Where Is _____ Hip-Hop Thread

man... so what comes out tomorrow??

nothing?? eh....

last week I got Common and Keith Murray... prolly gonna throw them in my sell bin as well.

they're not bad albums, but they'd fit better in my collection as MP3s than among my stash of cds.

I'ma prolly throw that Project Polaroid record in the sell pile as well.

between that and Nogatco Rd, remind me to never pay for a Kool Keith album again...

I guess my tastes in rap music have moved passed him, altho I still enjoy me sum Dr Dooom

that cover is straight lol!!

I stick to Dr. Octagonecologyst for all my Kool Keith fix. That's about the only album of his I can stomach.

Didn't care for Nogatco Rd or The Return Of...

Nas is probably being taken off the bill for the Virginia Tech concert.

Concert Lineup Angers Some Va. Tech Families
Rapper's Violent Lyrics Draw Protests

By Sandhya Somashekhar
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, August 3, 2007; Page B01

A free concert organized to lift the spirits of the shaken Virginia Tech community is instead angering some parents of the victims, who say the decision to feature a New York rapper known for his violent lyrics shows a blatant lack of respect for the people killed in the April 16 shooting rampage.

Vincent J. Bove, who said he is a spokesman for seven of the victims' families, said yesterday that the parents are outraged that the Sept. 6 concert at the university would include the rapper Nas, who in one 1999 track chants, "Shoot 'em up, just shoot 'em up, what?" followed by whispers of "Kill, kill, kill, murder, murder, murder."

The lyrics "are indicative of the moral decay in our society that contributes to acts of violence," said Bove, a New Jersey security expert who has volunteered to speak for the families. "For a university official to condone it or to be clueless of what this person's track record is, it's unconscionable beyond belief."

University officials, however, said they have received an overwhelmingly positive response since they announced the concert Wednesday and have no plans to revise the lineup.

The program was assembled by members of the Dave Matthews Band, who are from Charlottesville and wanted to demonstrate their support for Virginia Tech by organizing the show, which would be free for students, faculty and recent graduates, said Chris Clough, a spokesman for the university. In addition to Nas, the band recruited pop singer John Mayer and country singer Phil Vassar to headline with them.

"Literally within minutes of the announcement, we received a tremendous positive response," Clough said. "Among those who have responded have been families who thought it was a tremendously positive note to start the academic year."

Publicists for Nas and the Dave Matthews Band did not return phone calls yesterday.

Nas, born Nasir Jones, is the son of jazz musician Olu Dara, whom Nas has featured on his records. Although entrenched in bloody New York hip-hop scene in the 1990s, Nas has also been praised for his unflinching, sometimes poetic descriptions of life in New York's grittiest corners.

In the title track of his latest release, 2006's "Hip Hop Is Dead," he raps, "What influenced my raps? Stickups and killings. Kidnappings, project buildings, drug dealings. Criticize that, why is that?" He continues, "Most intellectuals will only half listen. So you can't blame jazz musicians."

Alicia Farrell, whose brother, Jarrett Lane, was one of the students killed by gunman Seung Hui Cho, said she believes there is a time and place for such music -- but not at a concert meant to commemorate the victims and comfort the survivors of the worst shooting in U.S. history. Cho, a senior from Fairfax County, killed 32 students and faculty members and himself.

"My issue is not with Nas or his lyrics in any other place, but this is an opportunity for healing in the community," Farrell, 26, said from her home in Richmond. "It's the most inappropriate thing I could imagine hearing at such an event."

Bove said the decision reflects an insensitivity that has been endemic in the state's and the university's treatment of the victims' families.

Earlier this summer, several families criticized the panel investigating the shootings because Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) did not include any relatives of victims.

Some family members have asked the state for financial settlements similar to what victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks received to pay for funeral costs for the dead and health care for the wounded. Others blasted the university for using their dead children's photos without the families' permission to collect money for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.

The whole notion of a concert with such big names "smacks of commercialism," Bove said.

But Farrell, who grew up near Virginia Tech and harbors a deep fondness for the university, was more forgiving.

