We won't get a proper sequel until after RPG Thread VIII-2!

So wait... you're 2 hours into the game, and you're still at the fair?

Son, the problem is that you're taking way too damn long to get anywhere. As soon as you leave the fair, things are going to get way better.
I will eventually, I got burned out trying to get some doll at the carnival.

My says it's key to the end of the story, but it's so damn boring.
If you learned english I would have known that. JK.

But yeah tell that guy to shut up
He's the one that gave me the emu for it. ^^
What an odd gift...

edit: yowsa, bigger than I thought...
Anybody remember Enix's 7th Saga on SNES? That game was pretty hard because some of the other bosses leveled when you did, so you couldn't grind and beat them.

Never beat that game. Probably one of the toughest RPGs I've ever played.
i also remember that if you lost against certain bosses, they'd take all your runes, some of which had really good effects.

so if you lose, then it becomes 100000x harder
While the SNES version is good, the DS version is superior. A more accurate translation, anime cutscenes taken from the PSX release. 2 extra dungeons, Lost Sanctum which is boring & repetitive and Dimensional Vortex which is better and even has a surprise boss fight thrown in. There's a nifty extra ending exclusive to the DS which helps tie into Chrono Cross, from a huge CT fan this was an extremely nice touch. And like others mentioned the Monster Arena which I dabbled in for a bit but it wasn't very fun, it's at least in there. There's also a monster compendium, ending viewer and music box all taken from the PSX version.
So the DS versions is even better than the PSX? I saw there were some long load times in the PS version.

Seriously, I don't know why I'm asking. I don't even have a DS yet and my backlog is already piling up but you guys have gotten my interest with at the Chrono Trigger chatter.

I knew someone was going to say something about that. Was just to lazy to ass later. ;)
I've never played any of these Ar Tonelico. Would that hurt my enjoyment of the new one?
Nope they aren't related storywise much if at all.

It isn't quite an RPG.. but it's along the same gameplay vein as Diablo...

I would highly recommend trying Magicka, if you haven't done so. It's $10 on steam and there's a demo.

It's still a bit buggy, but it is absurdly fun.

The DS version is better than the PSX, not to say it's bad since it did introduce the cut scenes and library of extras. It's got like a 2 second load for battles. IIRC the sound completely drops out durring the loading.

Also I think the PSX version is cheap. I could be wrong.

The biggest problem I had with the PS1 version was that the loading between the game and the menus was seriously like 10 seconds. It was to the point where you'd occasionally think the game had crashed.

I'm really happy the DS version of Chrono Trigger exists. I liked the cinematics from the PS1 version, as well as the menu that keeps track of your endings, lets you listen to the music, etc. DS version gives you the SNES game's functionality with the cool bonus shit. I couldn't be happier.

Haha that's like dying on the first Koopa Trooper and saying Mario isn't worth the effort.

It's been awhile since I've been addicted to an JRPG, and by that I mean something I can't put down from start to finish. Lately I'll play for the first 20 hours no problem, then get burned out and play it off and on for a few months, finally committing and finishing it.

The last 2 I got into were Wild Arms 5 and Persona 4, both of which I played back in 09'. I haven't beaten anything as good since. I need a new game.

I still have Xenosaga and Wild Arms 4 sitting on the back burner, but I'd like to start something fresh. My problem is there's very little I haven't played and I can't stand handhelds.

You're missing out on a lot of good games if you're avoiding handhelds.

He's missing out on like... a couple. Let's not go overboard and pretend that anyone needs to play Legend of Guardian Kingdoms IV or whatever garbage is coming out on the PSP now.

I know there's more than that on my shelf alone =P
I know there's more than that on my shelf alone =P
That's just the highlights. There are many more.

I'm not avoiding handhelds, I've got several waiting to be played right now. It's a comfort issue more than anything since I rarely play games on the go anymore. I've hooked up my PSP to the TV to play a few games, but there's really not much for the system outside remakes and ports when it comes to JRPGs.

