Windows Phone 7 game discussion thread

Has anyone heard an exact date for WP7 to hit Verizon? I thought it was 1st half 2011, but who knows if that is still the plan with the iPhone coming to Verizon shortly.

Has anyone here tried deving anything for WP7? Im curious what programs are recommended.

Also, any news on when that update is supposed to hit? I thought Id heard in January, but theyre running out of days, so I was wondering if it got delayed.

I dev for it. I use Visual Studio 2010. That's all you need honestly...

The January update is actually coming out in February. Let's hope it's the beginning of the month and not the end!

Dang, Mtx, you develop for it? You should post in here more then. :p

I posted a few times in here, but never got much of a response from other dev's. Most of what I do is kept under wraps right now until the time is right.

Well, I'd definitely appreciate some help in keeping the thread alive, though I am no dev. :)

News! AlphaJax, the very polished Scrabble clone, may be getting an Xbox Live release in the future. WPCentral has a great comparison between AlphaJax ($1.99) and SpellIt (free w/ ads). Scrabble fans will want to read it. For my money, AlphaJax all the way (but it still needs local multiplayer!).

Also, one of this week's Xbox Live games will be the iPhone hit Parachute Panic. No price yet, but I'd bet $2.99.

How you deved for any other platforms? Ive been getting into Android, just because they have so many resources available online. Im curious how it compares in terms of community support.

Do you do it professionally or just free time type of stuff?

Just purchased Parachute Panic for my Samsung Focus, and it's pretty fun to play. Simple concept and well executed. Pick it up.

I also do iPhone. I do it both professionally and on my free time when I can.

I've done some research on Android devices and I just can't put much time in to it when Apple has a huge store right there waiting for me to publish to.

Good to know, I'll give it a shot.

I'm a bit sad that we only got one Xbox Live game this week, but at least it's cheap and plenty of fun. Parachute Panic has a great art style and very charming music.

A preview of Zombie Attack! Second Wave has shown up. It's a tower defense game that will probably be much better than Star Wars: Attack on Hoth, which I regret buying.

WP Central also reviewed SPB Brain Central 2, a $4.99 non-Xbox Live brain training game. It's got a bunch of Brain Age-type stuff, including Sudoku. Unfortunately it also has matchstick puzzles, which I absolutely hated in professor Layton on DS.

For you Parachute Panic fans, here's a cool Easter Egg... At the main menu, repeatedly tap the shark until something special happens.

Ignoring that one, a few of this game's Achievements are damn hard, dontcha think?

The second post of this thread is now the Windows Phone 7 Video Gallery! I hope it'll be useful to people who are looking for games to try.

Also, Doodle Jump is coming to WP7! No release date yet. If you're looking for a Doodle Jump fix right now, MonsterUp is apparently the best DJ clone.

Anyone know when Sprint will get a WP7? I am currently not sure if I want to jump from my Droid OS or not.

Sometime this year, but no dates yet. If you're interested in WP7, it could be a good idea to try to hold out since you'll be locked into your new phone for 2 years.

First, please subscribe to the thread and try to support it, guys.

Next, this week's Xbox Live game is Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night for $6.99. It looks pretty nice.

Good news! Sprint's first Windows Phone 7 phone arrives on March 20:

htc-arrive-open.jpg

So now more people can experience WP7.

Also, 2 new games this week: Deer Hunter 3D ($5) and Zombie Attack! 2 ($3). Zombie Attack is so-so. I'll be reviewing it for WPCentral.

Also there is now a free to play MMO for WP7. Hope you like my articles!

And ilomilo got a nice update adding new levels and stuff:

The game's a great buy at $5.

And remember, subscribe to this thread!

No, there hasn't been an instance of a WP7 game receiving more than 200 GamerScore yet. Perhaps we'll see some stuff like that after they decide to allow microtransactions and online play in Xbox Live games.

Oh wow, a Windows Phone 7 thread. Awesome. I love my HD7, not really because of the games, but certainly the games are a plus.

I grabbed myself Fruit Ninja, ilomilo, and Hexic Rush so far. Thinking about Flight Control and Tiki Towers.

