If you can't slam with the best (aka RPG Thread XVIII), then jam with the rest!

Has anyone played a recent rpg, and were very turned off by the music to the point where it almost ruins the game for you? This doesn't happen to me often nowadays, but some older rpg games had some pretty annoying music. I think the most recent rpg I played with poor music was Atelier Rorona.
I don't think I ever notice if video game music is terrible, at least, not enough to make me quit.

Yeah, Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2.
Dude, Panzerfist is back. Keep it down.

And that Chocobo jam was the shit!

It didn't make me quit or anything, but it got real annoying, real quick. The same can be said of The World Ends With You, as well.

I LIKE the song. Gosh.

Blasphemy!
I think we should expel him.

Before we know it, he's going to start saying bad things about Persona.

I have yet to play any Persona game, excluding, of course, Persona 4 Arena. That game had an awesome soundtrack.

Hahaha, XIII and XIII-2 weren't the strongest FF music offerings, but I enjoyed a majority of it (music-wise).  Crazy Chocobo is actually awesome for where/when it's used.  It's out of context/not playing the game that it's an aweful song.

TWEWY's OST isn't for everyone, but I found it to be a breath of fresh air and really enjoyed most of the songs.

Etrian Odyssey IV has an AMAZING OST btw.  Just saying.

Honestly can't think of any RPG that the music ruined it for me.

Yeah! Nothing like world saving superheroes who are built like 8 year old boys.

I'm not fooling anyone. I'll still play it, but ever since I turned 16, I just haven't been able to suspend belief enough to accept that 5'8", 110 pound dudes could cause physical destruction on a massive scale.

Wow. Two of these guys are even scrawnier than the usual fare. Not that I think a bulkier person could slice apart buildings (it is Fantasy, after all), but, eh. Beef 'em up a bit, Square.

They should have made it with unreal engine.

Testosterone to the max.

Those types of guys can cause massive physical destruction no problem.

This is what he was talking about.

Look how much destruction these guys cause just by shaking hands. Way more believable cuz they're so buff and experienced.

No homo at all.

Noctis looks badass imo, much more masculine than what he looked like in the original trailers. And those boots are sick.

We're talking guns vs swords here, I think you have to suspend pretty much all belief to play any game out of this series.

And sex appeal is very important to FF, so I don't think we'll ever see a more mature direction in terms of rational muscle mass, or appropriately armored characters.

To me, having a few waify pretty boys thwarting enemies usually requiring an entire army to defeat isn't much less believable than having a few bodybuilders thwarting the same bad guys. This being said, I'd like my JRPG heroes to not flaunt their comfort with their masculinity so much. Any Final Fantasy character with facial hair is manlier than the median FF hero by default.

Started fire emblem awakening on hard with the classic setting just to see how long I last until I restart from frustration. Having zero fire emblem experience I found out quickly that fighting in a group is a MUST. And whats up with no feet on all the charter models?

a design decision?

personally i hate it

it's hard to imagine having hot chicks on your team when they're all stubby looking

good luck on classic, i play on casual because i'm lazy. i say that, but i really only did it so i can save in the middle of battles. i don't like getting RNGed or having an ambush come out on turn 5 where they one shot my healer.

They don't have to look like the Rock, but at least have some semblance of musculature. You can have a smaller, lean dude, like a Bruce Lee looking character. Something like 5'7", 160 pounds. Or Christian Bale in the latest Batman movie, something like 6'2", 200 pounds. Both builds have a varying balance of power and agility, aren't freakishly muscular or unrealistic, and I'd imagine they're both considered attractive. Or even better; it's next gen, tie the character's appearance to their attributes.

Yup, and for both genders. If it wasn't, we'd be seeing more defined muscles on the girls, too.

Emphasis mine, because neither fit True Bishie Standards.

I do like variety amongst my characters, though, and it's not like there haven't been muscular FF characters before. For example, and I hate to bring FFX into the conversation again, but Tidus, Wakka, Auron, and Kimahri were all pretty muscular (though it must be noted that two of them kind of have to be in terms of Plot-- if neither Tidus nor Wakka were athletes, they'd probably be less muscular). Cloud, Zidane, and Vaan have some meat on their skinny bones, too.

However, I'm totally fine with Noctis having a Squall/Balthier body type

I appreciate not having the stock, square male torso in every game. Same for the barbie doll figures we usually get for women. See Mortal Kombat 9.

So my roommate is playing FF12 International. Somehow Vaan is even more annoying than I remember him being. Also, FF12 is even more boring to watch than it is to play (and I typically like watching people play games).

Maybe because the person playing is actually the one watching.

And the one watching is actually watching someone watching.

Man, I knew you didn't like it but it's as if the mere existence of FF12 offends you.

I think the only game I hate that much is Dear Esther.

I can't say I was a big fan of 12. I played it for a few hours when it originally launched, but it bored me so I stopped playing it. I still have my copy of it, but who knows if I will ever go back to play it.

No, not the existence. Just having to put up with it. How would you feel if you knew you were going to listen to and catch glimpeses of your roommate playing 60 hours of Dear Esther in your living room?

I think I'm nearing the end of Opoona, seeing as 1) how I can now buy the best equipment in the game and 2) I've just been to the next-to-the-last location in the Pocket Taxi menu. It's still weird in some ways (such as pacing, to some degree) and the translation's been consistently lousy, but many of the locations look great and the battle system is a diamond in the rough. Got mixed feelings about the game overall.

At the end of WKC 2. Just gotta get the knight for my avatar and finish up some sidequests before I tackle the final boss.

Ordered Etrian Odyssey IV, and playing a little EO 2 in the meantime.

I think I'll give growlanser maybe one more day and then just move on. Some of the mid-story battles are just getting too frustrating. I spent  about 90 minutes last night  doing an escort mission, that I finally only passed due to random enemy placement.

Then last night after playing  for an hour , I went back to rest and save. At the previous screen where there only 3-5 soldiers there were now nearly 12. there goes my hour of progress.

I have so many other things on the :psp: to play right now:

FF 7, Wild Arms, Hexy Force, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Unchanined Blades....

I would play a The Rock RPG so hard. Turn Based Ass Whooping.

With summer break here I finally found the time to finish Ni No Kuni and Xenoblade Chronicles. I know Xenoblade is supposed to be the best rpg of this gen or whatever but god damn I found it a drag to finish at the end. Ni No Kuni on the otherhand was very enjoyable all the way through.

I just can't be bothered to read quest text in MMOs anymore. FF14's is pretty well written, too, but it's not something I value in these kinds of games. If it's longer than a few sentences I'm skipping. That's something vanilla WoW did extremely well.

I'm really liking this beta, though.

I gave up on Growlanser. Too frustrating. The challenge was okay in the beginning, but I don't need to spent hours replaying a battle hoping the enemy targets someone else randomly this time, just so I can survive.

Started up Hexyz Force. It's a Sting/Atlus game so it can't be that bad. Pretty sure I got it from PSN for only $7.

Picked up Nier used from Gamestop today.

Everyone else is playing Final Fantasy games.

I'm playing obscure :psp: RPGs.

(Although I have FF 7 on there, and will probably start it next)

I've been playing Game of Thrones so...

I beat it today actually. It's alright. Combat is very simple but there isn't so much of it that it doesn't start to overstay its welcome until the last hour or so.

Story sticks close to the source material and throws just as much dark. The two main characters, as well as the antagonist, are all well done for what they are but there's a huge disconnect since it gives you dialogue choices that conflict with their primary goes at times. One character always turns out to be this huge asshole about halfway through despite making him say things that disvalue that both before and after.

Worth the $10 I paid, but I do love the fiction so.
