Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (PSP) Thread

Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness should have been done in the same style as Contra: Shattered Soldier. Basically what we're getting now with Chi no Rondo on the PSP, oh well maybe if the sales are good with Dracula X Chronicles the next Castlevania for consoles will be in 2d/3d.

I really liked Lament of Innocence... the layouts were repetitive, but the combat was great and it still had quite a bit of secret stuff to find. The gameplay felt really polished, the graphics were great, and the music was fuckin' incredible.
Just a cerious question. How many stages does the game have?
I haven't played in a while, but I think there are eight with alternate paths.

I was really really excited about Lament of Innocence, I enjoyed the game also. I wasn't a fan of the music, if I remember correctly it was techno sounding in some levels. I still haven't played Curse of Darkness.
I think he wants to move the series to 3D because the general public is infatuated with 3D videogames. After reading the interview, I believe he is very competitive and feels the Castlevania games are viewed as second rate. In his eyes, the series has not translated well to 3D. IMO, the series needs to make a well-made transition to 3D for it to stay a staple in Konami's lineup. It's important for the future of the franchise. Sales are the ultimate driving force, and 3D games sell better. If game sales are high, then he can acquire a bigger budget for the series. I think if he wants to move the series into 3D, then he needs to consider stealing and augmenting the gameplay found in the successful franchises.

I would love for him to experiment with a town-traveling somewhat non-linear Castlevania game. Something like the 3D Zelda games. I wonder if it would work.
You mean they're graphic whores?! Say it, it's ok. Why can't they just keep it in 2D and try to get Japan's attention more as well as selling here? I mean 2D is still alive, kicking and actually loved and APPRECIATED by most gamers there unlike here.

Am I the only one who wants a Castlevania that:
- Uses sprites as sharp as Guilty Gear.
- Makes use of the media capacity, NOT for FMV, but music and gameplay.
- Atleast as good as SoTN (difficult to top IMHO)
- Not be on a handheld.

Won't happen, but I can dream.

Oh man, when will tomorrow get here. :)
I think I might be feeling a bit *cough* ill.

Maybe because 2D games doesn't grab people's attention like they used to? Times change- look at all of the big name games on next-gen consoles these days. They're all making advances in graphics, as well as incorporating good gameplay. I haven't seen mass protests over the fact that the Mario games have moved on to 3D. The same goes for say, the Prince of Persia series. The first three games in the series boast combined sales of more than 3 million units. In two weeks, 1.8 million copies of Warrior Within were sold. That's just one example, but I'm sure there are tons more. Producers look at these figures, that are generated by people who vote with their wallets, and you're going to tell them that all of the evidence is wrong?

What's the big advantage of 2D anyway?

On Topic: I'm really psyched for this game. I just have to finish the 5 other games that I've already started first. *sigh*

It's not a big advantage as much as I enjoy 2D and so do others. Personally I don't appreciate the shift to make 2D games with little to no budget and eventually to put the hatchet to it except in Japan.
I don't understand why if Nihon Falcom can make money off of great looking 2D remakes of their Y's games and beyond that this is such a problem for others.

I think Konami considers Castlevania part of the elite echelon of gaming franchises, just below Zelda and Mario, but alongside Mega Man and others. I think they can pull off a 3D Castlevania (it's not as if all 3D games have been bad, after all), but they need to hire an entirely new team devoted to perfecting the franchise. For CV as a series, the 3D games are good, but forgettable. Being forgettable for a Castlevania game is unforgivable. After all, who can forget "What a horrible night to have a curse"?

Cheapassgamer wasn't around back then, but you should have heard me bitch and complain how Mario went 3D. I still think that Mario belongs in 2D.

As for Castlevania, the reviews seem to be conflicting. Some say that the emulation of the original game is spot on, while others say that the emulation is disappointing.

there are literally hundreds of series to complain about 2D-3D transition before getting to Mario. Has any platformer done the transition any better?

I'm not too worried about the emulation. It's probably just the diehard fans complaining, like will always happen with things like this. I've only played through SotN once completely and it wasn't even the PSOne version.
Any chance to get that pre-order bonus tomorrow if I didnt pre-order?
I'd like the know the same thing.

