Sony can push back, as could MS. But its hard if they're saying "Let us do this or we won't put Madden/CoD on your platform" as those games sell far more consoles than even the first party exclusives do as they're so mainstream. If the PS4 ends up having the same set of wonderful features that the XBox One has, I'll gladly not buy either of them. PC + WiiU + Handhelds + Backlog will keep me happy. I do think that the third party publishers are pushing in certain directions, but it's not like Sony can't push back. And pushing back could be a smart move if they want to attract the purchase of everyone like me who is completely put off by the XBox One shenanigans.
We'll have to see. Again it's a lot of sway if they threatened to hold back Madden etc.I'm pretty sure that EA doesn't have that much influence over Sony's used market strategy. And EA is the only company who said they were doing away with online passes, to my knowledge. First party Sony games are still going to have them *cough*The Last of Us*cough* I'm sure. I think what EA is doing is a PR move. Capcom hasn't used online passes. Netherrealm had them for Injustice, right? So yeah. Online passes are not necessarily gone for good, just gone from EA games. After that SimCity DRM up, it's no wonder they're doing everything they can to try to regain favor.
The only way Sony could really up beyond what seems to be standard fare already (no carrying forward PSN games, no BC) would be to adopt the XBL model of pay to play online. That would be the biggest up they could make, if they don't really change the way selling/trading games works from PS3 -> PS4.
Well SMT:4 is coming out soon on 3DS, but it's already out in Japan, so not sure if there's anything to announce for that.Atlus are announcing some new stuff tonight at 1 AM. Super hype. Maybe some Persona related news? It seems to be related to the number '4'. Could be a sequel to P4A's story.

So how long can these long-ass quoter things can we go, exactly????If the PS4 ends up having the same set of wonderful features that the XBox One has, I'll gladly not buy either of them. I'd be shocked if it wasn't on both systems--again EA wouldn't have dropped online passes across the board if they didn't know they could control used games on both platforms.I'd only think that Sony would do the same if EA made them do it. After the backlash Microsoft is getting I don't think Sony would hop in that grave.
True, but sadly this was probably driven by the big third party publishers so Sony may not have much say in it as they have to have CoD, Madden etc. on their console or they might as well not even bother launching in the US.All Sony has to do to win most people (including myself) over for next gen is to do nothing. So hopefully they don't find some way to mess that up.I'd only think that Sony would do the same if EA made them do it. After the backlash Microsoft is getting I don't think Sony would hop in that grave.
There may be other things they can take advantage of. Maybe MS will restrict used game trade ins on the games they publish, and maybe Sony won't. Maybe Sony can require internet license checks less frequently etc.
But I'd be shocked if used games restrictions weren't more or less the same as on the Xbone.
Edit: This new quote system is weird.

Even ignoring the online pass thing, simple logic would suggest that if Sony wasn't doing this they'd already have came out and said so to throw further gas on MS while they're taking all this heat.Nope, no online pass for Injustice. And I still really don't think that the PS4 will have the same DRM as Xbone. If it does then I'm going with Josh's plan.

I seriously doubt that EA is just going to neglect whatever % of the market has decided to go with a PS4. There's a reason that companies like Square-Enix, Konami, Capcom, etc. have decided to make their games multiplatform now. If they can easily port the code and make it run well on another system, the production cost is low and the ROI is pretty high potentially. This is why we're seeing late ports of console games to PC as well as now release day and date on PC with the HD Twins. Only in RARE cases has a company compensated someone enough to gain exclusivity from a third party franchise (*cough*Monster Hunter*cough*). Microsoft does it with DLC packs, such as CoD and Skyrim, but beyond that most games are being ported to platforms to get cash in (even with the WiiU initially... Batman Arkham City, Deus Ex HR, Injustice, BLOPS2, etc.). There's a potential that some people only have a WiiU or for some unknown reason would prefer to own them on that system... cheap ports to new markets probably pay for themselves or turn a profit. We'll have to see. I doubt Sony will go pay to play. I figure they'll just beef up PS+ and offer better servers, faster downloads etc. to get more people to sign up.
Whatever the case, they've got to do something about the shit ass download speeds on PSN be it fix it for everyone or better speeds for + members or whatever. Too many times I've had an hour to play and want to start a new game and end up wasting 20-30 minutes waiting on game updates to download as they are for whatever reason huge files compared to 360 game updates and PSN is so much slower for downloading than Live.
Coming on the next all new season of 24: Jack Bauer is revealed to be another Son of Big Boss.Anybody ever play the 24 game released last gen? I got it on PS2, still sealed. Kiefer Sutherland is my new hero (and k Hayter) and I was wondering if it was as awesome as Jack Bauer diserves.
All true, but who knows? They may think they can make more money selling on one platform where they don't lose any sales to used games, lending, rentals etc.I seriously doubt that EA is just going to neglect whatever % of the market has decided to go with a PS4. The only thing EA did that seems to go against this was the creation of Origin -- but in that case, being the exclusive place to get PC games published by EA, they force people into using it and probably can turn a profit there too (without Steam, etc.).

