I agree with this and Panama Reds post. I've never enjoyed musicians getting off on making long overindulgent music that has no ability to grab the listener in the short term. Call me crazy, but after hearing something the first time, I like to be able to definitively say, I enjoyed that. I don't like listening to things over and over again to finally "get it", so to speak. That's just my opinion though.
Yeah. I getcha.
I'm a fan of dynamic music, and I hear a lot of people boasting that Tool is extremely dynamic, but I really have to disagree -- and not in an opinionated way, either. Musically / mathematically, the songs are overwrought and monotonous, which may be the intent... but that's very far from "dynamic", even within the own song, and - especially - within the walls of album. A juxtaposition between lyrics (sometimes vocals, too) and music might have been welcomed, here... but that would have been outside their style, I think. It feels as though the vocals / lyrics go too hand-in-hand for my tastes.
On the other side of the coin, I'm a fan of dynamic monotony and robotic rock, whilst dynamic in form. Listen to the record "Queens of the Stone Age", by Queens of the Stone Age, to see what I'm talking about.
Back to Tool: I'm not feeling the arrangements and instrument use. I'm not a fan of metal, per say (although two of my favorite artists are viewed as "metal", by idiots who view image over hearing sound), and I can't get on the high-hat symbols, hollowly-perky drums and monotone guitar work -- I can't feel the vocals or lyrics, either. I bring up metal because there are many metal elements within the realm of Tool's musical stylings, aforementioned.
Too pretentious, too. :x
For the spooky folk who are going to flame me for my opinion, I assure you that I'm stoked you love their record. Really. I'm only giving my review, as to why their music doesn't fall under my tastes -- not your tastes -- and nothing more.
