My first full home console was the 2600. but before that, I had a Boxing Game + Watch, a Pac-man mini-arcade thing, and I had played arcades and maybe some Apple II-e games.
But NES was the first really good console.
I always knew the 2600 kinda sucked. River Raid was pretty tight...still playable to this day actually. Pitfall 2 is my favorite 2600 game ever though. It was one of the few "realistic" adventure games that didn't have graphics abstracted beyond comprehension (try playing Temple of Doom...wtffffffff.) It also had a soundtrack that changed depending on what you did...like actual music with a melody, bassline, and drums, instead of random synthesizer farts. It also had a relatively large world to explore on your own. The game had a sense of scale, where 99% of the system's library had these strange ass games that seemed to have no logic. It also had pretty responsive controls and good platforming for the time.
but as good as it was, SMB just did everything it did a million times better, which is why game history pretty much starts with it and everything before is like "meh"