Sony has already said (1) an internet connection is not required and (2) DRM on PSN has always been up to the publisher. This is why Capcom got away with putting that bullshit DRM in Final Fight/Magic Sword and Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. Sony hasn't let a lot of details out of the bag, but at this point, they don't need to. Let the media focus negatively on MS for what's going on and then when they com on the stage at e3, they can just put up a single powerpoint slide that says:All true, but who knows? In any case, I stand by my stance. I'll be ing flabbergasted if Sony doesn't have some similar type of "up to the publisher" DRM set up.
If they have no DRM and just aren't saying so then they are absolutely incompetent from a PR standpoint as they could come out with that right now and kill ANY chance MS has of having anything positive come out of E3. No one but Xbox diehard fanboys would give two shits about what MS was showing at E3 if Sony came out right now and said there's no DRM, online checks etc. on the PS4.
That they're so mum tells me pretty clearly that they have the same (or very similar) plans, and are just happily letting MS take the initial shit storm from it, and hoping people have calmed down by E3 when they just say "ditto."

No Internet Connection required
Buy/sell physical games as you wish (online passes may still be required)
10/28/2013
$299.99
Then drop the mic and walk offstage.
(Yes, Hank, I know. They should just "pull a Saturn" or whatever you were talking about the other night on Skype. )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbWgUO-RqcwMicrosoft has got to have a killer game lineup in store for next week. Why else would they play this "bad cop/bad news" role if they don't have good news coming? Either we're all going to be blown away, or it will be nothing but TV talk at E3.

Uh, that's EXACTLY how it is now. At least on PS3. And when PSN went down for 6 weeks because of the hack? People couldn't play some of their Capcom games. Sony has always left the DRM for third parties in the hands of the 3rd party.Sony has already said (1) an internet connection is not required and (2) DRM on PSN has always been up to the publisher. But I really don't see that happening. Best case scenario is no online registration at all for first party games, and third party stuff totally up to publishers. And I figure that's how MS will do it to--there release did say about the gifting that they'll allow it for the games they publish and all third party publishers can choose whether or not to use it. So I'd guess both will be more open with their exclusives since that's what helps move consoles.
I don't think we're disagreeing that much. If it's left up to the publisher, then some games won't work if they can't go online. And you can be sure that the publishers who block their games that way on Xbone will do the same on PS4 if they have the option. And you have to figure they will if Sony has always left it up to them. They need CoD, Madden etc. on their console, and it's the publishers who will take the heat if they're the ones deciding to require online checks etc.But I really don't see that happening. What's known is the following:
Sony says you don't need an internet connection to use the PS4. Ever.
Sony says Third Party used game DRM is up to the publisher.
Could statement 2 lead to something like XBone DRM? Possibly, but I think it's highly unlikely.
A killer game lineup of Kinect originals, by all accounts -- several sources, including the Dorito Pope have mused that the majority of the "original/new IPs" are all likely to be Kinect titles. That leaves 7 games from established franchises:Microsoft has got to have a killer game lineup in store for next week. Why else would they play this "bad cop/bad news" role if they don't have good news coming? Either we're all going to be blown away, or it will be nothing but TV talk at E3.
Frosty as much as I'd love to believe in Sony having a "Drop the Mic" showing, I have a funny feeling they're going to underwhelm as they've managed to do just about every damn time.
I hope I'm right too. I'd like to think Sony isn't as incompetent as I believe they are at times.I don't think we're disagreeing that much. Same with the used game stuff. If Sony is leaving that stuff above up to the publishers, no reason to not give the publishers control of the used game stuff too as they'll take the flack for it.
But time will tell of course. I just find it hard to believe that Sony hasn't pounced all over this already if they're not doing/allowing the same or very similar things to happen. They could steal all of MS's thunder and get all the positive publicity going into E3 and make most people not even care about paying attention to MS's conference..
But again, I truly hope you're right and I'm wrong on this. I don't have any more faith in Sony that I do in MS. Both are big, evil corporations. And frankly I wouldn't mind seeing them both this up and fall flat on their faces. The game industry could use another crash to shake things up--and if no improvement came it would be a good time for me to finally stop talking about jumping ship and do it and make all of you happy.
Yup. There's a new HD remake of the original Fable coming to 360 in the Fall with achievements. It will probably eventually be on Steam. After reading all this new console stuff being said, I'm with Frosty 100%.
The only game in that lineup I could be at all excited about would be Fable and after Fable 3 I don't even want to think about 4. Plus, I know it'll be on PC eventually. The only things that could make me want an Xbone at all would be Crackdown 3 or Dead Rising 3 (if it was exclusive). Given that DR3 would likely not be an exclusive, I'd probably not be getting one for a long, looooong time.
With that said, where I see the crux of the issue is here: Xbone is essentially moving to the PC-DRM model, with one significant difference from PC gaming --> while both require you to install and have a license, Xbone will never tell you what your license key is. And that's where the difference comes in. Because they want to prevent you from doing as you can with physical media PC games (if you are honest and sell your game and your license key and remove the installs from your computer, you can sell a PC game... backup copy will do you no good without pirating a crack or another serial/keygen) it's probably very likely Xbone games will never say "here's a serial key for your media, remove this from your account when you sell it or it won't work for someone".