This game is fantastic. A bit challenging but nothing compared to Mega Man Powered Up thus far.

Further proves that the best games on a handheld are almost always 2D.

Getting pre-order bonuses without pre-ordering is pretty much YMMV. Most stores I find will hold them for those that have pre-ordered, then any extras are given on a first come basis. Of course there are times when GS or EB can screw you out of a bonus even with a pre-order so there really is no telling.
It's a little lame the D:CvX team didn't include the SNES game.

How about that other bonus? I never even heard of that before, and I have the DUO version. I never owned a DUO though, so I played my copy on an emulator.

From what I read (probably false information), it shouldn't count as a 4th game per say, more like an easter egg.
If you want to play it on an emulator, start the CD with a system 2.0 (or 1.0) card. It's short, looks odd (kind of a vectorman style), and has the music from stage 5'.

Just searh for Castlevania and pick the one with the bonus.

Just in case anyone is wondering :)

I actually prefer the original script. The problem wasn't the translation, it was the shit voice-overs.

It's kind of like the pointless re-translation of Final Fantasy Tactics PSP.

Best deal so far seems to be the Fry's $25 deal. I'll be PMing that shit.

Really, I should go to a Fry's for once... I've never been to the actual store, but I've been price matching their ads for the last two or three years.

How is it even possible for the online store to have used copies already? In-store is a stretch but on the website seems like a mistake at this point.
A miserable pile of secrets!!!!
"But enough talk...HAVE AT YOU!!!"

Can anyone help me find the required item to open up SoTN? I know it's in stage 3, and I know it looks like a vine next to a tombstone or something. But I haven't seen that yet and I've been through a few times...

EDIT:
I found it. You have to take an alternate route through Stage 2. I was on the wrong Stage 3.
Did anyones store not get the pre-order bonus? Shitty, now I gotta wait.
Mine didn't get any either. The guy didn't even know what I was talking about. But he said if they got any in he'd look up the list of pre order names and give me a call. I won't hold my breath.

I frequent the store a lot so I'm not terribly worried, they would call me if they got them; the question is will they get them? Seriously, you'd think they would be there the same day as the game.

Mine knew what was up as I had been swinging by every 3 days or so to ask about the preorder figure. They said it's coming on a later shipment. Yes, that could have been just to get me to not complain but my local GS is pretty cool and hasn't misled me yet.

omg! i didnt read anything in this thread yet, but i really really want it!
Fri = the new 'vania comes out,
Fri = the new slim white PSP is released,
Fri = payday.

if thats not a message from god, i dont know what is =]

bring on the dead monsters!!!!!!!!

man, i have done SOTN so many times... for some reason i own it twice on PSX, i found it for £12 in Gamestation, near me, and that was the special edition, with music.
just wanted to brag there...
defo gonna play it again, i am buying a PSP solely for this game. The Rondo bit is exciting to, but, SOTN, i love it.
anyway yeah PLAY IT AGAIN!

Yeah, I've played through to the inverted castle at least 2 - 3 times. I picked up SotN off of PSN last month and don't regret it. I've been playing the hell out of it and JUST NOW realized that I can equip a shield in my off hand to stop projectiles .... this is one of those games that has held it's worth over time.

Now if only Iga would release a good follow up to this and not some anime inspired shit-fest that the GBA/DS got (I was not impressed with Dawn of Sorrow or even Aria of Sorrow).

you know, i liked Portrait, the bit i liked most was the way the "van" "bounced" on its suspension when u land on it!
woo yeah.
oh yeah and you can get a gun, sweet...

i want more castlevania's!

Did anybody get pre-order bonuses for this? Why does gamestop expect us to have to drive back for something they promised in return for a $5 loan for the past few months? Awful. I asked for $5 off the game but no dice. I asked for a spare Ace Combat faceplate but they said the manager was taking it. Morons.
Now if only Iga would release a good follow up to this and not some anime inspired shit-fest that the GBA/DS got (I was not impressed with Dawn of Sorrow or even Aria of Sorrow).
That's a bummer. Those rank as some of my favorite games ever. That said, I'm anxious to get SotN unlocked in this game to play it with decent control. Playing it on the XBLA did not impress me.

