc 2. I was pretty bummed.

:lol:Nintendo fanboy. I'm not a 'fanboy' of any console, whether this gen or any gaming generation. I've always bought the system where the games I wanted to play were.

I just find it funny that folks will rip on Nintendo for being 'gimmicky' with the Wii's motion controls, yet not think the exact same of Microsoft's Kinect or Sony's Move. Not to mention ripping on them for the shovelware, when in fact every console has shovelware/garbageware. How many mini game compilations have been released on PSN/XBL that would typically fall under the 'shovelware' designation on the Wii?

When the current gaming gen launched and hardware prices were 2x that of launch for last gen, I just cringed. Gaming, for me, has ALWAYS been a hobby that is a casual pasttime for me and something I don't wanna go broke by continuing to enjoy. That's why I waited till 2-3 years into this gen before buying a system, since the 360 and PS3 had had some price drops since they launched and thus made it more affordable for me.

I don't need some HD supermegaultra console that does everything under the sun. Just gimme one that plays games and does it well without failing every six months from normal use.

Haven't been to the Goodwill here in a little while, but this thread reminded me about how my friend found an 80GB PS3 without cables for $50 last summer. He brought it home, used his cables, and we found a ton of porn on the internet history from the previous owner. He then brought it back.

Also saw this on Reddit today. Lucky bastard.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! We went to every GW yesterday around Pittsburgh (The two on Mcknight, Cheswick and a few others), except for the new one in Robinson. I wanted to run out to that one but my fiance wasn't feeling it and wanted to head home. If we did go, we would hav ebeen there at ~3:30, an hour before that guy bought it. fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!

On the plus side, I got almost every Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides figures for $2/ea at the one in Ross. The only one they didn't have there was Jack Sparrow.

What time do you usually go to thrift stores and find video games? during the morning at opening hours? I can only go to stores after office hours which is around 5-530pm... is going there at this time a lost cause already?

From my experience:

Going early in the morning is about the same as going at closing the day before. The best time is before people take their lunch break. This gives enough time for the employees to ring the people up who were waiting outside, pick up donations and put some of the new stuff out. The later process also dwindles on throughout the day but also at that 5:30 time you are joining everyone else who just got out of work too.

I asked because i havent been lucky at all in my occassional after work trips to the stores. thanks! i might try this out in one of my vacation days.

Your best bet to pick up something decent is to diversify your search. I posted earlier on tips and stuff and my reviews of certain types of thrift stores, most of my good finds are not game related. I don't know if you were having trouble because you were just looking for one thing, or you're just missing out because of your timing. There is a guy in my town that spends all day at the thrift stores here and just flips books and cds and that's how he makes a living. There are two people that work in my building who I see at thrift stores from time to time, they both hunt different things and I hear their stories about expensive furniture, or vinyls that they find. Both of which I would have not recognized. When I first started, I was looking for just games and would go home empty handed often. However now I almost always find something after hitting 3-4 stores and even finding things that flip for 50 is not too uncommon, probably once a month. I usually go about 3-4x a month. My best month was November 2009 where I made about 1000 off about 50 in purchases. That was more just getting lucky though, so don't expect it :). Also on your off days try to hit a few and don't spend too often in a store, it shouldn't take you long to scan everything.

I actually was pretty close to going back to that one yesterday, and would've been there around 4ish too.
I had to get a new hard drive for my PS3 and was waiting for my tax refund. It showed up yesterday so I was going to Best Buy to get one. Debated about going to Robinson or Beaver. Picked Beaver.

I actually disagree about not spending much time in a store. I usually do a twice-over of the sections I might find something in, since it's very easy to miss something, and I hang around for a few minutes until the next batch of stuff is brought out. My Goodwill wheels huge bins of stuff out at a time, and you can sometimes have first pickings of whatever they've brought out. Found a massively awesome GCN lot sifting through a fresh bin last year.

