On topic, saw Battleship today. It's pretty much exactly what the trailer leads you to believe it is, so if you've seen the trailer and watch the movie anyways and hate it, you have no one to blame but yourself.

I enjoyed it though. It was fun to watch. Lots of explosions and action, which is all a movie like that really needs to be. I thought Rihanna would ruin her parts of the movie, but she was actually pretty decent.

Morons.[/QUOTE]so the Dictator is more of the same? SBC doing his character in real world situations because based on the 3-4 commercials I've seen I wouldn't have guessed that. I actually wanted to see it when I thought it was an actual scripted comedy rather than a character improving. I COMPLETELY understand why a parent would think this would ok for a preteen. Especially if said parent isn't a fan of SBC and perhaps didn't see Borat or Bruno.
Besides.. using that "Bully" logic. Kids hear this stuff all the time worse from bus drivers and their friends and the internet so yeah.. no need to hide it from them

I'm actually extremely disappointed now because it looked amusing but if it's him doing the Ali G thing only with a new character I'm just not interested. Trailers that show him shooting runners, and throwing trashcans into taxis make it seem fun.

I really enjoyed Grindhouse. I mean, I didn't think all that much about Planet Terror and Eli Roth gives me the creeps, but the rest of Grindhouse was really well done.

It is a scripted comedy. Some of the stuff from the trailers is not in the movie (e.g. the interview with Larry King). It's pretty funny. Not a great movie, but it made me laugh several times.

The best parts of Grindhouse were outside of the two movies for sure.

Planet Terror was alright, Death Proof was ehh. I liked Planet Terror more, but I remember more of Death Proof for some reason.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford-had seen it before. Still one of my favorite westerns.

Away We Go-- Sam Mendes' movie I hadn't heard of until seeing it in my netflix recommendations the other day. It was pretty funny in parts, but nothing great.


Grindhouse I really enjoyed pretty much all of. Haven't seen it since catching it in the theater when it was out. Bought the bluray cheap a while back but haven't got around to watching it.
 
I never got the non-love for Death Proof. If you are a fan of QT, it essentially has all the elements of his films with one of the best car stunt chases in recent memory. Is it Inglourious Basterds? No, but it's a pretty good QT movie.

It also gets better with each viewing, IMO.
 
Death Proof was incredibly boring. QT's movies are all about dialogue and tense situations, but most of the dialogue in Death Proof was girl talk, and super fucking lame girl talk at that and none of it was tense (besides the car chase of course). You don't know how badly I wanted them all to die. I haven't seen Death Proof since I saw Grindhouse in the theater but I should probably give it another try. After an hour and a half of crazy action and gore in Planet Terror, I was so charged up that Death Proof brought me way down to the point where I didn't even give a shit about the car chase in the end.

I will admit I thought Death Proof should have been the first movie. I watched then separately since and the longer cuts. I like the longer cuts better.
 
Planet Terror had it's moments but alot of the jokes fell flat. I don't know why more stuff just didn't end on the cutting room floor, if you packed all the cool stuff together it could have been a killer movie.

i liked death proof more than planet terror . planet terrors best moments were all shown in the tv trailers so when i finally saw the movie it was a big letdown especially with all the jumps in the movies timeline.

Saw Billy Madison over the weekend. I liked this movie as a child, and as I'm older, I'm starting to like it less and less.

Also saw the Descendants, a great movie.

makes me think what batamn should have really been like growing up.

I love Big Trouble in Little China. Not a good movie, but so fun to watch.

Tombstone is a great movie, as lokizz said. Not just Kurt Russell, but also Val Kilmer (who just does an amazing job).

val kilmer made that fucking movie for me his doc holiday was awesome. i liked johnny ringo as well the guy who played him has done alot of cool roles ( i think he was in the first terminator and aliens) .
 
The Big Lewbowski - 7/10 A bit too long for a stoner movie and wasn't really funny

Dazed And Confused - 8/10 Back in my teen years I would've appreciated it more. but still the best teen movie in the 90's

Yeah, but the thing about it for me was not so much the primary story, but the little things. After I watched it, I spent literally hours thinking about
the people in the movie with no thumbs, which the book didn't even explain. Wondering what the meaning was.

Because the movie implies the people with thumbs missing that they meet on the road are the "good people." Like a visual cue to the audience as to who the predators were and who the prey was. The theory is that they were escapees from those cannibal farms. That they were "hobbled" by having their thumbs cut off so they couldn't escape, taking away their ability to rise up and use weapons against their captors, to pick the locks on shackles, etc.

One crazy theory I heard was that the missing thumbs were the people who considered cannibalism and just ate their thumbs to try it out...but that makes no sense to me. I'd have just cut a slab off beef off my ass cheek and grilled it.

But yeah, the movie was sad as fuck. Not so much the main characters, because they laid it on thick. But just the way you felt a subconscious fear of ever having to live in the world if it got that bad. Made The Postman look like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

It's not a good movie. It's an awesome movie.

I just read a review of Wes Anderson's latest. Will avoid that fucker like the plague. Rushmore wasn't so bad, but the goddamned Tennebaums was too much. And then whatever else came next. Goddamit.

It's Bill Murray, that's what got me to watch them (for the Aquatic one, it had Goldblum, too). Everything but Rushmore kills Murray's vibe.

I don't understand Anderson's bidness at all. Twee doesn't begin to describe it. It's honestly the most annoying movie bullshit going. The visuals, the goddamn soundtrack, fuckin portugese Bowie. Michael Bay has nothing on that dude.

EDIT: While I'm hatin on mofos, why has anyone ever given a shit about Kevin Smith or his movies? They are not good. But I guess if you make enough bullshit comics allusions, they'll forgive you anything, Kevin.

Clerks was good and Chasing Amy wasn't bad. I also thought Dogma was interesting but you probably had to have some history with Catholicism to get the jokes...

You can have your opinion but if you think Wes Anderson sucks, Kevin Smith hasn't made one good movie and Drive isn't any good, I have no interest in seeing anything you actually are into.

The last especially. Personally I thought Dogma was entertaining I don't particularly remember a bunch of 'gotta be Catholic' jokes but as a Catholic perhaps I didn't notice.

kevin smiths earlier films were pretty good but after a while i dunno wtf he was thinking. i fell off the bandwagon after dogma and came back breifly for clerks 2 which was a steaming smoking rotting corpse of a film. now i prefer his live talks at colleges and what not but thats it. that comic book show could have been great but most of the guys who worked there came off like major assholes like those american picker guys only stuck in a comic shop.
 
Thor - Finally, got around to watching it last night and I liked the film.

Funny thing is every time the movie went back to Asgard, various metal band songs started playing in my head.

I loved seeing the settle nods at the other Avengers. "A scientist made great strides in Gamma Rays and disappeared". "Is that one of Stark's projects"?

Also, I'm pretty sure the SHIELD guy in the cherry picker with the bow when Thor was going after Mjolnir was Hawkeye.

The scene after the credits was a nice treat as well and looks to setup Loki's role in the Avengers.



Am I missing any other Avenger's references in the film?

Pretty much everything Kilmer did in that movie was classic!

You are correct sir, he played Kyle Reese from the future in Terminator and Cptn Dwayne Hicks in Aliens. Bill Paxton also in Tombstone, in Aliens played Pvt "Game over man" Hudson.

Drive - Excellent movie. I had no expectations going into the movie, but I was definitely surprised by how dark it was. Gosling straight up kicked ass in that movie. The only thing that got to me was
the fact that he should've died at the end. Not from a dramatic point of view, but from his injury. Not many people get stabbed there, bleed out and manage to drive away.