"I have loved that community for my whole life, so I want to be patient and understanding with them," she said.

Also yesterday, another attorney representing some of the Virginia Tech families said school officials have decided to keep open indefinitely the $7 million Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, which the university created to receive donations from the public in the days after the shootings.

University officials had planned to close the fund Wednesday, but in response to the families' concerns decided to extend it. As a result, Kenneth Feinberg, a Washington lawyer appointed to administer the fund, will negotiate with university officials on how to distribute the money.

Feinberg has drawn up a proposal to pay $150,000 to the families of those killed. Wounded students could receive $25,000 to $75,000. Several families have said the needs of the victims and families would exceed the $7 million in the fund.

Here's the official cover art for Kanye West's new album:

And, no, I'm not joking. (though when it's released it won't have the copyright info on the bottom, of course).

Can't see it in your post, Rozz, but I'm guessing it's probably the same one from wikipedia.

speaking of which, Guru's solo album (with new Producer Solar) sucked!!

well it wasnt terrible, but it's just very difficult to get into since when u hear Guru u wanna hear gangstarr!

altho... I heard Jazmatazz 4 (produced by the same dood) is suppose to be real good. Jazmatazz is proly some of the only good Guru u will hear outside of Primo.

Primo on the other hand seems to be extremely low key after the whole Christina Aguilera deal.

dood's making beats for Termanology, AZ, and Royce 5'9",

but recently he released another Big Shug record under the "gangstarr foundation" or something like that.

supposedly, Big Shug is supposed to be one of the worst rappers ever, lol. But I heard the beats are good.

anyways,

yeay, King Giddra is supposed to be the most popular hip-hop group out of Japan.

Like most good groups, they eventually break up as always tho,

and its two emcees, K Dub Shine and Zeebra, both have very good solo material out.

one person once compared them to the Nas and Jay-Z of japan, which if u think of it is kinda appropriate...

there really aint any1 else to compare them to anyways

ROCK THE BELLS TOMORROW!!!!!

This'll be my fourth RTB festival -- can't wait. :D

Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing for me from the SF Valley all the way across the 210-E. I remember for RTB1 traffic was so bad that day it took me two and a half hours to get to San Bernardino from Compton. :bomb:

I don't know what to think of those shades. I'm intrigued, yet at the same time confused by their purpose as glasses.

Maybe he wants to look like Sho Nuff from The Last Dragon!

Actually, I remember this style of glasses being a short-lived trend in the 80s when I was a kid. Their purpose? Vanity.

I'm anticipating the worst from the new Kanye, especially after his two singles. I was telling my gf that the only reason she and I are warming up to those songs is because it's Kanye and, honestly, we expected good stuff after his first two albums. I was saying that if it was 50 making those two songs, we'd be hating on them because it's 50, not Kanye.

I like to think of Kanye as a producer who opens his mouth once in a while... and not as an actual MC.

His rhymes are hella weak imo, but his beats carry him through.

BOO!

His definitely on that path, he's been looking to sell out at the first opportunity. Which is sad, because if he focused on less materialistic and superficial things he could be so much more. He's got mad talent.

I completely agree with you.

first off Mistah Fart_Bubble,

sorry I could not get the CD u wanted, I searched the area where all the non-food vendors were chillin at and couldnt find the Living Legends vendor. I think the cd is something like u may hafta buy it from the artist themself when u see him around chillin (unless I indeed overlook the LL booth).

with that said, Rock the Bells had hella mixed emotions for me. I got there at 2:30 so I missed both EPMD and Pharoahe :( Plus parking costed me $20, thank goodness I went to ATM the nite before or I'da been broke for the rest of the day! The road to find parking was a bitch in itself, it was way too crowded and hella trafficy, and I ddint even get to park in the lot I paid for. They ended up redirecting me way past the freeway bridge like a mile away from the place, and I had to walk there!

so I'm already not in a good mood, but as I get closer to the venue the sounds become louder and I am reminded why I came, good hip-hop shyt!!

the main stage had kweli rockin it, I decided to walk around and cover ground, checkin where the other stage as well as the vendors are (trying to get the Eligh cd to no avail). Mr Lif was on the other stage and I wasnt too far from it to get a great view! I watched him finish up his set, and Cage came on next. I did not see Cage, but he was able to jump on rite after Lif so I could hear him doing his thing as I walked away and took one last stroll thru the vendors.