I usually give sections a thrice over since you never know when people may hide crap under something else. That's how I found the copy of Parasite Eve at the one Salvation Army on the NY/PA line. Someone had stashed it up under a couple of toys in the toy section(right next to the media section) and I just happened to move the right one and found it.;)

Some recent finds:

$2.99 at Savers

Normally would've left it behind but it was complete and obscure so what the hell?

IMG_0104.JPG

$4.99 each at 2 different Savers

This was the real gem of the last few weeks:

$4.99 at Salvation Army

I actually saw this and didn't buy it since I usually only flip things on Amazon and couldn't find this exact version. Went back like a week later and it was still there. It just sold on eBay for $61. Wa-hoo!

Non-gaming finds:

-Mobb Deep album from Savers - 99 cents
-Art Book(s) sealed at Good Will -1.99

and my favorite from today for 9.99 at Savers:

Picked up copies of Dragonball: Ultimate Battle 22 and Star Ocean: The Second Story (both PSX) for $1 each, and a PAL import copy of Worms for $3. Looked around for a PAL PSX, but the only one there was an old-style NTSC.

Found a bunch peripheral junk, that I'm sure we will start seeing more so in the next few years. Rock Band 1 and PS2 Guitars and 3 tony Hawk Ride boards. I just leave that stuff. I should donate my rock band stuff and then I can make for more games :p

My advice on being quick is definitely debatable and I enjoy reading everyone elses advice/strat, but usually what happens is a friend will come along, or I'll see someone I know and they just spend forever looking through every inch of a place and have a compulsion that they have to come out with something. IMO once you've been to a place a few times it shouldn't take you long to go through everything. There could be a suikoden 2 inside some random music cd jewel case, but im not going to check every single one. Now if there is a suikoden 2 case and no game, I would go looking :). It's a weighing of value/time, and for me I feel its better to go to several stores in x amount of time than only going to 1-2 but taking your time. But if you enjoy spending all day in thrift stores, then I'm all for supporting someone doing something they enjoy. The funny thing is, if I was rich and didn't have to work I would just hang out in thrift stores all day looking for treasures. I would probably become that game hoarder that was described in the Yard Sale thread.

During Christmas I was showing my brother some of the psone games that I picked up, I had 5 metal gear solids and I thought I only had two. At some point I reached the level of having too much stuff to keep track off, even though I flip a lot of it. So my perspective of a deal and what I'll pick up is different, last week I passed up a N64 complete for 14.95, and I would have jumped on it if I was looking for a N64 but its reached that flip only status as I already have at least 3 in my collection so now I'm more picky. I also realize that having at least 3 of older systems is a problem.. but I know im not the only one here like that.

Picked up a crappy condition but working GBA SP today for $3.99. No charger though, i charged it w/my ds charger and it works fine. I'll sell it to my local flea market guy for $15 considering he gave me $20 last week for one w/ a charger. Not a great flip, but i rarely find anything at this goodwill , so i said screw it.

My only great find there was a Mint NES top loader with everything (except box) and Tetris for $4.99

Nothing today at the Goodwill, besides the same crap that was there last year.

I would be remiss however if I didn't mention how annoying it is that all the Goodwill stores here lock up all video games and other electronic goods, in the jewelry counter. I understand that most Goodwill stores are not in good neighborhoods and the reality is that if they don't lock up the desirable stuff, it's all just going to walk out the door, but give me a break. I can see the need to lock up PS2 and newer stuff, but really locking up games from the PS1 era and earlier is just not needed.

And if they do insist on locking items up, is it too much to ask that they at least keep the counters neat and organized? Why do you have to just leave everything in the cabinet a disorganized mess where you have stuff piled on top of other stuff and you can't even see what's available? Why can't you stack the games label side up so you can actually see titles without having to wait 10 years for assistance, only to find that the games you saw were nothing but 10 years old racing and sports titles? Every time I go, the games are obscured beneath other crap, and always with the back side facing up, so you have no idea what game is what, and then you look like a jerk having to wait 20 minutes for the one cashier to finish with the checkout line, only to discover that the games you see are crap.

