It's a software problem.
But yeah, the whole 2.4 thing is pretty ridiculous.
The 2.4 update has NOTHING to do with the actual update itself being broken causing the bricking. Those who can find a 2.4 update around the net will be okay. The actual problem was network related. Around a certain time on Wednesday when people downloaded the update, the download did not complete (so people were getting partial firmware). And because of people getting partial firmware, when it tried to install it, nothing was found, hence the bricking. This happened around a similar time frame in which the Official PS Site got hacked.
Those who have the firmware (like me, are okay). Like all firmware, there may be a tiny issue here and there(such as media servers may not be as stable initially, a certain game no longer working on a certain PS3 SKU (like one update made Wild Arms 4 no longer work on a 20GB/60GB SKU, but was fixed) and so on). Sony DID remove the firmware to make sure there weren't any other issues. Regardless, bricking still seems to be small because if you look at GAF, the number of people who experienced the bricking (and even here) is less than 1% (who updated). Those who downloaded the firmware on Tuesday night, for an example, had no issue.
But like I constantly tell people, don't expect trophy support more widespread until late Summer/Fall, since developers have ONLY had the tools to work with them for 1 month, and Sony is still assisting developers (some they already have) on how to use them (once that gets around, they'll look into making it standard). Custom soundtracks will always be left up to the developer (although with the recent update, it only takes a line of code or so to implement them compared to several lines of code), since Sony doesn't want to infringe on the software patent MS owns on them (An article here (It's not April Fools, despite the date) on it). Oh course software patents are stupid, but Barnes & Noble was once sued by Amazon.com for trying to use one-click ordering which Amazon.com has a software patent on.
