Thanks to all of you guys/gals -- this clarifies quite a bit. I was really excited about 5.1 back in the late nineties/early 2000's and then.. all of a sudden.. I stopped caring about it. I think I got sick of all of the wires. A good sounding 2.1 system (with some nice bass) is fine for my ears.

My friend researched his plasma for days (he's that type of person) and, despite many good reviews and a name brand, his brand new TV has already experienced minor burn-in on Castle Crashers and a DVD menu. This was a high end 50" tv too. So... be careful if you get one.