Also, other random information because I didn't see it posted anywhere else:
- Halo Waypoint was recently updated to include it's full functionality (xbox live friend lists, statistics galore).
- Game Chest Logic Games allows you to play turn-by-turn Chess with others from phone-to-PC.
- ilomilo was updated to include a "second story" with more levels and such. No new achievements as the game itself specifically states that achievements can only be earned in the "first story".
- Announcement of new games coming during the "Must-Have Games" event in April: Sonic, Plants vs Zombies, Angry Birds, GeoDefense, Doodle Jump, and more.
- Verizon Windows Phone 7 device rumored to be coming in March.

Anybody else play some of the other non-LIVE games on the phone? There are some good ones like Chickens Can Dream, Ice Ball, Impossible Shoota, Krashlander, Quadra, Text Text Revolution, and Unite. Those are the ones I keep on my phone to waste time with.

Thanks for posting all the great info, Zack. I am super-excited about Plants vs Zombies and Sonic 4.

My favorite indie games on WP7 are AlphaJax, MonsterUp, and Haypi Kingdom. Corona's also pretty sweet, but I haven't put much time into it. I'll have to try your recommendations (not crazy about Impossible Shoota though).

Here's some articles about two more games that were updated last week:

The Harvest 1.2 update

iBlast Moki 1.1 update

I think MS is off to a good start with their 6 weeks of 'top' games. I think they should also throw in at least one WP7 game with each DotW.

I also want to see them push for more exclusives. The footage of the hydro thunder game looks great, but how about some Viva Pinata? Halo with Rage HD type controls? Something tied to Gears of War?

They promote the phone + apps a little on the dash, but I'm surprised they're not pushing even harder.

It will be interesting to see what the Nokia partnership does for sales.

I tried Haypi Kingdom, and aside from being a bit ugly and unpolished, I enjoyed it. I ended up promptly uninstalling it though, because I couldn't find a way to disable chat, and the small text popping up from other idiots chatting with swear words and racist comments were too much for me.

I did just get AlphaJax and I have to say, it's really nice.

More time wasted! -_-'

Oh, and I've been very tempted to get The Harvest, but I'd hate to play through it once and be done with it with no replayability, especially for 7 bucks.

Figured I'd share my WP7 story.

I had a WP7 in November (the surround) but a combination of missing my iPhone and the device having a battery that couldn't last through the day, caused me to exchange it for an iPhone 4, which AT&T let me do without penalty.

Ever since then, I've missed the best feature of the phone, the achievements on the go. I was hoping MS would announce a Zune with the WP7 os, but figured I'd make my own because I'm impatient. I found a Focus on Craigslist, and I traded the guy my old 360 (pre slim, just sitting under my bed) for his phone. I'm keeping it on airplane mode, and just using wifi, and it pretty much works flawlessly. Also, since it's not connected to a network, the battery lasts a pretty damn long time.

A few interesting things...

The game I had purchased previously, wouldn't show on my recently played list until I earned a NEW achievement. Basically, I could play Flight Control, but it would still say I haven't played since November on my Xbox card. Got a new achievement, and now whenever I play it gets bumped to the top of the list.

Almost every game can earn achievments even when you're not connected to wifi. The only ones EastX knew of were Need for Speed, Rocket Riot and the Womens Murder Club (or whatever it's called) game.

The only thing it doesn't do is show the recently played game if you play it off wifi and DON'T get an achievement. Not a huge deal though.

So there's my story. Basically as close to a Zune WP7 as I'll get until/if they announce one.

This, I got an achievement at the DMV on Friday, it was good times.

Good to hear Angry Birds is coming to WP7, seeing as I've not played it yet.

Angry Birds is a great mobile game with a ton of content.

I noticed the Katamari achievements popped up on the internet, hopefully that's coming soon.

Another thing to note in my situation, I'm in a pretty good position if they ever announce a Zune WP7 device, because the Focus holds some value being an unlocked phone. It shouldn't be hard to sell at all in the future, or I might even hold onto it incase I drop my iPhone or something.

This week's Xbox Live game is...

I Love Katamari

No price yet, but it's $4.99 on iOS, so let's hope for the same.

Also, Haypi Kingdom has been updated to version 2.11.