I then bought a bottled water thinking I would need it standing in the crowd. It costed me $4 plus the bastard twisted the cap off for me and kept it!! got damn I kinda needed that asshole...

I walk to the main stage and have to chill in like the 3rd tier distance from the stage. The middle section had seats for VIP, the very front I did not kno how to get in there at all, was it open to non VIP ticket holders Rapodist?? regardless I'da rather been there than where I was becoz it's better to get elbowed and shoved than to be barely able to see, and I was rite in the front of my area too!!

Nas was suppose to be on but he hadnt showed up yet, so Murs filled in for him, he put on a great show as far as I can tell chillin way the hell away from the stage (tho it couldve been worse). The acts that followed him were Mos Def, Public Enemy, and the Roots. Nas finally arrived and did a few songs during Roots set over their live band!! That was prolly one of the best part!

then I got too hungry! I told myself I wouldnt mess with food there, but I was in dire need of sustainance. This was before the Cypress Hill set was to begin. The line for pizza was HELLA long! As were the lines to every other freakin food thing... I get in line for damn near 2 hours to finally get food. During that time, Cypress Hill has their whole set and the crowd is going crazy! Even in line with me doods are getting into it, and I cannot see them for shyt!! The Sun subsided while I was in line tho so finally the monitors came on.

I finally got my pizza after much endurance and am feeling rather pissed, but the pizza is damn good tho!! But only coz I'm hungry becoz halfway thru it it tasted like ass. By the time I get it Wu just started and it was dark so I could not get back to the view I had. Their set is dope of course, the reason why I came. I jus wish I was as close to them as I was last year. I could barely see but it looked like there was like 100 ppl on stage o_O

once theyre done, Rage was to come on. I decided to just leave rite there as I am not a fan of rage. Plus a big part of me is not even in a good mood so I dont even wanna watch one song for the sake of bragging rites. I left to avoid parking lot hell and to take a shower since I'm hella sticky from all the sweat.

oh yeah, and my cell phone wouldnt work while I was there! I had reception and was able to receive calls (since I missed a few) but I couldnt make a single outgoing call!! This caused a lot of frustration for me during the day as I thought it was a malfunction with the phone itself which doesnt make me feel good at all. Definitely the biggest contributor to any bad moods I had during the day.

Still... it was dope and I'd prolly go again next year.

here's a few pics of the crowd:

and graffiti thing they were working on:

Damn Jekki. You were far back. I was right up in front.

Did you hear the freestyle with supernatural when the audience gave him items to rap about? He got a rice hat and did some rap about raiden.
The middle section had seats for VIP, the very front I did not kno how to get in there at all, was it open to non VIP ticket holders Rapodist??
It was supposed to be open to general admission, but it was apparent to me that there was a lot of miscommunication among the event staff. I had many guards tell me the section was VIP-only, even when I showed them that the guide called it the "General Admission Pit." I eventually found someone who let my group in at noon. I guess I was lucky 'cause it seemed like the pit filled up and was closed off about an hour later.

They really needed a hose up front to cool the crowd like in past years. The sun and the body heat were really killing all of us up front. It didn't help matters that Supernat and Rahzel kept teasing us with bottles of water but didn't really help anybody out. I counted 19 people near me who dropped from heatstroke. I saw a couple people with bloody noses from the heat, too. And all day the guards by the railings were carrying out unconscious people. I gotta say it wasn't very good for crowd morale when everyone was dropping like that and it felt like the event staff wasn't really doing anything about it.