I've heard that the ports of the original Rondo and SotN are pretty lacking in their emulation. Can anyone weigh in on them? I guess the colors are muted and the sound is off.

This remake, though, is fantastic. :)

I'll have impressions of SOTN this weekend most likely. I was noticing all the sounds that were off in the 360 version, so I'd say I'm pretty qualified to claim whether or not this is the definitive version.

It's been mentioned a couple of times in the thread(s). Some feel the emulation is 100%, but others feel it is off. It's hard to say which one is accurate, but typically purists won't be happy with any changes to their beloved games (even enhancements and speedups). I think you should play it for yourself and form your own opinion.

I'm really really enjoying the remake. I never played Rondo but I dabbled in the SNES crap port so I'm kinda familiar. I actually enjoy this more than 'fling your psp' Ultimate GnG (which I still haven't beaten yet. fuck that game.) What makes it so great is that IGA and the team realized that with 3D graphics you can put all the effing detail into the backgrounds that you want. It makes it feel like every place you go is new. I'm only on stage 3 now but I was really impressed with the homes in stage 1 and how you could see the stair cases and halls inside. Nice touch.
In Stage 1, what the hell does that sign mean: ALJIBA? If I find out later don't tell me but just give me a *nod* if it means something.

On the subject of Castle, I'm really curious as to what direction the team is going for Castlevania DS 3. Like they could wrap up Soma's story. They could do the War of 1999, which should be on a next gen console but hey... They could remake something too like Circle Of The Moon (sorry I just miss the DSS card system, giant bosses, and the heavy gothic overtones). I feel like this their chance to really get creative since they've done so much recycling already.

i've had quite a few fuck this game moments already and I just got past stage 3 lol

I really hate those flying things that wiggle up and down (medusa heads, bats....oh god especially those goddamn bats.....especially when i'm on stairs) lol

Yeah, maybe I just suck but I'm getting my butt kicked by this game already. I'm also at stage 3. I think it is pretty interesting...

Each stage seems to have two paths with two different bosses. So far I've cleared both bosses on stage 1, but while playing the second path on Stage 2 I got raped by the Warewolf boss. Good lord this game is hard >:|

Pretty awesome, I'll never get tired of 2d Castlevania games.

I already mentioned this before, but nothing is worse than the Capcom remakes for the PSP.

Those fucking games are unaccessible to anyone besides the major hardcore fans. I am sure the sheer difficulty of those games couldn't have helped drive sales. I don't even want to think about how many hours of my life I pissed into the toilet trying to get 100% completion on Mega Man Powered Up.

As long as, this Castlevania remake is only as hard as the original Rondo, then there shouldn't be many PSP throwing moments.

a quick question about the quick save.

When you continue from a quick save is that save deleted? So like I can't quick save right before a boss, quit,
continue, and if I am about to die, exit to title and continue again? lol
How about if I'm in the middle of a boss fight and I quick save if I'm about to die?

I suspect that it can't be that easy to get around, but dying at the end of a stage after spending a good number of minutes to get through it in the first place really sucks lol

The game is hard. It's a good kind of hard though. Like I said, it's not like Ultimate Ghost n' Goblins which is like... I don't have words for that game. Hardest Game In My Life. Castlevania is hard in the sense that you gotta play it carefully. I mean there isn't a clock keeping you down, just a very well placed enemy.

Am I at the end of stage 3 where I fight bronzed axe armor thingy? Ass hole keeps raping me. I'm thinking I'll turn my back to him and back flip over his ass. Love backflipping. Don't love doing it it at the wrong fucking time though.
im on stage 4 rite now and kinda stuck. anyone else having any problems with stage 4?
Stage 4 is pretty difficult no matter which path you take. I pretty much breezed through the game up until this level. Died twice on it last night before I even reached a boss so hopefully today will be kinder to me.

I think the whole challenge behind this game so far for me is learning how long it takes to start or finish an animation. Stage 4 just has so many new aspects added to it that it is taking me longer to recognize patterns and to time things up.

Once you guys get used to situations/enemy patterns you'll learn this game is pretty easy... :)

I know I played it enough that I can breeze through it for the most part.

Also the sign from stage 1 is a town says Aljiba, which is a town from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest...