There must be a better solution. One Goodwill here tried keeping the discs behind the counter and the cases out on the shelf. The problem with this is A. That still didn't stop people from stealing the empty cases and B. You'd always run into the situation where Employee A put the case with the games in it somewhere the night before, and now Employee B can't find where all the games are, so you still end up having to wait 20 minutes until they either find where the games went, or tell you that they can't find them and you're out of luck. Is there not a happy medium?

That sounds like one of my Goodwill locations; only mine has the games completely barricaded off in a locked glass case, and then surrounding the case is a glass countertop moat with no entrance for employees--unless they're into jumping fences. I've sworn off that Goodwill until they change their layout, it's ridiculous.

There must be a better solution.
Yeah, it's revolutionary; they can go back to putting the games right in with the CDs like they used to. There's no reason to put sports drek and commons under lock and key.

People are much more inclined to jack PS2 games or newer since they can still be sold to Gamestop and Pawn Stores. Most of the theft is from drug addicts and kids looking for a quick buck, and older stuff is far less desirable because Gamestop doesn't take it, and even most Pawn Shops won't deal in old stuff anymore, at least not around here. At the Goodwills and thrifts around here that do leave games out in the open, I never see a problem with older stuff getting stolen, generally only collectors want it anyway. I just wish that since they do insist on locking stuff up, at least keep the cabinets organized.

One of the independent thrift stores down the line here leaves the cases out, but stores the discs/carts in binders behind the counter. Unfortunately in order to keep track of the location of the discs in said binder, they write the slot the discs is in in the binder in grease pencil on the case.:bomb:

Goodwill and one of the other smaller thrift stores up this way do the same too, but only going so far as writing the prices on the cases.

But I'm definitely there with you on the cluttered display cases. At least two of the Salvation Army stores have cases like that and one of them keeps all manner of CD's and DVD's in a giant mish mash with the games. It's really quite a pain in the ass to find anything in the case there. Most of the time I end up having to wait for the cashier to be done waiting on the people in line to get anything out of the case to look at, which means it typically takes 20+ minutes just to get them to let me see ONE item. Then I sometimes get a groan if I decide I don't want it.

What pisses me off is when they stick stacks in so you can't see the titles, when all they had to do was rotate them so you can. Happens all the time.

same thing happens at the goodwills i go to they stack shit so you cant see what the games are.

I found a couple things for my NES collection yesterday
NES power adapter $3
Ninja Kid NES CIB $4
Rampage NES $4

One shop i went o had a virtual boy with a couple games for $100, hopefully i can get that on a discount day

Heck I remember Toys R Us selling it with I believe six games for $30 just trying to get rid of them. I wouldn't be shocked if there's still a few sitting in their warehouse.

I bought my virtual boy for 20 at clearance, got bored and then traded it for a 13" tv so I watch tv and play games at the same time. I thought it was a pimp move... I wish I never made that trade :p.

I did pick up a virtual boy with six games off 35 ebay though last summer via early morning discount but its still pretty boring.. I wonder if I can trade it for a tv

Couple rare misses for my favorite GW. Passed on,

$30 for a dirty phat PS2 with cables, no controllers- Same place I bought a slim PS2 for $5 so idk where that price came from.

$20 for a 8MB PS2 memory- brand new but still $20 can get you 4GB cards (not PS2 obviously) these days.

Went to one of those trading barrack places that mostly sell electronics. Got a handful of PS2 games for about $5 each

Grandia 2
Jet Li's Rise to Honor
Okage Shadow King
Okami
Rogue Galaxy (sealed)
Mana Khemia -Alchemists of Al-Revis
Metal Gear Solid (Repackage Edition)
Inu Yasha Feudal Conflict
Dragon Quest 8
Zone of Enders
The Summoner
Eternal Ring

All in original covers, instruction manuals. Outside of some dust, they're all in great condition

Not much of anything at the Thrifts today. Picked up Apocalypse and Spider-Man GH for PS1 for $1.99 each at Savers and Iron Man on Blu-Ray at Salvation army for $2
