ZUNE and your X360 - ZUNE HD Now in 64GB - Latest Update Now Supports AVI/XviD
Also anyone else having issues signing in on the Zune software since 4.0? I have only been signed in 3 times since 4.0 came out. Every other time I try to sign in I get an error, and when I do sign in, I eventually get kicked out and can't resign back in.
If you try to buy something when you're not signed in it will pop-up a dialogue box asking if you want to sign in as ... automatically .

Try 'buying' an App for the Zune HD to get it to do it .

I hope this works for you .
Does anyone know a way to convert digital copies of movies from ITunes/WM format to one that the Zune can read? It's the only thing stopping me from getting rid of my IPhone and getting a Droid when I upgrade my phone again (currently have first gen IPhone and Gears 2 Zune.)

Seems once again we left out from digital copies from movies on br/dvd's. There is a multi-step process to extract that data from the DVD, but your looking at like an hour or so to do it even on a fast computer.
so what are the biggest differences between the zune hd and an ipod touch?

i'm just looking to get one or the other, and would like some input if possible.
Zune HD:

Pros:
Slick interface, integration with artist info, etc.
Superior hardware.
LED screen, colors are very vibrant.
Better durability. (Look up Gorilla Glass, that's what the Zune HD has)
Smaller size.
Great audio quality.
Supports 720P output to anything with an HDMI port as long as you have the HD dock.
HD radio.
Better quality games however fewer titles than iPod.
Better software, however not by a whole lot.
Free Apps. (right now)

Cons:
No flash support, but neither does iPod.
Horrible internet browser, no tabbed browsing.
No bluetooth support.
Much smaller Appstore since it just came out.
It's not an iPod so it doesn't have a gazillion accessories.
No Mac support. So you have to dual boot.
Ads On Free Apps

Basically if you want a good personal media player buy a Zune HD. If you want a handheld laptop buy a iPod Touch. If you own a Mac I'd avoid a Zune HD unless you're already dual booting a Windows OS.

One of the bigger drawbacks for me from picking up one of the new HDs over just using my old 30gb brown/iPhone combo is the lack of a speaker in the unit. I never thought I'd use it much with my phone for listening to music, but I actually use it quite often now, especially for podcasts and the like.

I agree the screen is amazing compared to the old zune.

What I am starting to see about the whole flash issue is that I think Adobe wants more royalty fees on PMP's like the Itouch/Zune HD and both Microsoft and Apple don't want to do that.

Flash is being overly used on websites and it's like Adobe is slowly monopolizing the internet with it. Unless an agreement can be made with Adobe, it's going to be a very long time before we see any PMP's run Flash based websites. And if it's taking this long, we might have to wait even longer, unless Microsoft/Apple comes up with their own youtube type of site, but with the popularity of youtube, it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Although no bt support, I am happy there is support for FM radio/HD radio (which I still haven't gotten the HD to work yet). It can be a nice change of pace from listening to 5000+ songs.

The biggest gripe I have is that this is still not a Play for sure device...making digital copies of movies impossible for us without conversion.

Absolutely. I was highly disappointed about this.

I just don't get it why if most of these are WMV files , the zune still can't play it.

The biggest thing holding me back from buying an HD is simply how hard it is to get videos to play on it. It makes absolutely no sense to me why a Portable MEDIA Player has to be so picky about what codecs and files it will play. After paying $300, I really shouldn't be expected to monkey with a bunch of video converting software (which takes a long time to run once you figure out how to do it) for a device that's meant to be a state of the art media player.

I already feel guilty for talking my dad into buying an older Zune, he is constantly asking me how to get tv shows and movies on to it. I don't want to even try to teach him the complexities of video conversion.

I am thinking I may have to look into the irivers or something else that stays on top of the latest video codecs. Any suggestions?

Microsoft has a free video converting software that you can download off their website and it even has a Zune HD profile that sets everything up with the correct settings. But I do agree with it sucks that they don't support older codecs like divx/xvid or even avi's. Would be cool if they just ran with a portable version of VLC or some other player that plays anything regardless of codec.

Bought a platinum 32 HD the other week at best buy. $317.00 with tax. Returned it after 2 days and bought a black 120 zune off craigslist for $110.00. I love the 120 "wayyy" more. 16 and 32 is a joke these days, especially at the outlandish price. I feel the same way about the touch too. The 120 zune is way better. So it doesnt have the internet, who cares..it sucked on the zune hd anyhow. I had a itouch before a got on an apple ban, but thought the zhd was pathetic for its internet, apps, etc. The sound quality on the zhd is no better than the 120 zune. Yes the screen is better but its too small and narrow for my tastes and the unit as a whole is too small and fragile. I love the 120. Plently of space to allow for many more choices of media than any paltry 16 or 32 can offer. Once the hd gets 120gbs I will pick one up-by then they will have improved the internet and the other issues which normally plague a 1st gen.

The one thing that has me spoiled on the Zune is the "add to now playing" option. I usually shuffle all of my music and every once in a while when I want to hear a specific song, artist, or album, nothing is easier than using that feature. Once the song or album you added is done playing, it continues with the shuffled list of songs...it's awesome.

The price has to do with the cost of the memory type. A 64Gb flash drive is pretty expensive. For it's price point per megabyte it's on par with iPods if not a better deal. The older iPods and Zunes have bigger drives but they're far less durable and more susceptible to damage from vibration and simple drops. For a portable device flash is the preferred route because it will last you much longer. I've only several hard drive based media players and they all tend to die around the 3-4 year mark. I probably won't be for another couple of years until flash drive sizes start picking up, they're stuck at the 64Gb mark at the moment. iPod has a 64Gb Touch but it's almost $400.

