Their questionable financial situation would make it an even better idea to make certain to maximize income on such a high-end product, which is more than likely to outsell any of their other recent HD remakes - possibly even combined. One of the reason Shenmue HD would sell well isn't due to nostalgia and people who already bought it, but because it's bought up every single time anybody utters "Sega" and "HD" within the same page, which informs new gamers not only of the existance of Shenmue, but also of how well-liked the game is, due to a high level of quality.
None of the releases on the Dreamcast Collection sold especially well, because they don't have a fanbase to promote the game for free.
It's not "teasing" the fans: it's getting a larger audience of potential costumers, and such, higher sales.
Even if I might come off as such, I have to add that I don't strongly believe in those particular rumors, but I can see why they would hold back Shenmue 'till late 2012, from a business standpoint.
There's no business sense in delaying potential earnings for up to two years when they need every successful game that they can get.
As I said, Shenmue HD is more likely to happen now than ever with Sega's new focus, but it'll have nothing to do with that silly rumor. They're already working on Sonic Adventure 2, Jet Set Radio, and Nights, so expect a lot more since they're cheaper to make than original games.