-----

I've got mixed feelings on this year's Rock the Bells... Random thoughts:

-Too many people! I think this was three times larger than previous RTB festivals. If you didn't get in early, it was nearly pointless to go because you wouldn't really be able to see anything from the grass area and the sound system back there is complete trash. I was in the back for the Wu set, and I couldn't hear a damn thing except booming bass. Yeah, I know all rap concerts turn up the bass but when the only thing I can hear is vibrations that's no good.

-Too many non-rap fans were there to see Rage Against the Machine. I swear I must've heard "Honestly, I'm only here to see Rage" a hundred times that day.

-EPMD came out real nice but that quickly devolved after a few songs when it became apparent that they had no real plan. They started making their DJ play clips from Big Pun, Biggie, and Pac songs among others, and when they ran out of late rappers to pay tribute to, Parrish literally said, "Uhh, we still got eight and a half minutes, Erick, what do we do now?" :whistle2:s You're EPMD! Do some more hits!

-Talib was great but what happened at the end? His DJ called him over and they spoke briefly, then Talib just abruptly thanked the crowd and took off. Afterward you could see him on the side of the stage arguing with his DJ and some RTB staff. He looked pissed! I don't know what happened because I really don't think he went past his set time...

-Mos was real late. So late that they had Murs come all the way from the Paid Dues stage to tide the crowd over with a few songs. When Mos finally did come out, I could at least say that his performance was much more focused than the last couple times I've seen from him. He's still tripping on that sing-song junk but not as badly as before, and not in a bathrobe. Plus it was good to see him and Talib do more than just one Black Star song, too. Felt like the good old Mos was back.

-Nas was the biggest disappointment of the day. I went there to see him do a full set, as advertised. Instead he no-shows his set time and only does two songs with the Roots. What the fuck. I am really pissed about this.

-Public Enemy was my personal highlight of the day. It was my first time seeing them, and it felt like I'd gone back in a time machine. Absolutely amazing to see Chuck and Flav out there doing their thing. Having Scott Ian from Anthrax come out for "Bring the Noise" was a real nice touch, too.

-Unless the huge spike in attendance came from Rage fans, I think that if Rock the Bells continues to be at the same venue I'll be skipping it from now on. It's just too big now and the grass field --which is where two-thirds of all attendees will end up-- is simply too far to make for a valid concertgoing experience. The Paid Dues festival is looking real good to me right now, especially since I didn't get to to the second stage at all yesterday.

one of the best parts of RTB tho was when Mos began singing Passin Me By...

then once he left his set, one of the hosts (I cant tell who from where I was lookin, lol) mentioned that they gotta get Pharcyde on the show!!!

if there's one thing that'll get me to go again and put up with the heat and the crowd, it's Pharcyde!!!

another positive highlight was RZA's opening statement, saying sum lol shyt like

"something something hip-hop something important something something TIGER STYLE!!!!!!!"

but the best part was this flyer I got:

splashpagefinal.jpg

OC, AG, Lord Finesse, and Diamond D all on the same stage together!!

how can I not be front row for that?!?!?!

One Be Lo and Slick Rick cant do anything but make this live show better as well!!

I am sooooo there.

EDIT: dont forget new Boot Camp Clik on tuesday!!

the leak is available on demonoid for all u fuckerz!

but as much as I'd wait til tuesday, the whole thing is streaming on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/bootcampclik

only one track in rite now, but shyt is good!!

It really wont take much to make a better album than the last one, let's see how it goes!

No doubt. My brother and I were just talking today about what it'd take for me to go back to RTB and put up with all of that again: my answers were Gang Starr and the Pharcyde.

I remember at Rock the Bells II, the host introduced Bootie and Imani to the stage and the crowd got real live 'cause we all thought the Pharcyde was the special guest that day. It turned out they were just backstage and someone thought it'd be cool to have them come out and say hi to the crowd. What a disappointment! And after seeing a reception like that, how has Guerilla Union not put them on the bill yet??

Thanks Jekki for the review and the pictures. It sounds like you had a semi good time besides the view and the walking. Nas with the Roots that is crazy. Too bad that they switched to multiple stages because last year I got to see everyone without missing anyone I wanted to see.