But in your case a larger harddrive is definitely more of what you need since you have a pretty big collection of music. I tend to just put specific songs on my Zune rather than my whole collection.

Personally I wish manufacturers would shy away from touch screen stuff at least for PMP. Or at the very least continue using buttons for basic features like volume, changing tracks/albums. Because it's just another hassle for me if I want to change volume, or tracks while I'm running or working out. Instead of just pushing a button to do it, I know have to take it out of my pocket, look at the screen, swipe all over the place.

The Zune HD is small but it's far from fragile. The screen is made from Gorilla glass which is far more durable than the glass found on the old Zunes and all iPod models. They have videos on Youtube of guys trying to scratch the screen using screwdrivers, xacto knives, coins.

I agree with you the app selection from the Zune is rather poor. But they did come out with an update that released some pretty sweet games Audiosurf and Project Gotham Racing. Both are very high quality games that then really show off what the Zune HD can do with it's hardware. I'm kind of on the fence with Apps they're nice to have but I don't consider them to be the end all simply because I've seen what Apple has done with their app store and it's garbage. I don't need 4000 fart applications because seriously that's what the app store is. It's like 5% original applications, 80% copycats and then 5% of just garbage. The Zune just came out so obviously the App store isn't as developed. Apple had 4 years to create a Appstore and then destroy it through bad policies and management. Give it some time.

My only gripe is that there's ads with the applications which sucks but they are free. I just wish they gave you an option to get rid of the ads like if you're a member of Zunepass.
got tired of waiting for someone to make a decent speaker dock, so i made my own.

http://s153.photobucket.com/albums/s211/orntar/zune/

it has the official dock, and some altec lansing speakers, mounted to a board so its all one piece for my office. sounds really good too. good base for mot having a dedicated sub. i like how it turned out.
That's pretty cool. Yeah it sucks that there aren't too many accessories for it. The only decent dock I've seen is the old Kicker dock for the old harddrive based Zunes. The HD's will work with it after you get an update from Kicker but you have to mail it to them from what I hear, they pay for shipping and don't charge you if you bought it brand new. They also have a smaller model too but it's not as good as the larger older model and it also costs the exact same.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks! At least that covers the sales tax

My 30GB brick Zune, finally bricked

You will be missed...

I just got my Zune HD 32gb this week... I am loving this device! :D
I've used my iPod for a few years now, and this is my first Zune. I have to say...the screen, it's so vibrant and sharp, looks sexy as hell! Videos and pictures are great to look at, especially all the video podcasts available from the marketplace; there's so many to choose from. The radio (HD radio!), the mobile internet browser, The Social (Just learned about it this week!), and that one Audiosurf Tilt game is pretty addicting too!

Man, I love my Zune! ;)

$30 and $20 off the 16GB and 32GB Zune HD's on amazon.com.

Maaaaan why do i have to be broke the day after payday (rent)??? This is the kind of deal i've been waiting for. No tax...free shipping...what more do you want?

Oh, I think it's only for the black 16GB and platinum 32GB.

Two questions ..

1. Was the zune video converter thing removed or is that a seperate program? I have some videos I'd like to watch on my zune but I can't figure out how to get them on there.

2. For some reason about half of my music collection isn't being recognized although its sitting right there in my monitored music folder. How can I get it to be recognized again?

I read that the Zune software can supposedly take recorded TV programs from Windows Media Center, and convert them for playback on my Zune HD. Thing is, the software recognizes the video files, and in syncing, it just...hangs. :(

Does anyone here have the same problem?

Thinking of asking for a Zune HD for Christmas .

I have an OG 30 GB Zune now so it's not going to be a size upgrade .

What do you guys think ?

I'm doing the exact thing; Had a hard time deciding if I wanted a 120 or a 32hd but decided to go with a 32hd in the end. My 30 is basically full and that I figure that within the next year, I can find an 80 or 120 for a reasonable price. I figured that while they will keep updating the fw, for now on you might have to have the touch screen to get any of the features and apps.
2nded...minus Kanye West's cameo :whistle2:(
I can't believe they didn't include his version on the album. It's a weird combination but I hope they release both versions of Hurricane.

Does he use voice synthesizers on his version too? If not, point me to where I can listen to it please.

Has there been a date set on the facebook / twitter (could care less about that one) apps yet? They are suppose to be released this year or did they just announce it that it will eventually come out?

i'm kinda glad they didn't. The album was pretty epic, and adding Kayne West to Hurricane drags down its epicness IMO.

QFT.

Hurricane is awesome too, if only they removed those sections, it'd be perfect.

Reading back on your post, and Ruined's post, it makes no sense what I was saying.

I have the version featuring Kanye, I didn't know that there was a version without, I have the album, just haven't opened it.

Now that I've heard both, sadly I'm inclined to say I like the version with Kanye

Can anyone recommend a good video converter program?

EDIT: I just saw this in the OP, does this trick still work:

How to play Divx and Avi files on your Zune:

Found a way to put DIVX and AVI files on your Zune which you can then play on your X360:

1. Change the extension of the file from .divx or .avi to .wmv
2. Add the .wmv files to your Zune but don't start the sync process
3. change back the extension of the file on your PC back to .divx or .avi
4. Go back to the Zune and sync
5. You know have Divx on your Zune.