Hack, disabling chat in Haypi Kingdom is easy. Just don't click on Chat and the chat stream will never load up (this is done to save bandwidth). If you start viewing chat during a session and wish to stop, exit the game and restart it.

And welcome back to WP7, Sean!

What's the word on sd cards for the Focus? Around the internet, I've read some horror stories about them randomly deleting everything.

Anything with a flawless track record that works? I wouldn't mind throwing a 16gb in mine.

Tctc, it's hard to say. I think only one XBL game has dropped in price so far.

I use a Toshiba 8GB I picked up at Sam's Club when I got my phone .

No problems here, but you are going to have to reset your phone to use a memory card .

There was a sticker on the back of the phone stating this .
So I'll lose all the save data on my games, right? Or can I do a restore after the backup?
You'll lose it . I had to start The Harvest over when I exchanged my phone .

A lot of the games are score based so I don't know how much you stand to lose .

I plan on getting a 16 or 32 GB eventually so I'll have to wipe mine [again] .
Hopefully I'll be done with Castlevania by then .

My brother and I both use this card in the Focus:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220524

It's fast and works great. I believe you can back up your phone to the PC using the Zune software prior to resetting the phone.

There have been no advertised XBL sales so far. Rocket Riot had a temporary price drop to $5, but it went back to $7 eventually. Glow Artisan's drop to $3 is supposed to be permanent. I think it'll be a while before Microsoft implements regular sales (maybe by the end of the year).

I Love Katamari will be $7, BTW (argh).

I found this ...

Restore a backup to my phone

Each time you update your phone using the Zune software, a complete backup of your phone is automatically created on your primary computer (the one that you first connected your phone to, linking your phone to the Zune software on that computer).

If your phone has problems after an update, you can restore the phone to its pre-update version and state. This topic describes what happens if you choose to restore your phone.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/basics/restore-a-backup-to-my-phone.aspx

Anyone buying I Love Katamari?

Don't feel like spending $7 on a game? Good news!

Three Xbox Live games get price drops:

* Max and the Magic Marker dropped from $6.99 to $4.99.
* Rocket Riot is back to $4.99 again, down from $6.99.
* Frogger was $2.99, but now it’s just $1.99.

Hm, those prices aren't showing for me in the marketplace.

I love Katamari (literally) so I'll probably pick up I love Katamari for the train ride today.

Sadly, backups are only made right before you do an update to your phone (for example, the forthcoming NoDo update that should hit in a week or two). So for right now, we can't manually initiate a backup for our own purposes.

What's also currently unknown is that even if you had a backup, would you even be able to use it on a modified phone. If you put in a new microSD card, it forces you to reset your phone because it has to recreate the phone's file system so it can use it. This means that it will create a brand new, secure file system with your new microSD in there, different from your previous one, and because the file systems (being the one from your backup and your new one) are not the same, it may not allow you to restore your backup. In other words, the backup is unique to your phone itself, and if you change the hardware (such as the microSD card), it is no longer the same phone and thus your backup is rather useless. It's a security/privacy precaution. The nature of the phone's file system allows for this kind of protection, but since there is no procedure to backup/restore, no one has been able to test if these security measures are in place for such a unique situtation. Unique situation because technically, microSD cards were never intended to be removed and are essentially a hard-wired componenet part of your phone.

That being said, any progress you made with achievements are saved. I recently reset my phone so I could update it, and while playing Fruit Ninja for a little bit after the fact, I was able to unlock the "Kill 150 fruit" achievement even though I only killed a few fruit. So i guess that's a start.

I did try and play Katamari, and I have to say, I couldn't get the controls. I thought they were rather horrible. I wish there were a different way to control the game, then I'd probaly buy it. At least the music was nostalgically pleasing.

Ok this is getting annoying, just wondering if I'm the only one having this problem.

Games I'm playing will only randomly show up in my recently played list. If I get an achievement they always show, but otherwise it's so random. I played 15 minutes of flight control and nothing. A few seconds of OMG and it shows up. What gives?

And yes, I'm syncing with xbox extras.

EDIT it seems the problem is ONLY with Flight Control. Can anyone with the game see if they have the same issue? Just play it a little, go to xbox extras and see if it pops up. Really odd issue.