I'm thinking about buying Shadow Hearts: Covenant for the third time. I never really gave the game a chance, maybe playing for 2 or 3 hours. Last time I owned it someone gave me an awesome offer and I couldn't refuse since I wasn't even playing it.

BTW most the games you listed I've either rented, played, beaten or researched already. And if those are the highlights I don't wanna see the lowlights. I still have Star Ocean 1 & SMT Devil Survivor at the very end waiting to be beaten. They're just so boring I'm not going to force myself.

Knights in the Nightmare is on both systems, and the DS one is arguably better.

And Etrian Odyssey and Infinite Space are better than any other DS RPGs games out there *nodnod*.

Thanks for the input and feedback Rodimus. Now I know I'm spending that tax refund check on a DSi XL.

Too bad Infinite Space is rare and expensive. Less and less games are getting that way these days.

And most RPGs suck this gen, too. I don't think it's entirely unrelated.

This is why I'm going back to the ol' PS2 to find some good RPGs I missed.

Did you ever play through Persona 2: Eternal Punishment?
I'm not big on the pre-Nocturne Persona games. They just felt so slow.
I didn't like Persona (the only version I played was the PSP remake), but I enjoyed Persona 2: Eternal Punishment there were a lot of cool ideas in that game, although I never beat it and I think I lost my save file when my PS3 was stolen a couple years ago. Maybe I'll start it up again someday, but it is way on the back burner at this point.
Did you ever play through Persona 2: Eternal Punishment?
I did, one of my favorites. Gimme Persona (or a Persona remake) over FF any day.
I'm not big on the pre-Nocturne Persona games. They just felt so slow.
Persona 1 (PSX) was slow as hell, that's it's biggest fault, but at the time it was so different then what anyone else was doing I was willing to overlook the flaws and enjoy a truly unique JRPG experience. It did not age well and even the remake, which fixed a ton of problems, still feels like a chore to play. Persona 2 was a huge step up, battles were still a bit on the slow side but everything else in the game was soooo good.

FFIX is starting to bore me =[

I'm 10 hours in and I've really liked it up to this part
[getting Garnet's summoning skill in the forest]
-- but the combat is just way too slow and honestly, it's mindless.

I think it may just be this party make up though (Zidane, Vivi, Garnet). I have a feeling things will get better after this part.

I figured that out a while ago, lol.

I'm embarrassed to say, but the first time I played FFXII I didn't know you could config the battle speed, yet I still enjoyed the game. When I learned about it the 2nd time through I was blown away at how much smoother everything felt.

I got maybe 5 hours into the remake and was just not feeling it. It got so slow and boring that I gave up and sold it.

I'm a die hard fan of the series and honestly, I can't blame you. Like I said, it aged poorly. I always wanted to play the Snow Queen Quest. That and nostalgia were the biggest reasons why I trudged through it. It's amazing how battle music can keep me hooked on a game. It did it in Persona 1 and FFXIII.

 You can increase the battle speed?! Holy crap, gonna have to remember that when I do a second playthrough, lol.

Persona 2 EP was one of my favorite games on the PSX. Great chracters and fantastic difficult dungeons. I always love how the SMT games really emphasize strategy with boss fights. You just can't spam an attack. You really need to buff/debuff and use weakness. In almost every other RPG you can just use your strongest attack.

Persona 3, though was a total bore for me. I hated the school setting and just felt really limited in where I could go at times.

Finally beat Tales of Vesperia. Got like 550 Points and took 40 hours.

Probably the best RPG of this gen, but that isn't saying too much, since most RPGs are on handhelds now.

Will probably play Dragon Quest III on GBC until VI comes out.

People keep saying this, and I think it does a huge disservice to ToV. It's one of the best in the genre period. The presentation, voice acting, controls and game play are all great.

The only thing I dislike about the game is its interminable cut scenes.

I still haven't beaten it, I'm waiting for my HDTV to arrive next week.

There were two things I didn't like about it:

-Can't skip text during the party chat scenes
-The ending. God. Soooo bad.
